That is a big ass car... Any idea on color?

Auto Rod Technologies

Tell me about it, just about every car in here is about the biggest in its era, we just brought in a 40 pontiac for a full resto, just about out of room. lol

No idea on color yet, i know it's getting new interior and top though so it's pretty much a open book. Hopefully something that keeps retro feel but not the most common color, if you know what i'm saying.

How about Pontiac Tropical Lime. Its a 1971 color and one of my favorite of all the muscle car era and would look killer on your lemans.

Been making a lot of headway on this one. Body shell has been blasted and put in epoxy, a lot more floor patches than I would have guessed.
We also had to put a bunch of patches in the frame, but that is powder coated now and assembly has begun.
Really anxious to see the whole frame and suspension assembled with the motor and trans in it..

Axle is also out getting re-geared and should be a great match to the engine and trans.
Hopefully I can pick that up soon.

Today I trimmed the quarters, and started tig welding them on.. I just about finished one side, so if things go good I should have them both finished tomorrow.
Then back to the Impala we are restoring.

Subscribing.

Very nice looking work.

Do the body bushing sit on the Rockers or the floor pan? Just wondering if a full sized floor replacement can be installed while still on the frame?

You guys are just on the other side of Chicago. I might need to see what just a trunk and floor replacement would cost.

Auto Rod Technologies
06-08-2013, 11:21 AM
Thanks!

You will have to pull the body off, there wouldn't be enough room to do the work with the frame in the way anyways..
Plus you will either want to paint or bed line or spray something on the undercarriage for corrosion protection. The frame would also be in the way for this.

Chances are if the floor is bad, the inner wheel wells will need replaced or work, along with the quarters.

Maybe send a PM, we could tackle the metal work for you.. I could probably figure something out fairly accurate based on the time it took to do the work on this one.

Hoping to keep on this one a little bit longer yet but I also need to focus on the Impala..
We may strip down the doors, fenders, hood and trunk before moving on though.. I would like to know what we have to work with.

A bunch of different things, Had to trim off some of the bottom of the door, re weld and grind, a few spots I had to add metal, weld and grind..
I always do this type of work with the tig welder, it leaves a much better finished product.

LMAO.. Not sure about that, but you are welcome.. I did a Impala that's on my Facebook that has more pictures showing what we normally do, the Impala needed a lot more work to get the lines right so it's a good place to look.

Looks good, thanks for keeping it Pontiac powered!

I like to do upgrades and Love the LS type motors but I like to keep it in the same brand, Pontiac did have a LS motor but for this one I like the original motor. He's not going radical enough to make me think otherwise.

Thanks for the comment!! And yea you can get a lot of time wrapped up into building a car like this. But It sure beats the other options. We seem to do a lot of restorations or big projects that a lot of shops would shy away from because of all of the labor involved. There is no quick way to do a restoration, but I hate to see old cars get abandoned or scrapped..

One of the worst ones we have restored was a 37 packard, that car was REALLY rough and nothing is really available for it.

Tropic Turquoise is the color. I wasn't sure if it was a good choice or not but after spraying it I'm glad he picked it.

Replacing the quarters wasn't all that bad, however I wasn't to happy with the quality of the quarters. They came in pretty beat up. The fit wasn't terrible but I couldn't use the door jamb section because it wasn't correct. I can't remember what brand these were now though. It was quite a while ago. I do a fair amount of metal work so it wasn't to bad for me. I tend to be picky about the final product though.

A lot of it has to do with how bad things are behind the quarter, if you just need quarters it won't be as bad as if you have to do fabrication work.

Yea, you are in for a task then.
I've done a bunch of them just on the ground, but I also just picked up a chassis jig and we just put a 57' chevy on it. From now on I think this may be the way to go when completely going through a car.. Espcially if you need the front floor as well.. If not it may not be worth the time to set up a jig..

I posted pictures in my fabrication thread on here.

i just checked out your pictures and oh man that is a serious body cart , i have seen people take measurements and also seen some that dont do it when they change out the quarters since there is no way i can get my body cart set up like that which one would you recommend

This car is getting a full floor front to back, full inner quarter sections, which means the only item we are leaving alone is the rear trunk hinge and the firewall. At one point, the only thing that will be left on the 57 will be the firewall and the hinge mounting section. so with a build that serious I feel it needs a good jig.

However I'll attach a picture of another car we did that I didn't do nearly as much work setting it up before we began replacing panels.
These pictures are from a 64 Impala Convertible that we didn't do all of the jig work, but we did a lot of the work before we took the car off of the frame.
The jig basically replicates where the frame would be but gives you room to work around.
However I have re-bodied a lot of Camaro's which don't have a frame without a jig as well.. In many cases you just make the car fit as it is suppose to and move on, I just feel the Jig is a way to speed things up and add another item to the equation to help guarantee that everything is as it is suppose to be. With the Impala I spent a lot of time double checking everything before I welded anything. I won't have to do that as much with this jig. We tend to re-body a lot of cars so I just thought at this point it was a wise decision.

It has been a popular color choice, everybody seems to like it. They are trying to decide interior colors now.

Hi Chad. Looks Awesome, the colour looks great on there. Huge transformation from when she arrived at your shop. I think we all know the awesome metal work you do, do you also do the paintwork in house, or do send that out to be done? Cheers Trevor.

Paint work is what started all of this, so yes we do that all in house. we probably are still doing more body and paint work than anything else..
I also do a lot of paint tech support for my customers as we sell body shop supplies as well.. Carrying three paint lines.

I don't get much time off. lol.
