Just thought i would post the history of my build, it all started alittle over a year ago.. When i first jumped on to the pro-touring website i promised to start a build thread for the car.. Well here goes.. Rendering done by Kris Horton.. 64000
I picked up a 1971 Malibu out of a backyard in riverside, No drivetrain at all, but the car only had some surface rust and a small amount of body work done...

Dragged it out the backyard - I mean we dragged it out!!! I built a body dolly so we could get the frame out from underneath started the process of separating the body from the frame, which wasnt to hard since there were not any body bolts or bushings. Then I sent the frame off to powder coating, when the frame came back from R&R Powder coating in Riverside Ca, a buddy & myself assembled the roller in his driveway while it was still on the trailer to save space.. Took only a few hrs but the frame came out great!!! the powder coating was amazing..

While the frame was off getting powder coated, we used this time to get the body work in line & spray the car in black.
Paint & body turned out really well, but during the course of painting the car I didn't do a great job of prepping or sealing the paint.. Lesson learned, but I went ahead on & put the body together with the rolling chassis..
With the car setup as a roller, and realizing more than likely the car would go back into the body shop for another go around. Made some arrangements with Inland Auto body to do a final on the car after some fab work is done to the car. I made the decision to move the car. i have always loved the street fighter look & using the car to run some road races, standing mile runs, & open road races..

Outlaw Motorsport built a BBC motor they claimed was a 496bbc but turned out to be a 489ci boat anchor.. Mark Rapp from Rapp Racing in huntington beach helped me get the right 496bbc motor built for this project - I did some fabricating : roll cage & firewall mods. Hope you guys enjoy the build

After a few months of the car sitting, we really started to knock-out the cage work
The car is a long way from being finished, but i am trying very hard to get the car into the streets soon..

Hopefully you guys enjoy the images, sorry for any ****ty photos, just trying to document the build the best i can.

So gonna see how this works out, been through three good size sheets & some expertise from the sand car builder close by.. who by the way makes hand built bad-ass dashes for race cars or sand cars.. Sean from Wicked sand cars!!
It was really tough to make up my mind on the roll or lip for the dash, it kept coming out awkward, mainly because we had been attacking it in sections... We manage to get into the roller and do the top in one solid piece, i like the roll for now..
Just time to start getting it mocked into place to so it can be cut, bead rolled, powder coated & riveted into place. What do you guys think??
I got my power steering setup coming along too..

Sean Cooke
08-14-2012, 10:04 AM
Using Canton Aluminum Compact Power Steering Pumps and Canton Aluminum Power Steering Reservoir Tank these are typically used for racing applications which just puts a smile on my face - Steering box is a 12.7-1 from the 98 jeep Grand cherokee... I will start on my tie rod ends hopefully tonight, its just been blistering in So Cal..
thank for checking out the build.. I would love to have this car on the road by Sept..

We where able to knock out the dash fitment today, still needs some finishing touches, capping the end of the dash etc... have decided to powder coat the dash to match the roll cage & wheels... should look trick when its all finished.. I recommend dumping the stock dash on the A-body it frees up a world of space in the cockpit. Thinking about dynomating the underside of the sheetmetal to minimize rattling after the gauges - switches - stereo & supports are put in..

Ron, the dash does cover up the VIN # right now, I was trying to figure out whether to move it to the dash or cut the dash out around it... Don't want any trouble from Johnny law that could easily been avoided. Do you have any experience with this?

Sean you could roll the dice or cut the dash. IMHO, modify the dash and leave the VIN in the original location.

I wouldn't recommend that you remove/alter/relocate the original VIN tag from it's original factory location, in the vehicle it belongs to, or you may just be opening yourself up for legal trouble. If you can, cut a viewing window in the new dash sheetmetal, to expose the original VIN tag, that would be your safest option, to prevent/avoid future legal problems, just in case there might be any question.

