A couple of weeks ago I introduced myself and this project on the intro page of the forum and as promised here is the build thread. Please read the initial post to see what I started with and where I am headed with this project. I have two years of work invested in this car which is what I will try to show over the next couple weeks. Later this month I'll be visiting Frank and Mike at Prodigy Customs to see the progress they have made on installing the drivetrain. But for now lets look at what I did prior to turning over the car to them. We'll start the update with pictures of the roll bar which was installated by Sheppard Race cars. After getting the car back from Sheppard I fabricated double shear seat belt mounts and welded them in. I also reinforced the seat mounting points and increased the stud size to 1/2 inch.
5809258093
The first picture shows the extra thick plate used in the ECTA legal roll bar. I thought about a full cage but I didn't want to get into cutting the dash and the HVAC system. The projected speeds for this car don't require a full cage. I understand the safety factors and made what I thought was an educated calculation and went with the roll bar.
5809458095
The floor of the car was great shape. Only a couple spots of surface rust which I ground off and epoxy primed. These photos show where I used spray on bed liner to insulate and protect the metal.
The next step was to pull the old drivetrain. Good help comes in small packages!

Great project - I have a soft spot for 3rd gens! Where'd you get the steel wheels? I've seen a couple cars with them - assume they have the correct offset? What size are they?

Geoff,
The wheels and tires are Cragar Soft 8's with BFG KDWS's. The fronts are 17x8 with 4.5 inches of back spacing with a 255/45/17 tire. The rears are 17x9 with 5.0 inches of back spacing with a 255/50/17 tire.

Eric,
Thanks for checking out the car! Third generation camaros are not really known for their style or performance. I think that's what makes one that has been well done so cool. I hope mine will get a little respect even though its not a popular body style. The LS3,T56, Ford 9inch plus a few other cosmetic changes should make the car standout a little. Things should get a little more interesting once I get a little further into this thread with the paint and suspension.

I miss my 87 Camaro. I will recreate that car down the road as a barely street legal cone killer.

Before taking the car off the road I had installed Jegs sub frame connectors, Eibach springs, AGX adjustable shocks, Edelbrock LCAs and an adjustable Panhard bar so the next step in the evolution of the Bad Carma Camaro was to install the 9 inch Ford rear end which I acquired when the buyer of the old 305 TPI engine told me that he just happened to have a Currie Crate 9 inch Ford for my car that he was looking to sell. The rear end had Drum brakes and 3.70 gears, the price was right and my car had factory rear drums so it bolted in without any problems.

While I worked under the car my oldest son cut out the only cancer on the entire car.

Looking good! I've used Spohn's stuff before - it's nice stuff. One suggestion, make sure you brace that tranny cross member. They have been known to pull the nutserts out of the frame even with a bolt in all three bolt holes.

Geoff,
That's good information. I was already looking into that some because each side of the trans mount only had two of the three nutserts. Also, today is a big day... I'm heading to Florida to see Frank and Mike and hopefully take lots of pictures of progress they have made on the car!

I impressed myself with the paint. It doesn't have any trash in it and polished up really well. Not bad for bargain paint sprayed in a make shift booth in my garage. The paint is Summit brand that has progressively more clear added for each coat. We'll just have to see how well it holds up to the elements.

I was surprised how well the soft 8's looked on the car. When the car comes back from Prodigy Customs it will prabably be wearing Forgelines. I'm not sure which ones yet. ZX3R's look really good so do the Lateral G's. I have looked at some Team III and Vintage Wheel Works minilite's...As the car's stance and body modifications shape up We'll decide which wheels to go with.
Also, I got to visit Frank at the shop last month. He's been busy, lots of projects in his shop. So no new pictures with significant progress just yet. The engine is ready and we got to discuss some design aspects of the car in person. I'm getting excited!!

Hey Gang,
I am finally back home after a little time in the Stan. The honey-do list is now down to a manageable level and I have started back on the Camaro. The car is still in Florida but the nose is hear with me and I have started mocking up the modifications. I have never liked the short angled air damn so I am going to add a little. Brake ducts will be added and I will most likely add a mesh grill similar to the IROC Camaro race cars.

Thanks Buddy, I know 3rd Gens are not the car of choice here but a tastefully modified one still gets appreciated.
OK, so using the plastic intake ducts left me with an issue about what to do about turn signals, being a street car and not wanting to give away the cars performance potential I decided to make fiberglass brake ducts using the plastic ones as molds. These will be glassed in behind the original turn signal pockets. Right now I think I'll use plasma rods tucked into the turn signal pockets as signal and running lights. Hopefully that will look modern without looking gaudy or cheesy and since the turn signal pockets won't be radically reshaped I think the modification will be subtle unless you look close.

