What is a safe distance between the header and steering gear? What do you guys have on your cars? I have a 69 camaro with an LT4 and the stock steering gear.

It was determinded that any air gap was acceptable due to the thinkness of the box in that area.As long as it didn't touch...in contrast the primary tube on my 67 Chevelle hit my box and had no problems. I drove that one VERY hard...on a trip from Cresent city to Carlsbad...130 MPH for 2 hours straight....then 95 MPH average... stupid teenagers! :headbang:

My headers have abot a quarter inch. I have put 30 thousand miles on them and have had no trouble w/ my gearbox. Some headers come from the factory preformed with a slight dent in them to keep them from having contact. You should be fine though.

What do you guys think about 1/8" clearance between the header and steering gear? I have been told I need a 1/4" and others say any clearance is good.

1/8" should be fine, if you are in doubt hell tap in the header abit...I have even gotten away with shaving a bit off of the box itself.

I have about 3/4" clearance on my Monte. If worried, run a synthetic fluid and install a cooler-no worries there. -Jabin
