Hey everyone- I've finally got everything in order to make the move from Utah to Georgia so I can start work with Joe and the crew at Bulldawg Muscle Cars. We're looking at leaving Thursday or Friday of this week, July 26th or 27th.
As you guys know, just over 2 months ago my wagon's frame and body weren't even in the same shop. Now I'm getting ready to tow my Nova with it 2000 miles in 5 days. My wife will be driving behind, hauling our 4 kids, our dogs, and my other Nova with our 77 Suburban. I've been driving the wagon for about 3 weeks now and I think I've got all the bugs worked out. The Burby is reliable, but we've never driven it for more than 2 hours straight.
We plan on driving through southern Utah, then east on I-70 to Denver where we'll stop for the night. Day 2 will be I-70 to Kansas 135 South to stay overnight with family in Wichita. Day 3 is 35 North to see more family in Oak Grove, MO, just east of Kansas City. Day 4 is I-70 into Illinois and hit 24 South to Clarksville or Nashville TN, depending on how far we can get before we need a break. Day 5 is on 24 from there to Acworth which is NW of Atlanta.
Both of my vehicles run great... right now. Murphy's law has been on my heels the whole reconstruction of my wagon, so this is a shout out for some friends who may live along the path to be "on call" just in case we run into problems. I'll have all my tools with me so I should be covered there but if we run into serious issues I might need a helping hand. If you might be available please shoot me a pm or reply here with a location and phone number and I'll put you down on the map. Thanks to everyone for being the kind of folks I could ask for this, this really is a great community of friends.
I will post up the night before we leave when we'll be on the road.
PS, Free Street Rod Designs T-shirt up for grabs...
My wagon got 17 mpg at 65-70 mph recently when I went for a freeway cruise for about 2 hours. This is at 4500 feet with a new carb that is tuned for sea level so it's running way rich. I will have a bunch of stuff in the back of the wagon and will be towing a 73 Nova, prolly weighs about 3200 lbs. I'm hoping for around 14-15 mpg avg. If anyone wants to guess what my overall mpg will be for the whole trip, I'll send a free T-shirt to whoever's closest.
The wagon's motor is a 406 small block Chevy with ported GM heads, an XE268 Comp cam, air gap dual plane topped with a Summit 600 carb. Long tube headers, and a 2 1/2" into 3" single exhaust. Trans is a TH350, 1800 stall, and the rear is the factory 7.5" with 2.41 gears. Rolling stock is f/r 255 and 275-40-17s. I'm guessing my car weighs in about 3500 lbs by itself. According to Comp cams' software my flywheel torque peak of "420" ft lbs should come in right about 22-2300 rpms which is about 65 mph. Good luck!
