Well, it looks like I am going to Texas as I really want to see this car complete in person.
I have set a goal to be plowing over cones in front of everyone at the fall Good Guys Texas nationals in September. Not exactly pressing for time but should give me a push to have it running and ironed out a little more by then.
No serious updates, I dropped the transmission and swapped out torque converters for a Neil Chance 3000 stall, filter/gasket, started wiring up my Quick Shift 2 trans controller and doing some general wiring tiding up. I also rerouted all of my lines and cables out of the trans tunnel. Its fun integrating 4 non original systems into a classic mustang and still retain all of the original operating systems appearance. I ditched the fender mount starter relay and am taking advantage of the one on the starter so that cleaned up a number of wires running back and forth. I also picked up a set of 80lb injectors (from 47's) so I could have shoes to grow into. Finally got my Lokar gas pedal installed, just need a bracket at the throttle body.

I did a thing, just when I'm nearing completion with my car I track down a new one. This is my old 89 5.0. I bought this right after I graduated high-school back in 2004, was our get away car at our wedding, I drug it out to southern Georgia when I joined the Navy and then sold it a few years after that since I had a kid on the way. I have been looking for the car since 2010 when I moved back to Texas and have finally tracked it down a week ago. So Friday of last week I boarded a plane for Jacksonville, FL, had a buddy pick me up from the airport and drive me to the car. 30 minutes later I had keys in hand and headed west. I put just over 1,000 miles on the car in 1-1/2 days with zero knowledge of the overall condition. Short of some flat spotted, 12 year old tires, fixed back race seats and straight pipe exhaust, the car didn't miss a beat! I'm now trying to return it back to a clean, nicely modded daily, removing much of the "boy racer" doo dads I put on it when I was in my early 20's and some of the "professional" repairs done to it. But I'm in heaven with the car and my wife can finally stop hearing me talk about it all the time. She even likes it enough to have our son take our picture with it.
After I got it home, installed new headlights and removed all the excess gauges.

Before picking up the fox I got the exhaust dropped, fully welded and painted. Installed the driveshaft safety loop and worked on wiring up the starter and trans controller. I spend WAY too much time on routing wiring but I'm semi OCD on stupid ****. I also wired up my sequential LED taillights and installed new lenses. Soft mounted my new Joes Racing fuel filler cap, it'll be black to better match. I had to swap out headlight buckets since the re-pop ones that came installed on my Mustangs To Fear nose piece are garbage and the rings were at minimum a 1/2" off.

I sent the family to Disney for a week and decided to take off time from work to thrash on the car, it turned out being record high temperature outside so I didn't get as much done as I wanted but I still got a ton of stuff knocked out. Completed fuel lines, tank hard mounted, E85 sensor adapted in and Megasquirt modified to accept it, new spark plugs, timing set, engine cooling fan relay module built and wired up, brackets for radiator and intercooler fabricated and installed, radiator hoses finalized, front suspension tightened up and ride height set, brake system lines bent and installed, bracket for the brake bias built and installed, 1 front caliper needed rebuilt again, brake system bled, sway bar connected, spindles drilled out for the Maximum Motorsports bumpsteer kit (thanks again Icemanard), fluid in trans, tracked down a belt for alternator, wired up alternator, and I'm sure I'm missing out on some other big steps I finished off.
This weekend I put fuel in it, primed the system (no leaks!!) and loaded a tune in the computer. There was something wrong with the tune and when I turned the key on the injectors kicked on and proceeded to fill the combustion chambers with fuel in no time flat (80lb/hr injectors and 450lph pump flow a ton of fuel). So that is something I'm investigating right now after the stink of fuel subsides from my garage.

I was fighting connectivity issues between Megasquirt and my laptop before my 2 week trip out to North Carolina. Now that I'm back I've removed Tunerstudios completely from my computer and reloaded it. Going to grab some more fuel and try loading software again. It is irritating being so close and something as simple as not having the correct 1's and 0's is pissing me off.

It had dropped the firmware somehow but I was able to jumper it and get it communicating again. Cut a new tune for it yesterday on the latest firmware and hope to see if it'll take the new tune. I've been having issues with the signatures not matching so lets hope this works.

I still have a ton of tuning to do, there are a lot of things "off" on the tune. I have a lot of wiring to clean up as I tore down a lot of it while troubleshooting the ECU. Also, drove the Fox down from DFW to Houston to pick up a set of Cobra Kevlar seats for the 66. After a couple days of head scratching, measuring and installing the seat 30 times I now have a driver's side seat installed. Time to get a few things wired up and finesse the tune some more to get it drive-able.

No real progress on the car lately. I cleaned up some underdash and underhood wiring, broke the throttle cable and pretty much decided it needs the front fenders flared.... I've been busy working on my 89 since it's the daily and needs a lot of TLC so it's been taking up my time.

What's the term? Project scope creep? Anyways, I picked up some used (new to me) 315/30-18's and slapped them on all 4 wheels. They fit pretty good but just like the 255's, they catch on the forward radius of the fender wheel opening, but worse. So now do I put spacers on the wheels and run some type of flare (would need to make the rear matched), or figure out how to cleanly trim the fender opening? I'm not opposed to the "JDM" overfenders either. Over the past few years building this thing, I've really started liking flares and think they really go far in toughing up the appearance of cars. I haven't been able to find a whole lot of early Mustangs with appealing flares outside of the Maier stuff. So now I'm torn. I've done all this work to fit wide tires under the stock body but the front has the clearance issues. I'm not really wanting to section the fenders at this moment

if you cant make it work by messing with the stock fenders, i would look at JDMFenderFlares619 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/4-Mustang-Fox-Fender-Flares/153153597666) on ebay. I've seen these particular flairs in person and they look good.

