I have a 30 454 block i have a chance to buy a set of 30 over j.e. pistons i am going to buy a new set of rings for the je pistons is it safe to just do a lite hone job on the cylinders. so my question is will the new rings seat without any problems . or am i going to have problems .im trying to get away with having the sent to the machine shop and bore the cylinders again

Try putting this down in the engine threads, Lee. Not many members follow this one too closely (just us weirdos...) :)

It depends on the bore size and condition. We clean bores with a Flex Hone brand dingleberry hone. They're about $40 and should be matched to the piston rings. Knowing the ring part number and/or composition will help them determine which grit and material to spec for the hone.

Are the cylinders truly round and free of taper and/or ridges?

0.030 is what the block was bored to, but what has it worn out to if it was used since? If stored, are you going to be removing any rust?


Are you planning on using file-fit rings this time around?
