View Full Version : Mirror Problems Solved

morrisclassic
05-15-2012, 06:54 AM
I almost pull over into the side of a car in Asheville, NC. So I said enough of this Useless Mirror Crap!
After buying mirror after mirror and glueing and everything else I finally developed a solution.
We have a fix for the dreaded mirror problems.
We have a convex mirror for the passenger side
and also will promise that your mirrors will be Useful not Useless
You can even tighten up the mirror head if ever needed.
We can go into production depending on the interest.
The mirrors will be Cheaper than your Deductible and Cheaper
than the multiple sets of other mirrors that we have bought.
So let us know by posting your comments here.
Thank You, Billy

What is the solution , Billy ???

Jeff,
The solution is a new set of mirrors from Morris Classic Concepts.
We are just testing the market to see how much interest there is.
I have a set of mirrors on my 69 Camaro that have been on since last year with zero problems.
You can see all the way around the car. The mirrors are almost identical to the stock mirror in
size and also don"t forget the Convex passenger mirror for added side view.

As almost everyone knows there are mirrors out there but they all have 2 things in common 1: they will not hold their position 2: there is still a blind spot on the passenger side because the mirror won't adjust inward far enough, but our new mirrors eliminate all of these problems. The mirror head can be tightened up if needed.I have had a set on my 69 Camaro for a year and they still hold their position. I have not had to tighten the mirror head.

Billy, are you doing just mirror or the housings too? Where are you sending manufactoring too?(you dont have to answer this if you dont want too)

Reason i am asking is i am in the glass business (own a small retail shop) and was in auto glass for 15+ years and we still dabble a little on the restoration side.

BTW, just installed a set of your belts on my 70 camaro, great fit! thanx, Mike

morrisclassic
05-17-2012, 06:29 AM
We are getting pricing on the parts now. The set will cost more
than the ones you can buy now. Not a lot more. Like I said before these Mirrors
will eliminate the Passenger Side Blind Spot. You can adjust the mirror in so you can see
the cars beside you that are hidden by the B Pillar. Also the Passenger mirror is Convex for added side view.
The mirrors will have a Great warranty on them also.
Even though we don't think the warranty will be needed even with years of use,
but the biggest difference with our design is they will stay set and the swivel ball has srews for tightening if ever needed.
Passenger mirror will be useful. You can actually see cars beside you on a 3 lane highway. Maybe this needed
to be in the Safety and Tech Equipment section!!
I will try to post a picture. Billy

I was always telling the passenger to adjust the side mirror for me. Not anymore.

Billy,
I was raising the subject of the screws for appearance purposes. For long term I recommend high quality stainless and the use of antisieze during assembly to prevent seizing or galling.
Also, and I know it goes without saying because you guys make great stuff but hopefully the screw heads don't stand out.

Definitely interested in these even more now. Was in Tennessee visiting a friend for a few weeks and came back to find the passenger side repop mirror with the glass sitting on the ground! I was able to tighten the mounts for the pivot ball, but the glass broke when it hit the ground, and I don't know if anyone sells just the glass...

I'm just not sure how the rectangular mirrors would look on a 69 Nova...

We like to call this another Safety Item. You will actually be able to see the lanes to the right so changing lanes will be Safer!! Mirrors that you can actually see out of.
Orders from a manufacturer for the mirrors are being placed.
Installed mirrors on the Camaro today , has a Much wider field of view. The mirror will adjust in to the point that you can see the door handle !
We are discussing the length of warranty that we will be offering with the new mirrors , which I can tell you now that it will be a multiple year warranty for staying in the adjusted position!!

Roger,
The glass is not interchangeable however,
We can assemble you one that will be opposite the USA model. That way you would just bolt the convex mirror assembly on the left side of your Camaro. We also ship the least expensive way as we have customers that are outside the USA and we don't take advantage of customers by adding to the shipping charges.

Okay Guys I need some input on the mirrors.
Would it look better for the era of the Camaros and other cars to have the flat glass mirrors on both sides?

The Field of View with the flat glass mirror will still be Great, You can see the entire lane on your left and the side of your car.

