Mustang owners out there. I need your opinions on your suspension set up. What do you like and don't like about what you have? What would you have done differently? I am researching what suspension set up to put on my 69 fastback. I want a good all around suspension that occasionally will be used for an autocross event. I am looking in about the $3k range. I already have a 98 explorer 3L73 rear that I am going to install for the rear. Thinking about building my own 3 link for that? Might keep it leaf springs with good bushings and sway bar. The front is what I am most concerned with. Any input appreciated.

There are so many good street suspensions (mildly raced) out there now, I think it would be easier to name the bad. So, is $3k front and rear or just front? What motor (Keeping the shock towers)? Street or Track is in the final testing of their 3-link and should release it in a month or two. You might want to look at their stuff. Don't underestimate the importance of good shocks!
To answer your orignial question, I have a mix of stuff up front that I've tweeked and tweeked again. It's right for me, but I like fiddlin.
TCI torque arm in the rear. I think it's fantastic, but it's not for everyone. I get a fair amount of gear noise and I didn't like the shocks that came with it. It also keeps the car low if that matters.
I wouldn't do anything different, but I probably will.

Thanks for the input campindog! I was beginning to think I was the only one with a mustang here. 'LOL' I really want to eliminate the shock towers but if the better suspension retains them I wont. Most likely candidate for a motor is an LS and 6 speed. $3K was for the front. Who is Street or Track?

My 69 is stripped down right now but I'm about to buy some brackets and other parts to make my own 3 link for the back. I want to have the rear end back under it before winter. The front has Global West negative camber setup from 20 years ago. Thinking of going with S&W heavy duty MII setup making whatever changes necessary to make it a good road suspension. Of all the MII setups I like the way they mount the control arms best. Have also been thinking of Griggs as a possibility also. Want to add I had considered an IRS out back from CWI or Heidts. DVS Restorations offers a kit for bolting in a later model cobra IRS, I didn't have a warm fuzzy about the power capacity & durability though.

I think the 3 link in the rear is the best way to go. I had two Cobras (03 and 04). Was not a fan of the IRS. It is VERY heavy and as you see Ford has got the new Mustangs handling as good if not better than the old terminators. My 69 is a rolling shell too right now. Waiting to get it media blasted. Appreciate your input!

I run a 66 mustang. I have Maier racing rear leaf springs and a watts link out back and it's hooking up pretty good. Detroit speed has an amazing new front end as a completew bolt in but Ithink its in the $6000 range. Ride Tech has a Tru Steer set up that looks real good also in I think the $2500 -3000 range. ride tech retains the towers, detroit speed eliminates them.I'm still running stock Aframes with Maier racing sway bar The upper A frame is is mounted 1 " lower than stock. Its not very fancy but I seem to be going pretty fast .

I would love the DSE front but cannot spend $7K on just a front suspension. I might just keep the rear spring set up. Its pretty amazing on how well you can get them to handle with the right setup. Thanks!

There are a couple of people who have Mustangs around. I am building a 70 Sportsroof with a small block. I am waiting on street and track to come out with their new 3-link rear befor I purchace anything. I am keeping the shock towers, and not running leafs (335s don't fit to good w/ leafs) Be careful with a Mustang II type suspension, I think it makes the engine sit quite high, and gives funky drive line angles. There are alot of this type suspension around, I haven't seen a LS set up used with one, it might fit alot better than I think.

There is nothing like a fastback with big tires tucked underneath!

69SSLS1, If you stay with leafs, check out the the ones from Maier that Lotarust is using. +1 They have a lot of forward bias to counter wheel hop. Excellent springs.
I think you need to figure out if the shock towers are going or staying before proceeding.

'LOL' I was just on Maiers website. Leafs would be the easiest way to go. Still not sure what to do. I do want to get rid of the shock towers. If I do I will weld in some frame braces to strengthen. I just like the idea better of the roomier engine compartment. Decisions, decisions.

