I've kept this on turbobuick.com for the most part but wanted to put the thread up here.
Basically I've been down the pro-touring road with a couple cars, mainly a 72 and 69 camaro. They turned out awesome but were not really what I wanted. I wanted a car that I could drive on the power tour, take to the track (road and strip), drive to work or just swing by the grocery store. Reliability, power, handling, braking, comfort in a classic platform.
The car I decided on was a 1987 Grand National. I've always loved the car and it was a great platform. Its a full frame so its easier to work on. The car itself is almost a pro-touring car out of the box. The engine is already a pro-touring worthy engine, a/c, power windows/locks, fuel injection etc.
So this is the car I bought, a 1987 Grand national with 60k original miles, no accident damage, 0 rust and basically stock.

I drove the car for a couple days, hot rodded the living hell out of it and blew a head gasket. I figured the easiest way to change the head gasket was to do a frame off... lol

So, time to get to work

Good news is none of the bolts were seized, no rust to speak of, no tweaking anywhere. Amazing how easy this was compared to my 69 camaro.

The plan is to strip the frame down, blast, brace, box and powder coat it.
I'm upgrading the suspension quite a bit. Spc uppers, lowers, veri-shocks, spc springs, lee 670 steering box, dse steering shaft, sphoon pro-touring rear swaybar, helwig front sway bar, fays watts link rear end, currie upper and lower rear control arms.
To handle the stopping I'm going to rip out the problematic powermaster and replace it with vacuum brakes. I'm upgrading to baer track 13" front and rear brakes.
To handle the power I've got a custom 4" aluminum driveshaft mated to a currie track ford 9" rear end with a diff cover to keep the illusion that its a GM product lol. The rear has an lpw cover/pinion brace, 3.50 gears, 33 spline axles and a nodular rear with a truetrack in it.
For the engine I wanted to keep the buick motor. I'm starting off with a stock clean shortblock, adding champion aluminum heads, a6262 billet ball bearing turbo, alcohol injection, ported intake, plenum and tb, rjc pulleys, ta headers, rjc downpipe, cotton exhaust, high volume oil pump, 210/210 roller cam with 1.55 roller rockers.
For the transmission I'm going to be swapping in the TCI 6x. Its a 4l80e based 6 speed transmission with paddle shifters.
All of this is on top of countless other parts and modifications.

Next item was the frame. All the factory seams were rewelded, some major areas were plated, the frame side motor mounts were welded to the frame and boxed, the frame rails were boxed and one body bushing mount was repaired.

I went with "Silvervein" for the powdercoat color. I was going back and forth between black or another color and decided on something besides black to highlight all the work that went into the car. Silvervein is more of an industrial powdercoat and I've actually seen it everywhere, never seen it on a frame before.

The back half was a pain in the ass. The fay's watts-link will not work with a ford rear end. No room for the brackets, so we had to fab some up. There is not alot of room back here especially with my insistence that there be dual exhaust that goes over the rear axle and out the back of the car.

The rear swaybar was an issue. There was no room left on the rear end housing after the watts link brackets, so we improvised. We cut the swaybar mount in half and welded it to the watts link brackets, pretty ingenious actually

Next thing on deck was the engine and transmission.
I am going to be driving this alot and abusing it so I really went overboard on cooling. I have a highly modified oil pump, massive oil filter, 4 core aluminum radiator, high flow water pump, and ceramic coated every piece of the exhaust with 2000* coatings.
The exhaust is a big improvement as well. I went with a set of TA stainless steel headers, RJC 3.5" downpipe and a cottons dual stainless exhaust.

For the engine I have a pte 6262 ball bearing turbo, these things are amazing. I also went with champion aluminum heads, massive improvement over stock. The camshaft is a 206/206 hyd roller from comp cams, major upgrade. I also had the stock tb ported and polished along with the upper plenum and lower intake manifold.

I wish I could show you what you have to go through for the head gaskets on these things. First ARP studs, second 3m construction adhesive, third custom multilayer head gaskets. Hit them with a heat gun to heat cycle and torque the heads half a dozen times.... its an insane process to make as much power as I want to out of the little 6.

Final engine picture before it goes in the car. I powdercoated the accessory brackets, used black anodized RJC aluminum racing pullies, installed the fuel rails and the fuel injectors. Lots of cool bits installed at this point, stainless fuel lines, billet adjustable fuel regulator, silicone instead of rubber hoses etc.

Stock the grand national has a 3.8l V6 engine. Good engine with unlimited potential if not a bit dated. I'm keeping the stock bottom end and replacing and upgrading everything else. These motors really shine when you free them up to breath and put a real turbo with some alky in them.
The car is done minus some tuning, I'm catching up the thread on this forum. I'm guessing the car has 500+whp, track time and dyno time will tell. That is at 23 pounds of boost with alcohol and 91 octane. Not bad for 3.8 liters though, beats my 2011 Grand Sport corvette by a long shot

Well, wait no longer! lol. This is the body finally going on the chassis. Besides having to chase some holes because of the line-x it dropped on no problem. We used urethane bushings with the full gnx kit. For those that don't know there were different body mounts depending on the car, gn, gnx, cutlass etc.. The full kit uses all the body mounts

Oh and if you were wondering about the project name... I always though this car would be what Darth Vader would drive, so the name Darkside lol

All I can say is WOW! I can't imagine how much work you have in that frame, just burning in a couple of braces and notching mine took forever.
Beautiful car and great build.

Thanks guys
So the next thing to do was to finish the engine install. When I put a 400 small block in my camaro it took 2 hours, this took two weeks ;p
Installed the core support, aluminum radiator with dual spal fans and the PTE stock location stretched intercooler

So in the spirit of what I wanted to do with this car, I was adamant that the exhaust went out the stock location. I have had turn downs on my 72 camaro and it was annoying. Well after installing a massive ford 9", a huge swaybar, wattslink and bars.... there was almost no room but we got it.
I sent it out to be ceramic coated so now 100% of the exhaust is coated.

Great, it was a bit firm but I just upgraded to ridetech coil overs and couldn't be happier. Its actually done and going through a round two of modifications and getting a bunch of body work and a few upgrades.
I haven't had time to update this thread but the buick one here is up to date..

Looks great! Can you tell us the wheel and tire specs? Not doing any frame notch/minitub?