Hey guys, a quick update... The Camaro came home from its floundering problems encountered in Florida. It was so disappointing to see the car after two and half years with no progress. The good news it that I got it back and can proceed with some work until I find out what going to happen with the drivetrain. In the mean time the nose is coming along nicely. Lots of sanding and blocking to be done, the extended chin is looking great and the brake ducts that were molded in are coming along.

I used plastic brake ducts from Allstar Performance and molded fiberglass replicas off of them, the fender vents are 3rd gen Firebird items and the 2014 Camaro hood vent just arrived from Pace Performance. Hopefully in the month or so I'll get the hood, nose and the rest of the ground effects in primer. Once I get all that done it will be time to address the drivetrain.

are you sure that extended front spoiler/pseudo splitter wont interfere with the air dam?
also curious to see how you set up the 5th gen vents. i was considerig using them to draw air out from behind an intercooler.
87camaroZ28
02-01-2014, 07:54 AM
I have thought about this issue a lot and I believe that by ducting all of the incoming air from the grill through the aluminum radiator and double fans and by venting out the hot air we'll have enough air flow to keep engine temps in check. I am opening up the bumper support so that the bottom bar isn't in the middle of the incoming air. The IROC Camaros did all right but they had the center removed which helped increase the volume of air available. I am considering this option which could mean that I will have to strengthen the bumper cover enough to run without the center support or build a grill that will tie the top and bottom together and keep the bottom from flexing.

02-01-2014, 10:18 AM
ah.. interesting plan.
you could go another step and lean the radiator forward to make use of those vents with something that resembles the C7 radiator air exit.
what i was going to try to was fit my intercooler in the bumper support and duct air out of a similar vent with the radiator using the air dam.. that i may modify a tad..

Well, it took seven months but the modified fiberglass nose received it's first coats of epoxy primer. The countless hours of pouring fiberglass and block sanding that seemed to never end paid off. The nose looks really nice and strait but it will need some spot putty and another couple coats of primer to be ready for color. I just couldn't wait to get started on the hood....I think the new hood vent will look awesome on a 3rd gen! I just hope the hood doesn't take as long as the nose did to complete.

Still plugging away on the hood and front bumper cover. Here you can see the added length on chin spoiler and my solution for turn signals. LEDs are flush mounted below the headlights which leave the brake ducts smooth.

A recent work schedule change and other family responsibilities have slowed the progress some but the hood got some primer. It looks pretty good but the primer did reveal a few lines that need to be fixed. With the hood being a focal point I want it to be perfect.

Very nice work. Nice to see someone taking a 3rd gen seriously. I've had one but never drove it and wanted countless others lol. It was an 83 Z28 5 speed with a rod hanging out of the 305. Traded it to a friend who fixed it up nice. Both my son and I were wishing we had it back.

OK, well I have not made as much progress as I had hoped but a lot of little things are coming along. The hood vent is ready to go get its carbon fiber hydrodip. The front bumper received another vent and stainless mesh because the oil cooler is going to be mounted in the bumper support. I also been working on the Hawk's tall rear spoiler. I wanted the third brake light in it similar to the factory piece. The LED bar is mounted inside the spoiler and will be covered by a flush mounted dark colored piece of plexiglass. You know you are getting close to the last bits of body and paint work when you are scuffing the underside of the hood and filling the gap where the two pieces have been bonded together.

Can't believe I just now found this thread! Love where the car is headed. I actually have been playing with a brake cooling duct setup using the front t/s housings modified with a 2" tube. I moved the t/s into a custom HID headlight housing in the high beam position. I haven't taken any pics cause I'm not done...
I really love the look of the hood. I had actually been contemplating used two of the 2014 hood grills to mimic the IROC hood grills on a fiberglass flat hood, but yours has me caught up for a loop now. THAT LOOK GREAT!!!

Thanks guys for the kind words! Still moving on things. The hood vent has been shipped out to be dipped and I have been working on the front fenders. Years ago I purchased aftermarket stampings and have tried to get them to line up properly but the door gaps and mounting holes were off a fair bit, I got tired of fighting with them so I located two genuine GM fenders and have been working on getting those prepped. One needed a minor dent repaired and the other need a little rust repair. The bottom of the hood turned out well and as soon as the fenders are done I'll get the front end put together and the Aerocatch latches mounted. Then it will be time to paint it! I'm excited about seeing it put together but there is still lots to do with the mechanicals.