So I spent a few hrs knocking out the front suspension & hung the brakes to get an idea what i was going to be looking at before the wheels arrive back from coating..
Let me know what you guys think..
Front Suspension includes a powdercoated stock A-body disk brake spindle with Afco low friction extra tall ball joints,
Speed Tech Performances ROAD ASSAULT kit - the kit included:
1. Speed Tech Performance Tubular Upper control arms with Stainless Steel Cross Shafts
2. Speed Tech Performance Tubular Lower Control Arms.
3. RideTech adjustable coil-over kit for big block motors.
4. 1 5/16" tubular, chrome moly, heat treated, powder coated, front sway bar
5. Speed tech tie rod sleeves.
Brakes are BAER racing Track4 (T4) Brake System
-The Track4 uses 13" 1pc rotors & 4piston Black powder coated calipers

I may have Very New 4l80e & modified Converter for sale if anyone is interested.
Thanks guys

You should think about cutting out and raising the transmission and driveshaft tunnel. With the car sitting so low you will need to raise the back of the transmission quite a bit to get your driveline operating angles low enough to avoid high speed vibration problems.

Andrew, that's something that has crossed my mind. I have the engine up about 1" now and still have room since I cut out the factory firewall. Once I get everything back onto the car gonna sit on the ground & set the ride hight & work from there... I believe I'm going to have move some things around to really center the weight

Been really burning the candle on both ends lately. Between helping all my friends keep their cars running/ working / and trying to get this street fighter running before RTTC & Del mar..

In the last few dayz, i Changed the front wheels from the original New Gen Slides 18's to 19x9.5's with a 275 tire, Jon made it work & the wheels look so sinister on the car. Then i grabbed the back wheels & snapped some photos before I pulled the motor back out to start on the torque converter, headers, rivet the firewall, paint the roll bars, mount the flex plate etc... etc... etc..

Once we got it all done it was back to messaging the BBC between the frame rails & the headers, once all back into place, which was a event in itself .. lol.. started back bolting everything else into place.. We got all the steering components bolted into place, followed by the speedtech sway bar..
Before it got too late, we mounted the steering column to get things lined up for final assembly.. I can wait to start cutting holes for all the autometer guages.

One of the days Currie Enterprises let me pick up my empty 12bolt & Some seriously cool trailing arms (uppers & lowers), to get the coil over mounts mocked up under the car, then i sent it back to them to gusset, weld up the big ford ends, isotropic treat the ring & pinion, powdercoat the housing, and re-assemble everything.. I snapped a couple pics should be back from Currie in a few weeks. I hope you guys are enjoying the build- I am having a blast with my first musclecar build!!! thanks for checking it out..

I can take some this weekend & post them for you.. I wanted to keep the interior of the car functional, some roll cages can be a real hassle to get in & around. Without boxing in the frame, I think the way I did this cage should allow for positive chassis feedback & keep the car very predictable..

Yeah the picts would be great thanks! I have been looking around on the forum but cant find many A bodies with full cages to the frame like I want to do. Did you go with solid body mounts?
The cage should stiffen the chassis up real well, and the added sense of security is nice for those high speed track days.

Was planning on going with the Fays unless there are better options? I work with Solidworks all day so if anybody has plans I could CAD them up and make drawings.

http://scandc.com/new/catalog/11?page=7

> Here is a pic of my cage to frame bracket that I welded onto the frame (25 years ago but never finished) was planning on a plate on the cage that would mate up and allow me to separate the body if needed. Used grade 8 hardware and 1/4" plates, might be strong but I dont think it would pass any tech inspection.
Planning on removing all the old brackets and then welding a new 3/16" plate to frame at all the cage points and welding to the frame like you did.

Anybody try out a Watts link on the A-body???

Great build Sean.

I had to install a Fays 2 watts in my car because the rear end was shifting side to side in the corners at the track and rubbing my quarter panels. With the triangulated 4 link you may want to go with a track bar.