With the Convex glass you would be able to see a little more but the distance of course is harder to judge.
I would Really appreciate all of your Opinions. Thanks, Billy

My thoughts are if you can offer both then do so; that would allow the folks that have no issues with a more modern look and make the ones that do want era correct look happy.
I would probably go with the flat glass with the view you stated. I currently have no side view mirror so anything would be an improvement.

Flat on the passenger side , if the field of vision is good .
If the field is not wide enough , then a wide-angle convex would be good .
But , if a flat mirror would get the job done , then it would be good to not have the distance perception issues of a convex mirror ..

Yes initially our mirrors cost more but after the Replacement of the First set of Repos which have you looking at the lines in the road you have saved about $90.00 .

None of the Mirrors on the market today Convex or Flat Glass Will Not Eliminate the Right Side Blind Spot

Yeah, I don't remember which mirror I bought for the passenger side, but I'm pretty sure it was the cheapest mirror available. After maybe 5 years the glass just fell out one day. I guess $30 for 5 years isn't bad, but obviously I expected it to last the life of the car. Not to mention the fact that I couldn't see a damn thing out of it, so even at $150, I'd get a set of these mirrors. I'd prefer round as I've never seen a 3rd gen Nova with rectangular mirrors, but if it means better safety and vision, I'll take em.

And Billy, I think it'd be best to offer both options, let people choose if they want both mirrors to have the convex glass or the flat glass. As long as it doesn't ridiculously obscure the view (I.E., in the mirror, it looks like a car is a good 2 car lengths away but in reality it's like a foot away lol) I think I'd rather have convex on both sides.

But I've never owned a car with a wide angle mirror, so maybe that's just me.

How difficult would it be to change out the glass is someone purchased the convex and then wished they hadn't?
Would it be an option at the consumer level or pretty risky?
The convex passenger sside is something I would like to try on for size but that isn't really feasible.

Some of the late model mirrors that offer a convex mirror inset flush in the corner of a flat mirror are kind of inspirational but they utilize a much larger glass.

I have been pondering 2nd Gen Camaro mirrors but these would be more economical especially when you consider paint.

That would be pretty commendable and I for one would appreciate that recourse.

I think that is the route I would take because I am sure that the convex mirror you have chosen is pretty subtle anyway, and not overly distorted.

I would like to see some more pictures of your prototype at it's current stage of development. How about some shots of the mirror from the front of the car? I'd like to see how noticable the tensioning screws are.

We will be placing an order this week for the parts. So in a short time we will have the mirrrors ready for sale.

It is just a short matter of time before you will be adjusting the Drivers side mirror frequently so we suggest just replace both mirrors at the same time and eliminate the need to continually adjust them and eliminate the Passenger Side Blind Spot.

The Clear Shot Mirror looks a little different than a stock mirror.
Most evident is the 2 small phillip head screws in the back of the
mirror that tighten up the ball and socket if ever needed.
Billy

1989GTA
01-25-2013, 03:05 PM
To use it on my 65 Skylark I would most likely have to use the factory rubber gasket due to the profile of the door. Do you have a measurement for the base of the mirror. Length and max width?

morrisclassic
01-25-2013, 04:02 PM
The mirror base is 4.75" long . 3/4" wide at the mirror end and tapers to 1/2" toward the fender.
Add about 1/8' to 3/16" for the gasket between the mirror base & the door
Hope this helps
Billy

1989GTA
01-25-2013, 05:14 PM
The issue I have is that the sheet metal on the door where the mirror goes is concave. The factory gasket is round on the bottom to take up the space. That is what I am going to have to figure out in order to use your mirrors. The dimensions are close enough. If the sheet metal was flat there would be no problem.

Taylor1969
01-26-2013, 04:58 AM

I have not driven the car yet so I can't report how they are in traffic but I can definately see a wider field of view out of the RH mirror than I could with the stock ones I removed. BTW, I have a pair of one year old stock mirrors for sale if anyone is interested.

X2 on the Recommend!!!

And for those of you who only want the driver side mirror, be smart, install them both! The way traffic is these days you need all the vision you can get. Two small holes on the passenger door and the job is done. The passenger door already has a backup plate under the skin to anchor the mirror.