Brandon, I have followed your car for a while. It's clean and has been an inspiration. I looked at using motorcycle LEDs in the headlight housing as well. I thought that since I run clear headlight covers that that would give me a modern and integrated look. In the end I couldn't find anything I truly liked. That's how I ended up with the flush mounted strips that I have now.

You figure out your brake cooling duct routing?
87camaroZ28
08-06-2014, 05:02 PM
Brandon,
Running the hoses seem pretty easy. The ducts in the bumper will accept the 3 inch hose which will route through the bumper support and then go under the radiator support and travel along the sway bar to the yet to be fabbed backing plate that will direct the air to the rotor. I have seen a few pictures of 3rd gen NASA race cars that run brake ducts and it looks like threading the zip ties could be the hardest part.

I got the fenders, mirrors and ground effects painted and am working on the install. Sometimes its the little victories that make you smile. The first spray of the front fenders had more orange peel than I liked so they were sanded down and re-cleared. They will still need to be color sanded to look as good as the quarters. It also took a few hours to get the drivers side mirror back together and working properly. It is remotely operated by cables and I had taken it apart many months ago, piecing it back together so that it worked properly took some patients. I had hoped to get the bumper cover and hood done this weekend but the weather and the additional work on the fenders put me a little behind. This week though. Also a little teaser with the hood vent.

Hey guys,
It's been a while since I had something worthy to post as an update. I had hip replacement surgery in January so things really slowed down. I have reworked the bumper support and the three cooler mounts, I put stainless mesh on the grill area and it has take about three months to fabricate the fiberglass radiator ducting. The duct is one piece and mounts to the top of the radiator support. It also bolts up under the radiator support and attaches to the bumper support. The car will no longer feed air from the bottom. All the air will enter from the grill area and be ducted to the radiator. The piece is pretty stout at about four pounds. I don't know how much air pressure it will see but I think I made it strong enough and with enough mounting points to effectively direct high speed air. The trick was to work around the hood latch and head light bar and other nose bracing while making the duct efficient. In a week or so I'll have made it pretty and will have it mounted along with the coolers and I'll also put the nose back on.

OK, finally some progress that does not have to come back apart. I replaced the thin sheet metal mounting bracket with a thicker aluminum piece, the radiator duct was then painted and installed along with the coolers and the bumper support. The duct was sealed to the radiator support with weather striping. Inside the duct you can see the 9 X 11 oil cooler. Mounted to the bumper support are the transmission and power steering coolers. I might leave the nose off until the engine and transmission are in. Without the nose the cooler lines will be easier to get to and the reach into the engine bay from the front is a lot easier. The factory air cleaner/closeout panel still fits like a glove. It feels really good to have a portion of this project done. Now onto a few of those other things that need to be done....

Thanks HellPhish89!!
Not much has been going on with the this project lately. Braces for the youngest child and a new roof on the house has taken all the extra funds and most of my extra time. What little time and money that has been available went into the final fitting of the nose piece as well as the access panel on the bottom. I also completed the adjustable (for height) rear spoiler extension. The spoiler extension is made of aluminum and plexiglass. It bolts down in an low position and won't be seen from the rear. If more down force is needed the extension can be raise two inches. Once the nose and rear spoiler are painted and attached it will be onto those brakes and the engine and trans.

HellPhish,
I love the look of GT cars and thought about going that direction at one time so a true wing on the back could look and function really well.
I won't be doing a belly pan.... Unless I get to competing a lot and need some additional performance. I lowered the front spoiler and extended the nose and sealed it off to the radiator support in an attempt to reduce the air going under the car and hopefully smoothing the flow under the car.

i think at least sealing off the engine bay with the hood set up youre using will work in your favor in more ways than track days.
Im going to a front breather because i want to isolate the engine bay from airflow that isnt the radiator/intercooler. i will be going the same route as you for the hood and depending on the temps i see, i may add 2 other smaller vents on either side of the main one. plus.. going lower wont be as much of an issue among other things. wish i had access to some CFD software >_>

Greg that is a great looking car yo have built. It is great to see another 3rd gen build here. I too am building a 3rd gen for track day use and the work you have done on the hood and front bumper answered a lot of my questions of how it would look with those types of mods.
Like you i have been at it since 2010 and life gets in the way of our fun that is for sure. Since all of the comments say how much they like the 3rd gens and want to see more I guess I will post my build here as well. It has been on TGO since the beginning but the readers on PT might like it better since it is a track day car with a lot of suspension mods.

It has been on TGO since the beginning but the readers on PT might like it better since it is a track day car with a lot of suspension mods.
Keep up the good work as I will be looking to steal some more ideas.
Dave
Post it up!! I'm sure us 3rd gen'rs would love to see it!