Thank you, I appreciate the info. I have a rear bar just have not put it on yet, still working on the upper mount for my coil-overs, I moved everything from the back of the rear end to the front. Which may change the recommend spring rate but once I get everything all lined up and the bar on going to take some time to shake the car down - hopefully @ RTTC & Del mar

Sorry I have been MIA guys & gals... Picking up my car next week so I started setting ride height & putting the rear brakes on so the axles dont come slidding out..
Yes, I am running the Baers Track 4 calipers on all for corners, this was a big deal for me, i was not interested in the smaller rotor or calipers. Yes the rear brakes are overkill according to everyone in the industry... I feel though if you have 700+hp you should have ever possible amount of braking available. I have done some modifications so that they will be able to work. The setup is hard to make functional with a single master cylinder. with that said I am running a reverse swing wilwood pedal with dual master cylinders mounted under the dashboard. Soft lined down the firewall to hard lines on the frame & crossmember. Cool thing about running your master cylinders under the dash is i will be able to mount a wilwood proportioning valve inline for the rear brakes, allowing me to add or pull rear brakes on the fly.
Ride height is handled by a set of Ridetech coil-overs mounted in front of the rear end. I am using a adjustable lower mount allowing for 3" of ride height tuning without pulling the shock out of the stroke.
So I am taking my car home next week for the 1st time since i bought it almost two years ago. I am planning on wiring, plumbing the fuel, and the brakes at home. Then I am going to start back in on the paint. ... I am not going crazy on the interior of the car just something functional and clean. Expect more images to come. ..

Burning the midnight oil, got the rear brakes mount and all the hard lines run on the car.. .. While installing the baer brakes came across a few issues that i got worked out but not without some serious cussing & tool lofting.. lmao... So the rear disk is designed to ride on a small barring race to add some space between the rotor & backing plate.. Downside to this race or spacer is its hard to center the rotor on top of it with currie axles .. maybe the OD is too large but the rotor was only sitting on 1/4'' spacer and would rub the caliper & freeze up the rotor. After some thought, I swapped out the spacer for a 3/16'' wheel spacer between the axle & the Rotor allowing it to easily line up & created a perfect space between the rotor & calipers!!!
Hopefully this helps some else

It's a great question, I mounted the driver seat and sat in the car & it's actually not an issue. The passenger one is almost invisible in your peripheral view & driver side is visible while in the driver seat but easy to still see around & through

Made some headway on my 1971 Chevelle Street-fighter project.. i have gotten the car just about to the point where plumbing all of the fuel, brakes, and electronics into the car will a immanent reality.. i had to go back over a few things with safety in mind, but thanks to Blake @ Speedtech the upper coil-over mounts were simplified. He sent me some of the mounting plates they use on their control arms which i was able to burn into the rear upper coil buckets to dist the weight of the vehicle offer a much safer mounting setup...
As you can see, progress has been made on getting the front end back together, with the front & rear lights, bumpers etc etc... Trimmed all the fender wells for clearance.. Put the hood on, which "FYI is a nightmare!!" from the hood springs to alignment... there has got to be a better process .. Once the radiator was mocked into place for clearance. A top plate and lower supports was used to lock it into place, then the the CBR mini oil cooler was mounted to the radiator top support & the core support.. Hopeful can have the dash and Wilwood pedal assembly finished in the next few days..
thanks for checking out my build ..

Well, I have finished mounting the radiator/ oil cooler/hood/guages/floor pedal assembly .. Starting the process for wiring in a few days..

Has anyone ever seen or personally used a floor pedal assembly that consist of just the Brake & Accelerator pedals only???
which reminds me of another ?? i had growing.. My Longtube headers hang pretty low & have already gotten caught on my trailer going up & down.. Anyone have experience with tightening the space between the headers & the body??
Thanks for any input in advance..

Phil I will try to get some later tonight .. They are Procar sportsman seats by Scat.. I flattened out the mounts & bolt the seat tracks right to the floor ... every racing seat i tried to mount sat up very high in the car... I am not completely satisfied with my seat choice but they will work for now...

Just a few updated shots of the car ... I have been wiring alittle bit at a time for about two weeks.. The American Autowire kit is great, i got the highway 15 kit. The process can be confusing when you step outside & wire things in a different direction. If you have never wired anything before, i recommend at least trying it once..
Once i have the fuel system completed & driveshaft done videos will becoming ;) hope you guys enjoyed the ride as much as me.. Its been a long two years..

It was built to comply with most SCCA requirments SCCA - Section 9.4.1 (appendix G) -
DOM - 1500-2500 pounds - 1.5 x .095_ Over 2500 pounds - 1.5 x .120 or 1.625 x .120 or 1.75 x .095

As long as your setting position is low enough, they work great..

