Wheels, what to do!

So I have 17x8s currently. I want to run drag radials on the rear, but 8" wide wheels aren't going to be wide enough. I have serious traction problems! There are very little wheel choices when it comes to proper back spacing. I found a beautiful set of 18x9s but it is about $2000 to change out all 4 wheels and tires. or I can widen my rear wheels for around $400 (plus $600 for drag radials) so if you have limited funds like me, which way would you guys go?

If the limited funds is a consideration , go the most cost effective route and widen yours .
