View Full Version : GM Type II Power Steering Pump Differeces?

I am having a custom bracket made and I would like to run an updated GM type II pump on my Pontiac 400. The brackets are being drilled the the same mounting as the DSE pump. My question is are all the GM type II pumps the same mounting, or are there differences. I know that there are the remote mounts vs. the attached resevoir.

Also, what would be a good car to get a pump from? I know that the LSx motors came with them, but which one would make a good donor for my car.

I am also contemplating running a hydroboost system in the future.

Thanks,
Ryan

I don't know the differences, if any, but I was told the Gen II's don't put out enough pressure for the hydroboost units. Marginal at best. Maybe Paul from Hydratech will see this and chime in. I went with an '86 Chevy one ton dually power steering pump on the van. As far as the 1st Gen pumps go I think most of them are the same mounting. Just comparing some of the stuff I have laying around they all look to be the same.

They put out more than enough with the right valve in them, there are millions of GMT 800 vehicles with hydroboost, and steering racks and steering boxes were both available on that chassis. Id have to find the magazine, but Circle Track had a feature on a cool new on car adjustable pump flow valve.

they are for the most part all the same. you want the 2 gpm flow valve. A 9/32 bit should not fit through the orifice. That is for H-Boost. SPeedway sells a butt load of valves.

If you run a resivior on the back you will be OK w/ stock unit. If you want to use AN fittings, get a pump that has them from KRC, Sweet manuf, ect. You can tap the housings but the port walls are very thin and unless you have a mill , you will break through or worse crack the wall.

It is recommend that you run a cooler if you install the H-Boost. Moroso has a nice filter/ cooler setup.

Takes a little to bleed the system out but I like it better than the stock set up. Vac boosters are plain ugly.

This is quick general info: The Corvette versions (steering rack) flow a higher GPM rating and higher pressure than the others. Corvette pumps also have provisions for a remote reservoir. The majority of the non-Corvette pumps have the reservoir that sits on the pump and is connected with an o-ring tube. The Corvette allows a thread-on return. The Corvette pumps flow in the 3.0 GPM range, the others are ~2.2 GPM. LT1 cars have a remote reservoir but the pump is reverse rotation. Speedway sells a lower pressure pump that has an AN return fitting for remote reservoirs.

So, is that a yes that most all GM Type II pumps are the same bolt pattern? Also where would I get a V-belt pulley for one? I will most likely get one off of a newere camaro at a pick and pull. At least for now.

No, there are two different bolt patterns, but I don't remember what they are.

KRC lists 80mm for Saginaw type 2 pumps and 72mm for theirs for the bolt pattern. Not sure if there is a third pattern out there.

There is the two bolt patterns but most are the bigger pattern. On the bigger bolt pattern some are threaded and some are not threaded just depending on the application.

What bolt pattern is the one from DSE? The brackets that I am having made for my car will be drilled for this bolt pattern. Will that be the same pattern as the Corvette and Camaros?

Should be, but you can call DSE and find out for sure.