I dont't have a Mustang but a 69 Cougar. They have almost the same suspension components.
I went with RideTech's Single Adjustable front and rear coil over kit.
I bought it form MCB Matt and they gave me a very very good price for the complete kit. Well, it was a little more then 3k but for that money I got a complete system.
I think their kit is one of the most popular and one of the best system on the market lately.
Check their website for videos. You can see their cars in action on the track.

Do you have any issues with it? How does the car handle? Thanks

Very true about those rear springs. Call Mike Maier and tell him what you want to do.He is a great guy that knows his stuff. Another good guy to check with is Jason Childress from Gateway Mustang. He is also a great guy with a lot of mustang knowledge. He also produces mustang suspension parts . Good luck!

I have a -66 mustang which is multi purpose fun car.
Ive tried at front:
Old setup Front: Shelby drop 1 7/8" with maximum wedges, 620 lbs springs 1" lowering,KYB shocks, boxed upper arm std brakes 15" wheels, 225-60-15 tires, 1" sta-bar, Original 4 piston brakes.Flaming river steering box, Stock Brake Master cylinder
Old setup Rear: 5-leaf springs 1" lowering block
The suspension was very low and acted quite well due to that, the tires were the weakest link.
Current setup Front: TCP front system, TCP rack&Pinion rollerized spring perch, 620 lbs springs, KYB shocks, Koenig 18x8,5 wheels, 235-40-18 A048 Yokohama, Wilwood 1" mastercylinder
Current setup Rear: 1 1/2 RR custom leafs, MM panhard bar, 1" lowering blocks, Wilwood 4piston 12,4" rear brakes, later revision included 25cm upper arm with uniballs.
This year I got the suspension a bit dialed in, but not completely, the rear was too soft, too much camber at front... still 3s behind 2005 Saleen on 1,6 km roadtrack
2013 Front: TCP front with coil-overs, either TCP or Koni with own brackets, principal same as TCP and SOT. 500lbs springs, 1" sta-bar, TCP rack,Koenig 18x8,5 wheels, 235-40-18 A048 Yokohama, RS4B7 14" 8pot brakes. Wilwood 1 1/8" brake mastercylinder
2013 Rear: 3-link on build: Koni 3012 coilovers with 275 springs, old upper link, Maximum s197 Extreme lowers, MM panhard. Wilwood 12,4" 4 pot brakes, MINITUB
As and advice, go all out in the first place, not to do it 2 or three times...
SOT front coilover system looks nice, I like that they used bilstein coilover. The price is competitive 2500ish. (If you buy only 3012 koni its about 1300$). Maybe the 3 link is as good. Fayes2 seems to also get good reviews. With out good brakes, you do not have confidence to enter corners the way you want... You have better space for rear tires then 64-66 cars but still it is
Here was just some thought. The main idea is not to make it twice or triple times. Do it ones. if the budget does not allow, do the front first and rear afterwards.

Iam running global west uppers and lowers up front with their strut rods and Ridetech single adjust coils in the front and rear also a ride tech 4 link in the rear also i just have to replace the 4link bracket in the rear because it an old design and is prone to bending due to the flat steel center section. beside that i love Ridetech products and global

there are a a lot of good options here. The main question you need to ask yourself "what do I really want to do with this car?"
I designed and fabricated my own suspension for my falcon and my dads 65 mustang. Both build threads are on here. Check out my signature.

You don't need to do too much for occasional autocrossing good tires, good brake pads, fresh balljoints and bushings, better spring rates front and rear everywhere, relocated upper control arms, better shocks, better control valve if you have power steering and get rid of bumpsteer and last a good performance alignment. If you are removing shock towers it is probably well over your budget by the time you are done.
i got the full ridetech system with 3 way coilovers and its really a nice system my car has no body roll whatsoever. i highly recommend it and there is no cutting up of your car which is what i really like
I am tossing around the idea of tearing my car apart to do something more radical over the winter is funds permit.