I love the pedal assemble its like driving a go cart & no one ever wants to drive the car because they are not comfortable using both feet. Lol
As far as the adjuster goes, I'm waiting to get some track time in before I start playing with the setup.. The T4 brakes work amazing no lockup and the car flat out stops -
The cage work is pretty cool really easy to get in & out - it gives you a nice spot to rest your arm while driving too.. People always ask if it impedes my view while driving & it doesn't - the Chevelle has suck a massive windshield and open view..
The back seat - this has been on my mind a lot lately - if you check out Blake fosters SpeedTech Nova, what those guys did in the rear is pretty cool they built the rear seat into the rear firewall instead of sitting a seat on top of it ... I'm adding some more cage to the rear section of the car which will make it almost impossible for a rear passenger, due to this, I may just clean it up & add some speakers

Any updates on this?

Sean Cooke
10-30-2013, 02:15 AM
It's been awhile since I posted any updates on the car - been battling some issues. Found some collapsed lifters in the motor & some valve train issues. Did a compression check on the motor found all the cylinders to have between 125-142psi of cylinder pressure which sparked a few questions on the overall setup of the motor. My paperwork for the motor build is a 496ci with roughly 10.5-1 compression. Motor runs fine but it's pretty slow for a bbc after talking to Ron & doing some basic research, found out that OutlawMotor sports didn't sell me a 496 at all but a .30 over 454 with 8.5-8.7-1 compression 489ci motor.

All my paperwork says 496 carb to pan and our agreement was for a 496 - I'm extremely disappointed with the performance of the setup & the amount of money / time wasted on this ordeal.
I can't imagine how OutlawMotorsports thought this would never be figured out or that it's acceptable to sell a low comp 489ci motor in place of a 496ci.

I agree 100% , like I told him, I don't like finding things out on my own. The situation could have been entirely avoided. So many things have gone wrong in dealing with OutlawMotorsports, the motor is now just icing on the cake - This has caused me to loose trust in his abilities. After doing business with him, I couldn't in good conscious recommend him for a build. Now I have to go thru the process of pulling the motor & either selling or rebuilding it up to my expectations. More down time / more money spent / I can't explain how ****ing much I hate doing the same task twice

You might have to do what my friend did and take Him to court(this wasn't dealing with outlaw Motorsports tho)... Long story short a shop (not Outlaw Motorsports) put a "low miles" Japanese motor in my friends Honda that turned out to be a high mileage motor from a car that was wrecked here in the states. He found out cuz his car wasn't even at the shop that was suppose to do the install but down the street at another shop getting the motor put in... Anyways you have the receipt and motor so hopefully he'll be a stand up guy. I stopped doing business with Ron for repairs when he quoted me $86 an hour labor rate. I still buy parts from him tho. He always seemed like an honest guy to me tho,I personally haven't had any problems but Wasting hard earned money/time sucks. Good luck and keep us posted.

I'm incredible upset by the situation & the amount of dis respect that comes along with this kind of thing. Obviously he is not in a position to refund my money & I'm in no position to believe he is capable of putting this right. I don't want him to work on my motor - This leaves me between a rock & hard place. I'm fully capable of replacing the necessary parts & have the machine work completed. He made the mistake in believing that he was needed for this & didn't treat me as a knowledgable customer. My time has been wasted - My money wasted - an now his reputation. No one wins in this

