View Full Version : TALL drivers, I need to know about some lower sitting seats..

Have been looking at Sparcos and one other from forum member TonySS I believe.

Really need something that sits the seat bottom part/tracks/runners fairly low.

My current seats are about 35 inches tall at the highest point when sitting with the seat back in the full upright position. It's more the bottom of the seat that is the problem.

Any ideas or advice?

Donnie

Cipher are the ones I'd like to with due to price and recline function plus having the option for 'lower' seat mounts/sliders.

I'm 6'4" and use Arizen seats. I don't have any measurement's to hand but I can barely fit my fingers between the seat and carpeted floorpan.

Which Arizen seat are you using?

Thank you,

Donnie,
I have a source that could possibly make you brackets that virtually sit right on the floor.. maybe he will chime in.
I can ask him and see... is this for your 69 Camaro?

Tony,

68 and yes it is.

I just really want to make sure I have at least some head room with the seat reclined 1 or 2 clicks back. I don't expect to be able to sit in the full upright position but the seats I'm using now have to be reclined ALL the way back just for my tall lanky ass to fit.

Thanks,

Donnie

I don't think you can get more room than my Kirkey racing seat. 3/16'ths of aluminum mounted 1/4 inch off the floor pan. It gives me a PERFECT seating position, one that is completely unattainable with a regular seat. Just another option...

Donnie,
I think Tony is talking about me. I fabricated my seat mounts out of 3/16"x15.5"x17" steel plate, you could also use 1/4" aluminum plate. I made a cardboard template 15.5x17" and simply punched the floor mount holes in the cardboard then flipped it over and punced the seat track mount holes in the same cardboard. I transferred these locations to the plate and drilled them out to 1/2". Bolted the plate to the seat tracks then bolted the whole assy to the floor. The seats now set about as low as possible without removing the tracks I'm 6'2" and have about 2" head room now.

I am 6'4" and have sparcos in my GTO. They mount with custom mounts that lower the seat 2 or 3 inches and move it back 3 inches. I have room for a helmet now. :)

Thank you guys.

Steve,
Do you have any photos? Which seats did you end up going with?
I really like the sparcos but am ultimately having the seats re-covered so trying to stay affordable as the ciphers seem to be close to identical as far as shape/look.

How are those seats you're using Tony? I mean as far as height compared to the other Cipher seats..? I like the look of yours just fine but want to make sure I get some of the 'lower' ones..

Nevermind Steve. I don't need a pic :)

I'm going to do what you did but hopefully with the 1/4 aluminum to save a little weight.

Tony,

Get back to me whenever on those seats of yours and I'll order some on June 5th.

Thanks again,

DZ

Sorry I don't have any pics but just imagine a plate 15.5"x17" with 2 four bolt patterns drilled in it. I would also go with the 1/4" aluminum plate if I did it again. There were a couple of notches I had to cut in the plate to allow it to lay flat on the floor but nothing complicated. I forgot to add that I used button head allen screws in the seat track.

I will be watching this thread closely. I am 6'4". I have some WRX seats to go into a second gen Firebird. I am just doing a frame out of square tubing, so the seat will be close to sitting on the tracks, but it still may be a bit high. A helmet will likely be tough so I may wind up going the Kirkey route if a track day is coming up.

The ones I'm running now are 34.75 from the bottom of the slider to the top of the seat.. and this is with the seat set exactly vertical. No one drives like that... when I recline it back to driving position it closer to 32.5"

Thanks Tony.

I'm going to order them on the 5th. If I go the flat plate mount route, the way I understand it..I'll lose the slide function but the seats will sit as low as possible and I won't have to buy seat brackets?

Thanks,

Donnie

I am running Sparco's. These are reclining and FIA certified. The Sparco rails are very low profile.

I welded a plate to the rail and floor for mounting.

No, you wont loose the slide function.. the way Steve explained it, you make the mounting plate and then bolt the sliders on to the plate, and the seats on top of the sliders.

One of the best thigs to do is remove the seat pan, fillet it 1/2" so it sits lower and reattach it 1.5" further back. That coupled with a good racing seat and low pro brackets (there are some good ideas above) will allow good headroom. Not sure if there is anyone taller than me on the board, but I fit much better once I attacked the seat pan.
