Question #1. Both valve covers on my LQ4 have vent tubes coming out of them. Whats a clean way to deal with them. FYI the car is carbed.

Question #2. The coolant temp sensor in the drivers side head is like an M10 or M12. Has anyone ever drilled it out larger to be able to install a probe from a mechanical temp gauge? ( Specifically a 2-5/8" Autometer Procomp ) I have the gauges installed in the car already and don't want to remove them. It was suggested to buy a adapter that fits in a radiator hose, by the probe wont reach.

Thanks for the help!

Autometer offers a sending unit for that specific thread.

Thanks, I've heard of it already, but I would have to buy another gauge....I was hoping to not have too..

Check out this Temp sensor adapter from Speedway Motors. It adapts the probe to the hole in the passenger cylinder head by the #8 cylinder. You could also use it in the drivers cylinder head by the #1 where the temp sensor is typically installed.

You can drill and tap the drivers side brass block plug for 1/2" NPT.
On the crank case vents, simple filters on the valve covers work.

Gary could you elaborate on the driver’s side brass block a little more? I am not sure where you are talking about?

There's a brass allen head block plug on the drivers side of the block that goes into the water jacket. The center can be drilled and tapped for 1/2" NPT and reinstalled. I did this for the stock 1/2" NPT sender on my 68 corvette.
You can see the brass plug on my 02 LQ9 below the #7 cylinder exhaust port on this pic. Although it may be forward of the engine mount on some aluminun blobk engines.

Gary, are there any pros/cons to using this spot?

Pros...it fits my 1/2" sender.
Cons...the big allen wrench to remove it is expensive.
Running my temp senders there on my 68 vette and 72 Olds, accurate confirmed by the ecu sender.
I think most, if not all, aluminum blocks have the plug in front of the motor mount, so fit could be tight. Iron blocks have it back by the oil filter, so easier access.

Thanks!

I went down to the dealer and got two of them, we will see which one is easiest to get to.