Hi my name is Sean Cooke, I have the black 1971 chevelle featured on this website i wanted to share something i am currently dealing with in regards to a engine i had built by OutlawMotorsports in Riverside Ca. When I walked into OutlawMotorsports & spoke with the owner Ron, I thought I had found HotRod heaven... After doing a significant amount of business with the owner Ron in building my personal 1971 Chevelle & engine. I have come to discovery that the engine purchased a 496 bbc from this shop is in fact not of correct displacement. The rotating assembly used is a scat kit the part Numbers on the pistons #139506 & the part number on the rods #scat6135 in fact coincides with the rotating assembly available from www.scatcrankshafts.com the part number for the complete kit is #9-454-4250-6135 specifically labeled 489bbc with a compression ration with 119cc heads of about 8.7-1 .... The problem is, I have a detailed receipt for 496bbc carb to pan, which was paid for in cash for the sum of 8k. This is not information shared prior to purchase or during the year long course it took for me to pay for the motor but a significant amount of time after the motor was installed into my vehicle waiting for the rest of the car to be completed. So needless to say I was very upset with the purchasing facility of OutlawMotorsports and Ron. The excuse 1st provided for this mix up was " You don't want a motor bored .60 because you will have cooling problems because 496bbc runs hotter" I expressed to Ron that this may be all the way true but should have been disclosed prior to the motor being paid for, installed in my car, and driven. So then the 2nd answer provided was "everyone knows a 489 & 496 are the same thing- I don't see what the big deal is about 6ci" even though all my paperwork that was documented says 496bbc & not 489bbc which is in fact what is sitting in my car. I explained to Ron my distrust in him, told him he did bad & shady business practice- Which he shrugged off & still believes isn't bad business practice. I filed a complaint with the Bureau of Automotive Repair that is now in there business file - the complaint was honored even after the representative went to speak with Ron at OutlawMotorsports ... in their words it looked to be a classic case of "Bait & Switch" and if an when I decide to appear in small claims court to have a copy of the report & findings subpoena to the court proceeding for the judge to review.
You might be asking yourself okay what ended up happening, I have had the motor removed & all the part #s documented, at my expense Of course. After being confronted by the BAR, Ron offered to re-machine the block and replace the pistons, which in most cases would be fine but since he has been extremely dis-honest in my eyes & getting caught up in this, I explained to him that the confidence I once had in his abilities to complete this task are now gone. He has though been sent a invoice from what I have found to be a reputable engine builder to replace the gaskets/machine work/ piston/ and Assembly of the the engine in the amount of $3056 which he promptly responded that he will not pay for the assembly of the motor, and produce the gaskets himself. to illustrate my stand point the motor had to been removed from the vehicle and dis assembled because I felt there was deceit in our transaction based on the performance of the car itself. I have never asked him to replace or warranty any parts, all I have asked him to do is make the situation right so I don't have to continually take further actions against him or his business.. In my belief, Ron knows that going to court against me with what i have in writing produced by him will end in a unfavorable judgment, simply because the numbers don't lie. He has asked me not to slander his business & talk bad about the shop. I have included all the part numbers from scats crankshafts catalog & the part numbers from the parts removed so any future customers can make a informed decision on doing business with them & spending their hard earned money with someone who could potentially mislead them. If anyone wants to contact me or see the entire documented build of the 71 chevelle its on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/sean.cooke.96/media_set?set=a.1420024396013.44832.1694775254&type=3

That sucks man, I will copy and re-post this as I am local to that area. It is unacceptable to do that in any format no matter business or otherwise. I hope that you come out on top, and that this can be resolved between the two of you. Shops like that need to learn their lesson, and unfortunately the only way to teach it at times is with their check book.

Glad to hear your motor is done,,,I just got my dyno numbers from Butler performance,,,655hp 670 torque

Is that to the tire? Either way that's some serious street eating power!

That is what the motor made on Butlers dyno,,,so Im sure its going to be tons of fun to drive and Im sure that even with the 335 30 18 bfg R1 tires its still going to just broil them but thats fine with me Im in it for the fun.

Thanks alot,,,I will probably have to paint it again after Ron Pircey did the damage to the door you can see in the pic and there are a few more scratches in the paint that are going to have to be fixed but it will be the same color.

I had to really zoom in on the pic to see the blemish on the door... the color really stands out... I was thinking about repainting my, the last two years have been rough on the paint.. but I'm gonna go out & beat on it 1st.. lol

Thanks, I did it for about a year... started putting together some really good times.. part of my 2015 budget is going into purchasing a car and racing a few events.. that video was when my lap times where in the low 20.4's I've dropped about a sec a lap since then.. best thing I ever did.. http://www.laracingx.com/ let me know if you ever want to go..

I've watched your build this past summer on Instagram and happened to stumble upon it here. Awesome build and beautiful car. Sorry you had that hiccup but I'm glad to see this moving in the right direction. I had similar issues with a builder up here in nor cal and a olds 455. long story short I'm out of 7k and the motor never got over 100 miles. Anyway Keep up the good work!

