hello all, my question is: what is the most tire i can fit on a 17"x13" wheel? i have 335/35's on them now and the rim is still a little wider than the tire. any suggestions?
thanks, ed

What wheel are you running that's 17x13?

Technically, 335/35's are fine on 13" wide wheels.

Once you go under about 50 profile, you aren't supposed to be seeing much tire bulge out past the outermost plane of the wheel flange. Half an inch here is huge.

I'd just enjoy the sharper cornering response, keep that to myself, and let most everybody else do the wondering-why.

the wheels look like a big window halibrand, but are aluminum, not magnesium. they are a pin drive wheel held on by a knockoff. i've been slowly building my 57 gmc and have these 17x13's for the rear and 17x11's for the front.
anyway thanks for the advise fellas, ed

Your '57 GMC must be a cool build if you are running 17x11s up front!

When I was widening my 17x11 Cragars, I used a jig to simulate different rim widths using my 335/35/17 Kumhos. 12.5" turned out to be the sweet spot, but when I changed to Michelin PS2s I lost some overall tread width so 12" probably would have been closer to ideal even though the PS2s seem to be listed for a 11-13" wide rim.

What tires are you planning on running?

i think it's gonna be pretty cool. it's been a long time coming, but i'd like to at least be able to fire it up by the end of the year. it took me about 2 1/2 years just to get all the engine machining and parts together; it's a cummins 4b motor with 3 turbos and a bunch of other tricks.
i have kumhos that came with the wheels when i bought them, but they are close to being used up. i'm not quite sure what tires i'll buy yet, so i'm open to suggestions. final weight should be around 2800- 3000 pounds.
thanks, ed

Do you have any pictures? It sounds awesome. The truck must be lightweight, isn't the 4b something like 1,100 pounds?

I think the 335/35/17 Kumhos are temporarily out of production with no ETA last time I checked. I bought a pair last Winter after they were on backorder for over a year. Aside from r-compounds and drag radials the only other street tire option seems to be the Michelin PS2 and those suckers are nearly $400 each.

i only have some engine pictures right now. i'm building a cm chassis and cage to keep the weight down and have gutted the doors and cab, glass front end and bed, and the motor is just under 700.
thanks again, ed