Hey Gang,
It's been a while and there really hasn't been a lot of progress to speak of. However, the project is not dead!! I fixed the rear hatch pull down and since I have an increasing number of artificial joints to go along with several pins and screws I decided to make the drivers side door bar swing out.
In December I competed in my first autocross and took second in class with my 27 year old all stock Red IROC. It was a blast!!! I can hardly wait to get Badcarma out there!

I love the car. The paint turned out great !!! You are real lucky to have kids who want to help and at least appear like they care about cars. Neither of my daughters nor grandson could care less about working on cool cars.
Keep up the great work !!!

Thanks guys,
The children have developed their own interest and if I have a two man job I have to recruit some help! Not much to update with. Started working on the headlight covers and I found some flush mount driving lights that might find their way into the front bumper cover. Been working on some things with the engine and trans...really want this thing running soon.

It's been a really long time since I had some progress on this project. Life just took priority and there were times where I almost threw in the towel. However, with a lot of patients and perseverance I have managed to resurrect this project. I found a great deal on an 6.0 liter LQ4. I have the engine swap mounts, oil pan and improved racing baffles and oil cooler adaptor. Texas Speed provided the cam and PRC heads. Hawks Motorsports sold me a close ratio T56 Magnum swap kit and six piston, 14 inch Baer Brakes. I also have been measuring for the 18 inch weld wheels and 275/295 Nitto tires. Set the 295 next to the stock 245/50/16 thats on the red car. That's a lot of tire! :headbang:

The front brake kit arrived. I have torn down and honed the block. I have the new rings and bearings but it will have to go to the machine shop to have the cam bearings installed. I also started looking at the computer and harness from the donor vehicle. 146084146085

The short block is done. New rings and bearings installed along with the new stuff from Texas Speed and Performance. I modified the stock windage tray, installed the Improved Racing trap door baffle in the new Holley oil pan along with the oil cooler adaptor. Waiting on top end parts so the heads can be installed.

Just spent about 1/2 hr or so checking this thread out. Lots of cool stuff going on here. Always had a soft spot for a nice 3rd gen.
This is definitely a real life build, these things take time & life always seems to get in the way. I cut tendons on my arm aug 2016 & started getting what turned out to be a hernia in aug 2017 among other things ( house & yard work & costs , etc), so I know how discouraging it can be to not make progress & see your project just sit there. Gotta think of it as your 1 little look forward to thing that you have & no one else does.
On paint, the summit stuff I,ve heard is pretty comparable to the Nason stuff I've used on a few parts of mine. It can be sanded & buffed to where you can't hardly tell the difference between it & a higher grade of clear when clean, but it definitely doesn't weather as well. One future option you have here is once everything else is all done & completed, if everything previously done looks all intact with no bubbles or other bad spots, light block sand it all down & do any needed touch ups with your paint. Then spray a few coats of a better clear on top. New clear can stick to old prepped clear this will give you the double dipped effect when done. I'm on the SPI paints forum & unless you have a local distributor, you can buy direct from them in Blairesville, Ga. Their universal clear has been on many concours restorations.
Again, interesting build. Do have 1 little question for you or anyone else reading. Do you know if 82 to 82 f-body fenders are 20 gauge metal?? I may get a few of em to use for the upper section on my el camino bedsides when I can get myself time to get back to my in progress sheet metal mods pictured in flicker link.

JLcustoms,
Thanks for the kind words.
I put lots of clear in the paint and it looked really good at one point. I'm hoping that a few days worth of polishing will bring it around. Putting a fresh coat of clear on it could be an option as well but I'll drive it ugly if I have to. I'm getting close to seeing it run which is far more important than looks. I couldn't tell you the gauge of the sheet metal.

I'd say that is a huge update! going from no drivetrain to a built 6.0 and 6 speed! That should be a beast on the track now!

Big Thanks to Keith at Lankford Performance. We put in a lot of work over the weekend and installed the 4th gen pedal assembly, the 6.0 and the T56 Magnum. Still lots of work to do and even though the car is dirty from sitting outside she looks awesome with the drivetrain weight back on the suspension.152578152577152576152575152574152573

So things are moving along again. I have taken out most of the interior and repainted the roll bar. I have also been to the local pick-a-part and secured some things that I need for mock up or to actually get this thing running. Oh, and I have given her a couple baths.

So I have decided that a little help is needed. I'll take forever to figure out the electronics of this LS swap! I'm calling in some professional help. Hawks Motorsports has agreed to help!169506169507[/ATTACH[ATTACH=CONFIG]169504