Very cool ,,,it looks like our cars are a lot alike ,,,STREET MONSTERS,,,There will be updates on my build at metalworks classics .com,,I'm just hoping this doesn't bankrupt me lol,,,because at this point I'm not only paying to build the car but also paying a lawyer to put a boot completely up the idiots you know what who decided he was more interested in taking my money than doing a good job,,,but it looks like my insurance might cover my engine being repaired and the paint ,,,and that will help to pay for the Butler motor so that's good news,,,, And that's a BIG HELL YEA,,, TO DOING THAT DRIVING THAT LOOKS LIKE A TON OF FUN,,,I don't think I will be able to afford doing it for a while because of my car build but I definatly have to do that I would just need to save up some maybe I could make a family visit there too,,my wife and kid are going to be taking a trip and I will be able to maybe swing something then.

No turn signals, I thought about doing a 3 way switch somewhere down the lines but wasn't a priority yet.. I drove it around for 6 months with no brake lights lol...

Hey Sean, where'd you get those exterior handles? I'm doing a similar build on my 69 and i want the outside all black too. Did you just have the factory handles powdercoated?

Yes they are the stock handles powdercoated gloss black.. but there is one another company that makes some trick ones that I think would look great done the same way by ring brothers.. I just dont know if they make them for our years yet

went to pomona swap meet a few weeks back, great time, good group of guys rolled into the show.
Found out a few things about the car, alternator doesn't charge until 2k rpm, so slow idling between cars killed the battery and the mechanical advance in my distributor had a bad spring in it. This caused the car to run erratically. Autometer really needs to find a better source for sending units my oil psi will terrify you. It always reads 10-15 psi off

112496 ordered a Jones racing pulley to up the ratio on the alternator. I was at a 1.5-1 alternator to crank pulley. Jones sent me a 5" crank shaft pulley & a 2" alternator pulley upping the ratio significantly now at 1100 rpm I'm getting 14 volts
112497
Got the Distributor out and locked out, using a digital 6plus box start retard feature but after some research I may be switching to a 6al-2 box. Features include advance or retarding timing with a laptop.

I got some updates, after trying to fix a aluminum power steering reservoir 5-6 times I have tossed it into the garbage can, replaced it with a Jazz unit. So far so gooD, I like the capacity of the unit and it's vented and hasn't leaked ...
A few months ago I took the car to TMIPRODUCTS.COM and they really liked the car, so they started making door panels for the chevelle, I don't have the finished product yet but will post pics when I do..

Over the last few months the car has given me some headaches and some serious smiles113833
1st. I had some very irratic timing issues, would set the initial timing and drive around and it would change randomly.then the timing would significantly before 3500rpm. After some research & changing out msd boxes several times. Came to the conclusion that the issue must be mechanical. Yanked the timing cover to find the Delrin Cam button destroyed, I don't recommend them. 113834 it let the cam & timing set move so much the timing chain grooved the mild on timing cover.. 113835 I yanked it all apart, replaced the button with a metal one from comp cams that has roller bearings in between the two parts. Had good luck with these over the years.113836113837113838113839

Got everything done & made some passes & even went for a pretty decent cruise. I'm running a 4l80e but on the freeway the car wouldn't shift to 4th without lifting the nuetral lockout on the shifter and going up another shift to what should have been nuetral. Realized the cable & linkage needed to be adjusted. I wasn't getting 1st gear or 4th gear. The car launched hard and spun the tired from a dead spot in the rpm band because it was in second gear the entire time!

Awesome build!!

Just wanted to say something about the bolt in cage idea and the frame plate ,seen something similar to this done , the guy went one step further though.

https://www.pro-touring.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=68920&d=1355964522

He welded a smaller o.d. diameter stub of sorts, to the frame plate ,that would slide up into the cage bar's inside diameter snugly , thus increasing the side shear strength.

Neat idea either way!!

if you can I would use something like this- bolt another plate to what you have with 3-4" of tube sticking up with this being your connection point.http://m.summitracing.com/parts/tgi-180112-kit
