Is there a stipulation for the mass air to have a straight run before and after the MAF for air turbulance reasons? Wondering will be ok to put the MAF at the end of the intake tube and mount my air filter on the mass air?

That is how ford did it on my truck (2003 F150), MAF with filter mounted directly to it. I do think you want at lease a short straight run before and after to reduce turbulance.

The biggest issue is putting it too close to the TB. At part throttle the flow is uneven near the TB with the blade open at top and bottom.
Most stock installation put the cylindrical MAF at the filter end. The "waffer" type needs to go in a strat run.

After doing a bunch of surfing on this I found a lot of people putting a conical filter on the end of the MAF. The biggest issues come up when there is a bend right before the MAF. However I went ahead and cut my tubing up last night and now have a 5" straight run before the MAF, then the 90 degree bend before the TB.

As far as being to close to the TB that issue seemed to be worse on forced induction vehicles due to the backdraft surge of air when the TB closes during deceleration causing a temporary lean condition.... that's just what I read anyway.

Thanks for the input!

I run a Screenless LT1 MAF (3") inside of modified Stock airbox on my '86 GN and '86 T-type for that stock, sleeper look.

A cone K&N or similar filter does a reasonable job of straightening the flow going into the MAF and on a GN, there is a 90 Degree Elbow right after my MAF that doesn't seem to hurt driveability or performance.

Best ET with this set up with a tiny 6.5" K&N was an 11.53@118 mph on BFGDR's through a 100% stock longblock.

The Plastic factory MAF is a hollow tube. Inside the metal airbox, right before the elbow is a LT1 MAF.
