View Full Version : 64 A-body (Chevelle) Full Frame Replacement?? Shop recommendations?

Hello all,

Long time reader first post - i searched and read most of the frame tech treads but I did not go through all the build threads since SO MANY EXIST!!

I have a basket case of a 64 chevelle that I am building into a pro-touring type car with the goal of building an all out FUN car.

I am an autocrosser/track junkie first and foremost so I want to make this car the best it can be so I am looking at doing a full frame replacement to optimize handling and overall driving factor.

Purpose of this car:
One lap of America, Goodguys Challenge, Optima Batteries Street Car Shootout type events, Silver state classic (less than 150mph class), time attack, track days, and general fun times. Oh yeah it will be a driver;not daily but I see myself making cross country trips in this thing if I want.

I want to use a C5/C6 Z06 as a drivetrain/suspension donor for this car and want to adopt the IRS vs keeping the stick axle. I already have a SCCA ESP Prepped Camaro so I want to try something different.

I also want to keep the stock style transaxle if at all possible. I want to transfer over the ABS/TC system as well. Other than the frame I am not looking to use exotic parts to make this work that is why I am looking at using a c5 or c6 corvette z06 as the base.

Target tire size is a 315 or 335 width series tire on a 11-12" wide wheel.

To maximize torisonal rigidity I am looking for a perimeter type frame vs an eckerts type X-frame.

Any opinions for perimeter vs X-frame?

Any shop recommendations for one that is designed for a track car vs just a hot-rod/make it all look interesting type frame?

Sorry. I just read your post more carefully. The Schwartz chassis does not use Corvette components, but check it out, you might like it anyway.

There was another company, the name escapes me now, that did make a X-style frame that used all Corvette components including the transaxle. Look on the V8TV site. I think Kevin did a video on it a few years ago.

Schwartz Performance has G-Machine Chassis designs for both A-body generations, which makes them more affordable than one-off builds. The suspension geometry we use is race-car derived with fully serviceable and adjustable components (unlike a Corvette). The main reason we don't use Corvette designs is because we want to out-handle Corvettes, not just be on-par with them—And that's exactly what we've achieved.

We consider our G-Machine Chassis to be the ultimate upgrade for any car and many of our customers feel the same. Our G-Machine Chassis is built for performance AND comfort. You should have no problem driving these cars everyday, even on bumpy country or city streets, and when you're at the track, you'll be able to pull (on average) 1.08Gs in the corners.

The G-Machine Chassis is lighter (125lbs less), stronger (200% less torsional flex) and, of course, much faster than your stock A-body.

We prefer to use a Moser full-floating 9" rear, but if you want IRS, we have no problem integrating a Heidts IRS system. Also, all our chassis allow for 345 rear tires if you mini-tub the rear.

We have a bolt-on A body frame, or you can go all out and use our Max-G chassis to get the COG as low as possible. Our bolt-on is fairly new and I can attest for how much engineering time went in to it.
