How large can wheels be on the rear should be 87 olds cutlass supreme? I was thinking about 18x8 or 17x8 on the rear.

18x8 will fit. You'll need some pretty low profile tires if your car is/will be lowered any though. I would go with 7s in the front. 3.5 to 4 inch backspacing all around and watch out for weird offsets that will alter the backspacing.

I have 18x10's on the back of my 80 Malibu but if the cutlass wheel wells are anything like the Monte's then you'll probably have 1/4 panel interference....mine are 5" backspace and I rolled the 1/4 lip slightly, no other mods as of yet. I do plan to notch the frame and possibly the wheel tubs for a larger tire when it comes time to replace the 275's that are on it

I had 17x8's all around on my '87 with 245/45 tires up front and 255/45 tires out back. 4" back spacing had them fitting really well.

The front did tend to hit the inner part of the fender on large dips in the road. So I really needed something more like 4.5" BS up front.

I'm in the process of notching my frame and cutting/rolling the fender lip and have ordered a set of 17x11" Torque Thrust II Classic wheels and a set of 315/35ZR17 tires. Just test fitting them right now in the wheel wells and they look awesome! :)
