Time to bring my project to pro-touring.com. I will try to start the build thread off right this time and start with a few of the rendering pictures by Kris Horton. I've had the basic ideas in my head for some time and with his input and talent, made them into the renderings you see here. We will stay true to these renderings as possible as the car gets completed.

Here are a few pictures of the car taken recently that show how it is coming along. The car is currently still sporting its 'old school' 90's paint.

LOVE the use of Aero!

speedjohnston
05-23-2012, 04:36 PM
I am trying to incorporate a lot of Aero as its being built as an unlimited car to hopefully run silver state some day. First, when its ready, I would like to run some 1 mile events and get a 200mph+ timeslip.

I think the motor is set back about 10 or 11 inches. This will give me room I need to have the waterfall style hood.

The rims are forgeline 18 x 13 rear with 345/35's and 18 x 10.5 front with 295/30's. I should have room to go bigger, I will just test these out first and see how it goes. I will try to post up some suspension info this weekend.

Nice! Events planned for it??

The only one I'm really trying to make so far is a 1/2 mile local event for top speed in august. The car still needs some work (and money) to get ready. This will be a good test before going to Ohios one mile next spring. Also, eventually silver state classic would be the ultimate test for the car.

Here is a little info on the suspension for v8240z. I'm using the SPC adjustable arms, AFX spindles, Baer extreme plus (6s) front brakes with 14" rotors, Howe tall ball joints, center link and tie rods, and a speedway engineering sway bar. Shocks are from RCD and are a modded Bilstein.

60015

60016

The steering box is a custom Lee box with a slower ratio for high speed.

60017

I had some custom spring adjusters made to make it even easier to adjust height.

Real nice. Are you looking to follow in the steps of Polly Trans Am and be the first Procharged Camaro to win SSCA? Which head unit is it, F1R, F2? Did you do the arches or were they already on the car?

Stunning extreme build. I'll watch this one for sure.......

The funny thing is I found out about the polly trans am after I was well into the build (its actually been a few years). I am running the F2 blower, and the arches were on the car when I bought it in 1991. At the time they had been tacked and were cracking so I had the filler removed and had a solid bead welded, and then refilled to smoothen them back out.

My latest arrival was my GoodAero wing. Beautiful piece in carbon fibre. Only weighs about 5lbs. Hard to imagine all that force on something so light.

60176

60177

Its not completely mounted yet, but we were making some adjustments on friday. Needs to be lowered just a tiny bit and only the bottom mounts are attached, the upper mounts hopefully welded in place on monday if everything lines up ok. :fingersx:

This is the 'little monster' under the hood. A 581 ci BBC with an F2 procharger. With a mild tune and only 5500 rpm the horsepower was 1234 and climbing and the torque was 1178lb-ft and climbing. By 3400rpm its allready making about 800lb-ft of torque. At the time it was on the dyno it had no intercooler and a different carb hat, and a smaller than recomended headers and exhaust. Although I won't (probably) run it that high, peak power for this cam is suppose to come at 7400rpm. After some break in and some fine tuning, intercooler, and maybe some more boost it could be.... ?

60470

speedjohnston
06-08-2012, 08:25 PM
Headers were custom made with 2 1/2" primaries going into 5" oval exhaust pipe. A custom 'flat' collector was made to keep some ground clearance.

Thanks guys. Glad you like it. I wasn't sure if it would be well received being a little on the 'not very subtle' side. lol

I went to Rossler (as he builds the fastest automatics in the world) to build me a 4L80E that had engine breaking, could be manually shifted and handle full throttle shifts with that kind of torque into overdrive. The overdrive was modified with extra clutch packs that weren't even on the market at the time of purchase. It also has all those sfi goodies so I don't lose my toes.

There was no budget, just patience and lots of overtime at work. As far as expenses, I would rather not post that (wife may be peeking in lol) but if there is a piece in particular you can send me a PM and I'll be glad to help.

I also added in an approximately 45 gallon fuel cell custom made by fuel safe complete with bladder, foam, surge tank, and dual A1000 Aeromotive pumps. It was too big to go in from above so the 'support cage' is actually built above it and it mounts from below.

Car looks AWESOME.

This is how I drove it for over a decade. The paint (when it was new) is one of those that looks a lot better in person. I drove it as a pro-touring car even with the blower on it for a while, but it wasn't popular up here at the time so I gave in to be more competitive in the 1/4.

This is a crazy awesome car...I was reading I think, Super Chevy or Camaro performance, but one of these mags, and they said, these type of cars are next gen pro-touring, and they were trying to figure out a name...because they dont fall intot he normal window of PT... I say these cars are just sexy touring...

I haven't got a hood builder yet. They kind of need the car so it will probably be someone local.

You've got neat stuff! Why did you use a carb instead of efi?

speedjohnston
07-12-2014, 04:51 PM
There is no real significant advantage for me using EFI. Although I have spent a lot on the car, a lot of it is built with the best bang for the buck in mind. In a procharged application like mine, you may even make more power because of the larger fuel droplets which gives a greater 'cooling effect'. I understand there are other advantages to EFI but.... I just wanna go fast. Lol
There are also categories in land speed racing that are different records for carbs and EFI. Etc etc.
That being said, I could switch to EFI at anytime, but for now I would just like to get it running and stop spending.

Do you have any shots of the exhaust completed? I really like the Big Reds visible in the hood vents.

speedjohnston
07-12-2014, 07:46 PM
The exhaust isn't complete yet, but most of the parts are here when I get the car back home. I will hopefully have that complete next month some time. I will update when its done.

perfect! car is amazing. id break my neck if i saw that thing driving down the street. out of curiousity, what size carb are you running? 1150?

speedjohnston
07-13-2014, 05:18 PM
It's just a little 850. A dual needle and seat 850 is good for well over 1600hp. It's weird because my last motor had dual 750's on a 6-71 to make 630 hp. My carb is only a single needle and seat so I am trying to decide if I should upgrade. The motor has already made over 1200hp on the engine Dyno with a mild tune so the carb is close to its limit.
