View Full Version : 5th Gen Snobbery
ok its not every 5th gen owner but I will say that I drive to and from work daily in my 1968 Camaro and I have yet in (that i can remember) over the last few years have a 5th gen owner give the standard Camaro wave, thumbs up or head nod? whats up with that?? really youre cars cool, but not that cool, you have bought youre way into a brotherhood, you better start giving the nod man, I know that every 5th gen owner here will pipe in, and good you better, and represent the camaro culture with the wave and nod to every camaro under the sun and no more snobbery, make people want to be part of camaro ownership!! just like boat owners honk and wave, were all happy to own a hot looking camaro from gen 1-5, and by the I get more waves from vette owners

Most of the gen5 owners in my town aren't even car people. Come to think of it, most are even women. I remember when I had my cam-only big convertered '00, I would wave at them, but most here v6's, or older women/men that didn't care about what everyone else was in.

I give any car I think is cool the wave, regardless of what it is. Anyone that would be snobby about their car (new or old) is kind of retarded. I like to think we all choose our cars because WE like them, not so we can stick our noses up and say to everyone else "hey, look what I have!"

Haha I tried giving a wave to a 11SS the other day on my way home from work...I was ignored like most 3rd genners are...then I put the smack down on him after the next stop light. After embarrassing him, he finally gave me a wave.

I'd say, just ignorance.
We used to have the Chev vs Ford vs Pontiac, vs Mopar groups back in the day. I'd say that there is more camaraderie between the classic musclecar guys of all makes, than there is between older and newer generations of the same vehicles.
Someone should tell those guys, if it weren't for the old school iron, that their cars wouldn't matter that much. Ha ha.

The "new car" people in any group are usually like that...either because they aren't into the whole brand and its history, or out of some sort of perceived status. Except for a few diehards, that usually doesn't change until the car hits its 2nd or 3rd owner.

I thought it was only jeep people that had an official wave. But for practicality's sake, I really only see it in effect on the trail or when there aren't too many cars around to distract the drivers.

they are selling over 80,000 cars a year. it's a daily driver for most and nothing more. i don't wave to other cruze owners.
I've gotten a wave from a few 5th gen guys when I'm in my 77 Z. I wave back, I'm polite lol.
I will say I find many of the 5th gen enthusiasts, um, interesting. yes, that'll do.

Had a greybeard on a Harley wave at me once. And I was on a Kawasaki sportbike. I think he was more about the fact we were both riding motorcycles then about which motorcycles we were riding. Not like those 'weekend biker' jackoffs. Having said that, I usually will not wave first, but I will return a wave when given. Owned my 4th gen Camaro for several years now and had a total of one guy wave, and he was in a 4th gen TA. Back in my Datsun 510 days, I'd get more waves. I think it was more of 'oh, your car runs too' wave...lol.

Rod...that wave is mostly a mutual thing for the 1st gen owners. 2nd Gen guys are starting their own thing now too. 5th gen guys won't start waving for another 40 years, but we'll all be in the nursing home by then.

I've never noticed any car snobbery among 5th Gen owners .
Most of them are pretty cool , and they like 1st and 2nd Gen Camaros .

If I waved at every 5th gen owner I've seen in Houston, I'd be driving with no hands on the wheel. They are that common. Most of them aren't car enthusiasts, just fancy commuter car owners. They probably would mistake your '68 for a Mustang.

I assume that 5th gen owner is oblivious to other cars on the road, probably has no idea what a 1st gen Camaro looks like.
Often I point out police cars, hot-rods, 40's, 50's classics, and others did not see them go by.
They must be busy texting....

It seems that everybody has a new Camaro. I am NOT impressed by them. Big deal it is a Camaro. A me too car. I would expect more acknowledgement from the older ones than the new ones, Gen one and two. even third gen. they are the ones you hardly see. The new Camaro you see at just about every corner.

I drive a 5th gen and I agree the majority of people who have them are just a daily driver who doesn't acknowledge anyone, let alone another Camaro of any year. With that said, I love the 1st and 2nd Gen Camaro's or any cool car and will acknowledge them when I see them... but I rarely see anyone with a 3rd or 4th Gen Camaro that the driver is waving...over time I have had every generation of Camaro but a 1st gen, but I want one eventually...I have to say the coolest car I've seen running lately is the Ponitac Safari that was on the race course with me last weekend...check out the pictures on Optima's site...

I was offered a very polite trade for a 2011 convertable yellow with black stripes and top along with a really good performance package on it. The guy was just awed at my car and loved !st gens so I don't know about why they don't wave but they probably like 1st gens like most respecting car enthusiast.
After a week of checking I realized he had 45k into it and it might not have been a bad trade for either of us considering the economy.
I work with a guy who's wife just bought a new Camaro convertable and she wouldn't know about the wave more than likely and who knows what else she might not do but she likes Camaro's and that's ok in my book.
I do understand what you are talking about and it is a prevalant vein in some groups of people these days. isn't it great that you can come hear and we understand and it isn't like that here .
A big wave to ya from here !!!!

To take it another step... I ride a bicycle on the road for excersize and some transportation. I raise a hand to the motorbikes as I see them as a kindred spirits. 2-wheels is 2-wheels. The majority of the time, I get a wave back.
To the original poster. I hope you're not waving to EVERY 5th gen on the road. Camaros are so over played around here. Only wave to the obvious hot-rodders. Too many bumble-bee drivers out there to expect some feeling of comradery from all of them.

Over here we wave and get waved at by anything remotely American or European pre 1970. The only ones who don't wave are the modern Lambo's Ferraris etc.
I guess if I saw a 5th gen whilst cruising on a sunny day we'd pull over have a chin wag. LOL!

x2.. for a minute I thought this was the Corvette forum... if you wanna wave, knock yourself out, if you don't get one in return, it's not the end of the world.
Just like when I'm out riding my bike (yes, it's a Harley if it matters)... I sometimes return a wave, most of the time I don't (mostly don't return it to Harley riders, actually). And for that matter, I'm not your "bro", either.
The same applies to cars.

They don't wave back because they are driving a 5th gen camaro and they are ashamed to be seen in a car that's full of so much fail.
