View Full Version : My toolbox fell into the side of my car

For Christmas my wife got me a 42" wide 8 drawer tool chest. We are renting a house & when the kitchen was remodeled they used the cabinets in the garage. I put my tool chest on it not thinking how heavy it will get. So one morning I went out to the garage (detached) & found the cabinet collapsed & the tool chest leaning on the side of the Monte. At first I thought someone tried to get in the window & caused it to fall over. But what had happened was we got a bunch of rain & the floor in the garage got wet, the sides of the cabinets (particle board) soaked up the water like a sponge & it just gave out. Im sure my tool box weight had something to do with it too. The car has 3 places where the the paint is scratched down to the metal. No dents, I'm just glad I, or more importantly, my kids weren't in between it & the car when it fell. So Saturday, in the Virginia 100 degree heat, I got rid of the kitchen cabinet & built a bench that will hold the toolbox. I didn't take a pic of the before mess, wasn't thinking. But here is the new bench. I think it is plenty strong now, I think I can put my 1500HD Silverado on it. It is 7' long 32" front to back, & 44" tall. I know, kindof high, but I needed it high to get my welder under it. And I am 6'3" so it isn't bad for me.

If you ever need to build shelving or a workbench or a plethora of other things, Check 2x4 basics. They make these molded plastic legs and joints to use simple 2x4s to build all sorts of stuff. They are prettu inexpensive too.
Here's a couple pics of the bench that I built using their stuff. These pics were where right after I applied the gel coat. Now its got a bank of 3 26" top boxes against the wall and a pegboard backsplash. Its an oversized bench, but it allows me to have a "clean" and a "dirty" side so I don't end up shooting metal shavings in the same place that I so finer detail work. I also added a benchtop grinder/polisher, a couple vices and a shelf above the light for my stereo.
Yeah I went a bit overboard.

Glad there were no dents.
That looks like the bench I built too... should do the trick.

Particle board, in my opinion, is the absolute worse building material on the market. The stuff is absolutely detestable. I cringe every time my wife drags something home made of the crap. It means I'll screw something up during assembly, will have to fix and repair at a later date, or (my favorite) wind up tossing the crap in the dump.

I agree I hate that *****. Really erks me off when the box for cheap furniture says "Solid wood". That's not solid wood, it is junk.

Your new cabinet looks nice. How sturdy is it? Any wobble?

No wobble at all, I think I could put my 1500HD on it & it would hold. LOL

Scott, you should contact your insurance co if there is damage. 4ft car show trophy fell onto my friend's 70 Road Runner and he got it fixed minus the deductible.
