I thought it was because the pushrod was too short, I bought an adjustable one and its doing the same thing. Its not a smooth pedal push, and when the pushrod comes out and the pedal is at its max travel its like it comes disengaged!! I'm stumped

You need a pedal stop to keep the pedal from coming so far back. There should be a stock one in the car.
Also, does your master cylinder have a deep hole or shallow hole? The shallow is for power brakes and the deep is for manual. It looks a like a shallow hole master is being used. The deep hole keeps the pushrod from falling out. I am guessing that is the biggest part of your problem.

thanks for the help. I figured out what it was, there is a cap under that boot that has some slots that gives the rod room to move, I had the cap the wrong way, so it was kinda binding up on it. I had to remove the boot to see this.