I received my mirrors from Morris Classics and they are a fine product. As I stated in my earlier posts I bought them for safety reasons. I wanted a wider field of view and I need one for the passenger side any ways. I knew going in that these mirrors were not designed for my car however I thought I could make them work without to much difficulty and this turned out to be the case. My doors are concaved where the mirrors mount and the Morris mirrors are meant to be mounted on a flat surface.

I had a couple of options in mind such as using the 1965 Buick Skylark factory mounts and cut them to fit the foot of the Morris mirror. The other was to try and use the Morris mirror plastic base. The latter turned out to be easy to do. What I did was use black silicone sealant to fill the gap on the bottom of the plastic base. I drilled a couple of holes in the base at each end so that the silicone would ooze up in there and hold in place better. I only put the sealant on about the last 1 inch of the base at each end. The sides appear to fit and seal just fine.

I laid masking tape over the spot where the mirrors were going and applied some oil to the top of the tape. This would help in keeping the sealant from sticking to the tape after the sealant had dried. On the drivers side I mounted the mirrors using the factoy bolt holes. While usable and an improvement I felt the mirror location would be better if I use the rear factory hole and drilled a new hole. Car will be getting painted anyways so no big deal. On the passenger side there was no mirror so I had to drill new holes anyways. So yes, my mirror problem is solved. Here are a couple of pictures.

I started off with the Morris seat belts and was very satisfied. I sat on a set of these mirrors for 6 months while my car was in paint and just installed them over the weekend. They fit very well and look good too. I only wish they were available in black. I had the body shop paint the mounting base. I just need to figure out a way to properly mask off the locking screws and ball so I can paint the mirror casing. But for those who want to rock the chrome, they come with a nice lustrous plating.

I just bought a set of these from summit. Is there a difference on the left and right? my passenger mirror when pulled in close to the door is hard to see. I can't see anything behind me at all.

Iceman,
The mirrors can be used on either side. What car are these installed on?
You said you can't see anything behind you? Explain a little bit more or call me.
Can you see someone standing a foot beside the quarter panel of the car?
Thx, Billy

The passanger side mirror pulled all the way in to the point it almost touches my door on a 67 camaro is pointing to where the closes thing I can see in the passanger rear of the car is 6ft to the right. I can't see anything from my tail panel to 6ft out to the right. Everything tail panel 6ft out plus I could see.

Later this week I'll get some pictures and measurements.

Iceman,

Unusual , but we will make sure the mirrors work as advertised.
We probably need you to return the Passenger Side mirror for to us to check
& replace. Round or Rectangular mirror?
The mirror base could be out of Spec..
Thx, Billy

Rectangular.

Later this week ill head over to my car and check it again. Worst case ill install the drivers mirror on the passenger side and see if it changes anything. I wish i could just angle the glass itself little more

By the way the mirror are very solid and stay in place. Very impressive quality piece.

If you look closely at this pic you can see my window felt by looking in the mirror

Here is where i had to pull them in to see. If i had a 68 or 69 i would have moved the mirrors closer to the fender

Iceman,
The mirrors should work in the factory locations. We tried different
mounting positions during development and found that it didn't make
any difference front or back from the factory mounting point. It is the
Patented Design of the mirror & base that Eliminates the Blind Spot.
Can you send us some pictures of your Camaro
of the seat belts & mirrors so we
can put it on our web page?
Thx, Billy

I have spent several months researching the best possible mirror to use on my '67 Camaro. I was planning on using 2nd gen mirrors until i realized how small and useless they are. 4th and 5th gen Camaro are too big and the profile does not match the car. I then decided to look into the GT3 mirrors from APR. The housing is first class carbon fiber, but did not realize how small these mirrors are. They measure 5.5" by 2.5". The grub screw on the base has limited adjustability since it is mainly designed to keep the mirror in place without further adjustment. Other than that the mirrors look awesome on the car, but have not decided if I should keep them or not. I mean how hard should it be to design a manual adjust, functional mirror. This has been really frustrating. Ideally I want to see a 5.5" x 3.5" mirror in a carbon fiber shell that can be adjusted manually and stays in place. That would be awesome.
