Lost a wheel on the freeway today...help me find a cheap replacement set!

Yup.

Was visiting a friend in Tennessee for the last 3 weeks. Just got back this morning at about 1am. First thing I did when I woke up was take the Nova for a little cruise, drove maybe 5-10 miles through town, got onto the freeway, drove about a mile and was going about 60 when the car jerked to one side and started making a grinding noise. Pulled over to find the driver side rear riding on the rotor. :jawdrop:

Looks like the studs just snapped and the wheel said "later dude!", which is weird because there was no wobbling or strange noises before it happened.

Anyway, I'm looking at these wheels now:

What would it take to fit those on a 69 Nova with tall ATS spindles and C5 brakes up front and LS1 rear brakes? I was running BMW M3 wheels but the offset/backspacing was all wrong, and even with 1.5" adapters up front, they hit the frame and severely limited my turning radius. I wanted to get some wheels with the right specs for my car, but they're way too expensive right now.

Any idea why your studs snapped? Were you running spacers? You may want to find that out before you lose your new wheels too!

Probably because I was running the BMW wheels without any spacer or adapter on GM studs. I still find it hard to believe, though, because I've been running those wheels for about 3 years on the stock rear end with no issues, but I ran it dry and destroyed the axles and gears so I had it rebuilt. I finished rebuilding the engine a few months ago and haven't even beat on it yet, and somehow I snapped new studs? :dunno:

I know people always wonder about BMW wheels being that .65mm off the standard GM 5x4.75. Maybe that was the problem, I dunno.

And Rod, I literally just saw his post and am talking to him about those wheels. :)

Check out the Corvette Forums classified if you're looking for a set of C6 take-offs. The front 5-spoke wheels are 18x8.5 with a 56mm offset and the rears are 19x10 with 79mm offset.

Broken wheel studs are usually due to either being over-torqued, or under-torqued. Running the BMW wheels on the GM wheel pattern increases the stresses on the wheel studs due to .012" positional difference, creating a combined loading condition of bending + tension instead of pure tension like it should be. The end result is approximately 20% higher internal stresses in the studs, so over-torquing them just became a lot easier to do. Otherwise, loose studs will break just as quickly due to a fluctuating loading scenario since the preload stresses are so low.

Not looking specifically for Corvette wheels, just looking for some cheap 5 spoke wheels with the proper bolt pattern that will hopefully give me my turning radius back.

Anybody? Those wheels from Summit are half off so I'd really like to know if they fit so I can snag em.

I also forgot I'm using 1.5" adapters up front, so I don't really know what that'll do to the measurements.

Maybe the 17x7's would be better?

The 1.5'' spacer will make it a 4.5" bs. I have the summit 5 spoke with a 18x8.5 with a 4.5"bs at it clears fine.

The adapters went from 5x4.75 to 5x120 and from the C5 hub size to the M3 hub size. I had rear adapters made but the wheels fit fine so I didn't use them.

Which is probably why the wheel went poof lol.

Chris, I'm not sure if I could even use the adapters since they'll have the 5x120 bolt pattern. Which is why I'm trying to find a wheel that will be able to just bolt up to the spindle and be good to go. I might just have to get the 17x7 with 4" of backspacing.

In that case the 6" bs probably wont work. I tried my 18x9.5 with a 6" bs on the front and they would hit the stock upper control arm when turning. Im not sure what would happen with tubular control arms or tall spindles.

I know it will cost more to do since it requires a multipiece wheel, but it would really be to your benefit to have the car measured for front and rear spacing and have the wheels specifically built for the car. At least you will not have a need for spacers and you can dial in the exact position you want. I did that with my HRE's. I also had 1/2" wheel studs installed on the car instead of the 7/16" it originally had.

17x8 with 4.5BS should fit on that nova all around, wrap them in 235-40-17. I dont know where you are in CA but youre welcome to test fit that size if you come out to the Ventura area, I have 2 sets of wheels for my car, and my street set is that size. Those wheels you linked are not a size that fits most muscle cars. You can pick up a set of Showwheels at the long beach swap meet for $550 cash too. Oh believe me, I eventually want to get some 3 piece wheels. But there's more important things I need to address so I'm just trying to get the car drivable again, preferably with my turning radius back!

I'm in San Bernardino. I wouldn't mind making the drive out there to test fit the wheels, but it's kinda hard to do with only 3 wheels, lol. Summit actually has 17x8's with 4.5" of BS, but they're the Cragar/Torq Thrust clones and I had TT's when I first got the car. Honestly I'm sick of them, since they're the stereotypical "muscle car" wheel.

I'll check that site and see if they have some cheap wheels that will look decent on the Nova. Thanks. :)
