View Full Version : Blazer anti-lock brakes for my vega

So..... for my 1973 LS Vega wagon project I'm using blazer front spindles with the dual piston calipers and the 8.5 blazer rear end with rear disc brakes.
Actually, we bought a beat up 2002 blazer (2 wheel drive manual trans) and stripped it.

So I have all the above mentioned components along with the master cylinder and the anti-lock unit.
With the exception of the power booster, we are just transporting the entire ABS brake system from the blazer to the vega, wheel speed sensors and everything.
I've got two areas of concern.
1.)We don't have room for the blazer power booster, so we want to go with manual. The stock master is 1 inch diameter. going to manual, I should downsize to 15/16 diameter?
2. I have no idea how the front to rear weight bias will be changing from the 2002 blazer to the 1973 vega, I do know the vega will be lighter. What kind of can of worms am I opening up here with the ABS?

Can anyone recommend a good source for me to research this?
Thanks!

I will assume that you are using an eight cylinder of some sort in your Vega.
Considering how far forward the engine sits (it's a front steer car and the drag link can hit the front of the rear sump oil pan) I would hazard a guess that the front/rear balance would be similar to an S10 truck. The Blazer would probably be balanced a little more evenly.
If you could get the front and rear axle weights of your Vega, a Blazer, and an S10 truck you may have a better starting point.

Honestly if the Blazer didnt have yaw control(ie a steering sensor the ABS is simply a straight forward wheel lock/unlock control device and depend completely on the wheel speed sensors. Being an H body reuse the S10 rearend and your solid. My 77 Monza has an 86 3.42 open rearend and I am trying to find/swap for a 4wd housing to get the axle/wheel offset better, ie less negative back space and more centered in wheel.
As for the Master cylinder, I am curious why you would go away from the Monza/Vega Master. I used a stock Monza master for my other 77 and will on this one it fits perfectly as Monza 76 up has same piston area as S10 singal piston calipers AND the dual piston spindle is direct replacement for all S10/Blazers, brakes and all.
IF Iremember correctly the 02 Blazer SHOULD be a three channel ABS with only wheels speed and possibly speedo input (might be able to fudge it with one wheel but would rather deal with electric speedo and stock GM sensor input).
Oh and according my two older brake parts catalog the Monza ran manual brakes and power brakes with same master cylinder.
Honestly I ran manual brakes with Raybestos Brute Stop pads on stock S10(86 2wd) spindles, 86 7.5, 3.42 open 2wd rearend, and used stock S10 manual wheels cylinders.
Being that drums require MORE fluid I would say that the stock H body master might serve and just add in an adjustable prop valve for rear disc.
I am looking at newer 4wd disc equipt rears if I can find one reasonable. This would keep me from having to run huge spacer/adapters for 17 in wheels.
Ah jusdt reread you have the 8.5 Blazer rearend, so just bolt it in ( I went cheaper back when I installed mine, I did a swing arm set up with cut down springs and swing arms. But my car had a Torque Arm and not a 4 link factory. Working on a bolt in rear cross mamber to remake 2nd gen H body not use Torque arm as it gets in way of exhaust.
