Found a complete, running, 1998 454 vortec (L29?) out a chevy 3500 with computer and harness for $750. Thinking about replacing the pontiac 455 in my trans am with a fuel injected motor and was wondering about the power potential of these motors. Say if I put L92 heads, a moderate cam/lifter kit to broaden the powerband, and headers all through a th400... Figuring on using lsx conversion mounts and items... Will this work? what would it take...

To my knowledge, that particular 454 is a traditional BBC and LSX heads wouldn't bolt up. I don't think there is much aftermarket support for that motor, other than the BBC stuff.

The L29 is a Gen VI style traditional BBC, with a few notable exceptions:
It has:
Provisions for a hydraulic roller cam
NO provision for a mechanical fuel pump
Different timing cover than older Mark IV BBCs
Different timing cover than older Mark IV BBCs
L92, or any other non big block Chevy cylinder head will NOT bolt up. Any traditional style BBC head will (Mark IV, Gen V, Gen VI). The power potential is pretty awesome. Heads and cam should get you to 500-600 HP. The only downside, of course, is the weight.
Best,
Don

Ive been looking into this for my build. Here is some food for thought: http://www.superchevy.com/technical/engines_drivetrain/cams_heads_valvetrain/sucp_1006_454_big_block_budget_engine_build/viewall.html
565hp from a $1800 engine.

thanks for the responses everyone. that article was pretty gnarly. looks like the L29 heads flow 226/140 at 28in and .500. An unshrouding/valvejob would make a kick@ss street motor with a cam kit on the cheap. unfortunately it was sold last night :( just have to keep my eyes open i suppose. prolly get an LQ4 instead
