My '69 is still at DSE and I've been already thinking about my next project. I have been looking into doing a '69 Mach 1/ fastback or a early GTO. Since I already have a Pontiac, I'm leaning more towards a Mustang. I wouild really like to find one that has paint/body already done and just add suspension/wheels&tires/6spd. What do you guys think? I really don't want a car like my Camaro, just a real nice driver. I have also been talking to Kyle about building another '69 for a track car. I talked with Jason@MTI about building a 427 LS2 motor, 6spd, Kyle's new front subframe and rear link system, monster brakes, painting it blk primer and taking it to track events..

How many cars does your garage hold SW?

I think a mustang would be cool, I like 69's it would look good next to the camaro!

damn...only 25? hehehe....as we all know...no matter how big our garages are, we could always use more space!

As long as it doesn't interfere with you doing a track Camaro, I'd like to see you do a 67 fastback, or 69 Mach 1. I think the 67 has the best lines of any 'stang.

More than likely you will NOT find one with a paint job up to your standards.. well not for a reasonable amount of money. And even if it looks good you will always wonder what is going on under the shiny surface..

Lets face it.. if the car has a killer paint job and is either unfinished or filled with inexpensive parts then what are the odds that the paint was done right?

One exception would be to find a completly restored Mustang and then modify it.. So long as you like the factory colors and trim this is a good idea.

Personally I'd like to see you do a GTO. Something comfortable to cruise in, but can still take the twisties at a respectable level. Somewhere in between the Lexus and the Camaro.

Being a Mustang guy with a '70 Mach 1, I say go for it. You can still find good '69 fastbacks for reasonable coin... $10-$12k should get you a good complete running car with a solid body and decent paint. And depending on how hardcore you wanna go with suspension/engine/tranny mods, I'd guess you could probably complete the car for $20-$25k total.

Steve Chryssos

Do the Mach 1. And you don't need to know anything about them. I'm sure Kyle Tucker is just itchin' to build something other than a 69 Camaro.

One of the best looking cars ever is a 69 / 70 Shelby. Imagine a Mustang, with Shelby glass, Pro Toured out. 18" Shelby 5 spokes, Cobra SVT drivetrain. Were ready to strart now. Make it Aqua and white, with a soft top!

SW,
Two comments,LOL
1- :help!: Please don't do an early GTO, I can not compete with you! :lmao:
2-".... paint it black primer..." Yeah right, I will believe that when I see it. You actually think you can build a car, finish it in primer and be satisfied with the finish. My not think that will ever happen.
Good Luck, and for what it is worth, I vote for the stang.

I think a 1969 Mach I would be hot (yeah I know I'm the biased Mustang guy here) here's what I'd do...

1969 Mustang Mach I G-Machine
- The new 5.0 Liter 4 cam engine (one that's helping the new 2005 Mustang GP cars win all those races)
- 6 speed
- Maybe a Magnuson or Kenne Bell supercharger
- Total Control coil over suspension system

Just my 2 cents again.

Flat Black works for me. The 69 Mustang nose and headlight arrangement really lends itself to some WWII era nose art where the outer headlight recesses could be painted red with "nose-art" painted just behind like this:

I know where there is a pro-touring Original 1968 or 1969 (can't remember) Shelby GT500 is being built right now and is going to try and make SEMA.
Lowered on 18" superchared 347. lots of body modifications like new front and rear spoilers and such.

I couldn't believe it was a real Shelby he was cutting up, but he even has the dash and sun visor signed by Carol himself.

Its getting ready for paint right now.

AWWW hell if your going to do it go all the way with it! I have seen already cut up Shelbys (a 69 was on Ebay not long ago).Pick one up you like and a 03/04 Cobra engine/trans (reliable and capable of BIG HP),Heidits front suspension w/13" rotors and Wilwood 6 pistons, 9" and large Wilwood set up in the back. Keep the outer body (crappy factory looking paint and all) and interior looking as stock/restored as possable with all the goodies where it counts. This is what I would do if $ was no object...................................Feel free to use my idea as long as I get credit for it! :seizure:

63-67 Vette coupe with mini-tubs, nice wheels/brakes, and a magnacharged LS2.
66-67 GTO convertible, mini-tubs, air ride suspension, procharged 455ci LS2
1970 Buick GSX, black with silver striping, twin-turbo LS2
1970 Chevelle convertible
1969 Firebird convertible, black trans am clone with charcoal stripes

Thats exactly what the Owner of the company I work for is doing.
He is making a pro-touring car out of an original Shelby.
I have to admidt I cringed when he said it was an original.
It should hopefully make SEMA.

The way I look at it is....it is nothing but a shell, anything you do with it now is an improvement. Cutting an original restored/unrestored complete car would be a travisty(sic?) but this is not any of that but for a Shelby VIN#................................Any pics of what your boss started with?????

I would cut up any rare car if the engine/tranny/rearend weren't matching #'s. Without those parts being original, anything you do to hotrod them is an improvement anyways.

I started working here after the work started on the car. Its an original Shelby GT500. he isn't a computer guy so the pics he has aren't available for me to download.
What I did see in the pics are:
Shaved doors handles, honda side mirrors, custom front valance with spoiler, shelby letters on the back and front have been recessed so there flush with the body. Rear tail lights have been reworked, Alot of other little things.

I told him to not tell anyone he owns the car if it makes it to SEMA cause there might be a few die hard shelby owners wanting to beat him up for doing that.

SW,

Since you mentioned GTO,

Pontiac GTO for Pontiac T/A deal ?

http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=8ActmrJy5ZMmNe

I am actually a Ford guy too. I have a 68 Shelby convertible now, but agree I would not PT it too much.

IMHO a nasty 69 Mach or Boss 302 would be great, with shaker, 6 speed and FI. There was guy (Flores last name) in TX also I think that had a nasty 69 Boss 302 restomod. I think it was at SEMA a year or so ago and was in PHR if memory serves me correct. Unique (the Eleanor people) supposedly now makes a rear end for Mustangs and several companies have IRS conversion kits. If you want I can get you their names.

There is a 70 Boss 302 Pro-Tourer floating around-was on e-bay last August-Gulfstream Aqua color, lots of sick parts with some Stielow tuning. I went to NH to buy it with trailer, but changed my mind. If that ever particular car crosses your path let me know, I can give you first hand account.

I say go for a Mustang.

Call me crazy, but I like the clean lines of a standard coupe. I used to really be into the '69 Mach 1s, but now they seem a little 'busy'.

A really clean coupe with modern parts, smoked glass, fat meats, etc, would be a lot meaner and understated at the same time, especially for a driver. IMO.