Do they steer without hitting other areas? If so, just cut. You won't miss the sheetmetal. Fitting such huge tires is all about hammers and angle grinders, and it's worth it. Spacers are all about messing up the steering and adding scrub . . .

While I agree, the metal is part of the curve and may look silly if I just lob it off.

I've been having issues getting the car to run and stay running. Thinking I had the tune all screwed up I had a buddy come down to help me out on it. After a couple hours of keyboard clicking and head scratching we concluded that I had a vacuum leak somewhere. So loaded with regret of having to remove everything to pull the intake I ordered some fresh gaskets and set to work. I think I found my leak before getting very far in. The elbow for the throttle body, when removed tore the gasket in a weird manner that made me look further into it. Turns out the flange had a MASSIVE low spot, so I flat filed it with a course file the stuck some 80 grit on a 2x4 and got to sanding. Came out pretty good, this time though I went with some RTV sealant instead of a paper gasket. I also got a new Innovative LC-2 wideband since the LC-1 I have isn't working. ALS, turns out my brand new MSD coil is junk. I stuck an OEM type coil off of my fox and it started running better, so I ordered a basic $16 coil. So hopefully this fixes the issues I've been having.
Before right after I drug the flat file across it a couple times

Just do the baseball bat, maybe with the addition of some torch heat for motivation. You should be able to get enough space to clear the tires under some lateral axle squirm this way--aim for at least 1/4" inch outside the sidewall. Cutting of the inner fender will only help (yet add additional work, but that's why you're here) . . .

I have no idea what is going on with the images. They were there...maybe post in the forum help section and Larry can address it?
I agree that blue paint with the gold wheels will look great.

Update: all 4 flares are built and about 60-70% body worked. The MS2 ECU died so I replaced it (after much troubleshooting) with a Microsquirt unit that plugged right in. I've been driving it and finding out what all is wrong with it: turbo oil drain isn't draining properly causing oil in the charge pipe, throttle cable has an over centering issue, trans only shifts 1-2 so may have to upgrade my homemade bracketry to a true kit, turn signal switch **** the bed and is causing all sorts of weird lighting issues and I need to wire up the flex sensor and fan control to the ECU. Its a blast to drive regardless and gets a lot of attention, the old folks on the street behind me give me the evil eye every time I drive by. It sounds like a damn 747

I can relate.
I had trouble even cranking it in my garage and backing it out of the driveway(when mine was running), I felt like I was rattling the neighbors windows!
One neighbor is not pleased, but it now pays to be the president of the homeowners association. Ha!

Could it not be the drain but the fact its got too much pressure and pushing oil past the seals into the charge system?
as for the rest if the stuff, Damn Gremlins. I am scared of the trouble shooting days.

I replaced the turn signal switch, fixed a couple broken 50 year old wires and now my turn signals and brake lights are working again. I built a new throttle bracket to pull the cable straight, I haven't fixed the trans yet as I'm not sure what's going on with it. I started pulling some of the turbo kit off to fix some clearance and fitment issue, if I ever have to pull the down pipe it is almost impossible to get back in place and the turbo has a slight "nose down" fitment. I did upload a quick video before pulling it apart.

I don't feel like reading through all the thread right now. But, If you are using a AOD transmission? The AOD has a pretty goofy shift sequence. I put a 5.0 and AOD in my 66 F100, I'm not real happy how it shifts. It skips 2nd gear unless you manually shift it in a certain sequence. If you do have a AOD do some googling, you will find info. I have bought a new valve body form Silver Fox performance. Several people recommended him., it took awhile to get it as he is a 1 man show.
But, I haven't installed it it.
If you do have a AOD, hope this helps you or someone else.

What controller are you using? If this valve body doesn't fix my AOD, I will be getting rid of it.

I’ve been enjoying driving this and letting the auto tune work its magic. Right now I’m in the blocking phase as well as tackling other projects such as a 4r70w swap in another 66 Mustang.

No updates lately, been working on other cars to help fund other things. I did a 4r70w and US Shift swap in a 66 convertible and have been restoring an 82 Capri 5.0 that was abandoned for 20years for my in-laws. 166941166942

I am not a for guy (not that I don't like them, just never owned one until I got the 51 f1) but I always thought that year Capri with a Mustang hatch looked mean.

I’ve been busy working on some other projects for friends and family, but I did drag the car out of storage and to a local show for the first time in years. After driving the car around I’ve discovered the automatic isn’t what I want in the car. So I’m going to pull it out and swap in a T5. I know they’re known for being fragile but they shift really well and I don’t beat my cars so hopefully it will last. If not, I’ll build an Astro trans. My son is ready for me to paint it too.... 168537168538168539

Question for ya...
You put mini tubs in the car and are running 315’s on the back. I really like the way you backhalfed the car.
If you did nothing different except use a full tub instead of a mini-tub how much bigger would you have been able to go on the rear tires?

The mini tubs weren’t the limiting factor… the frame rails were.
