I am currently swapping the heads and cam on my sbc. I am a bit concerned with the cam install and the making sure the motor is at TDC for the #1 PISTON. I dont want to mix it up with #6. I have the carb, intake and valve covers off. Is there an easy was to determine TDC with the valve train. Will I be able to leave it at TDC for the install. I was reading something about both valves closed at same time but do not fully understand. If anyone can explain this to me I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Put the balancer and timing pointer back on temporarily. Mover the timing mark in the balancer to the zero mark on the timing pointer. Look at both number one valves and they should both be closed. Then look at the timing chain and the cam gear dot should be in the 6 o'clock position and the crank in the 12 o'clock position. If they don't exactly line up move the crank until they line up. Take the balancer back off, take off the valve train and throw in the cam.

This is the way to do it when you have no tools to degree the cam ie piston stop.
