Im stillbuilding my 68 camaro but i have a chance to pick up a 10bolt with eaton posi & 410 gears but but i dont know if these gears would be okay in my car.

My car 68 camaro
Eng Trans: LS1/4L60E Trans is stock will need a 25-2800 stall
Eng Mods: 224R TSP CAM, BRP full length headers, Ls6 intake (243 heads future)

Can some one tell me if i should get this rear end or just build mine?

You need to look at what diameter tires you wil be running with that gear and the OD tranny ratio to see if the rpm wil suit your cruising range. Anotehr thing to look at that some of the other experts can speak too is driveshaft rpm. With an OD tranny you may have the engine rpm down good but spinning the driveshaft too fast for too long

maybe a little steep for a auto, but not crazy. if you were running a t56 it would be fine.

I will be running a 275/30/20 rear tire

4L60E Gears:
1st - 3.06
2nd - 1.63
3rd - 1.00
4th - 0.70

I have a stock rear end my car was a inline 250, 3 speed saginaw not sure wat my rear gears are. I have LS1 rear brakes & C5 Z06 calipers im going to add to the rear. I was looking on line and found a 67-68 10 bolt with 410 gears, eaton posi for 600 and i thought that for that price i should just buy it and put the brakes on it and swap rear. Is this a good idea after all i do want posi and i know i will need new gears so if this como works for my cruiser/mild autocross camaro it would save me some work.

I also dont have a drive shaft yet and i need to get one made but that is a whole other subject since i have never dealt with them

Personally I would not spend a penny on any 10 bolt. I would keep looking for a 12 bolt.

Nothing wrong with a 10 bolt as long as it is a 8.5. I've had one in my camaro for 13yrsnand abused the crap out of it with no problems and over 400 hp and 400ft/lbs of torque

Back to this, I have a chance to pick up a 8.5 since my stock one is a 8.2. But the 8.5 is 3.08 no posi how much would i spend in just labor to install the posi and maybe some 3.73? or should i go with smaller gears?

the 8.5 is a pretty good axle, a posi unit install is about 200 bucks plus the posi, (thats what I paid about 11 months ago) 8.5 uses less HP per revolution than a 12 bolt and also weighs less, that means more to the ground, get the 8.5 for cheap and your ahead of the game

A 4.10 gear is a little steep for a 4L60E .
The 1st gear multiplication would be 3.06 X 4.10 = 12.546 ..
You would run out of 1st gear quick ..1st would be almost useless ..
The steepest gear I would use behing a 4L60E would be a 3.73 , but a 3.42 works great ..

An 8.5 / 10 bolt will work fine , just put a good quality gear set in it , and a good quality posi unit , then break it in correctly .

What cars came with 8.5 rears that are direct swaps with camaros? Did 69 camaros come with 8.5? and if any one in socal has one they are looking to part with let me know

I have used the early 70's nova 8.5 10 bolt in 2 first gens. Its a direct bolt in. You will need to shorten the driveshaft about an inch & like have to use a different U joint, as the yoke is different. I used hotchkis springs in both, & had to enlarge the U-bolt holes on the spring perches. Both times I used 3.42's w/4L60E. Good overall around gear. 3.73's work well in a performance application. I never used a stall so that may help with the 3.42s. My 67 was bone stock except shorty headers & the cold air inlet. It ran consistent 13.0 and once a 12.96 at around 106. I felt like it laid over just a tad when it hit 3rd at WOT. The LS motors love some gear. My 68 firebird has underdrive pulley, long tubes, and LS6 cam. Its not quite done yet, but it runs nicely with the 3.42s.

i found a 74 nova that is being parted out with a 8.5 w/posi & 3.73 should work great and save me some $, I already have the C5 zo6 rear calipers and LS1 camaro rear backing plates & e-brake lines i plan on cleaning it up and putting a new cover and new oil and slap it right in, next project is geeting my drive shaft shorten or just buy a new one
