View Full Version : Odd car you want to build

I know that some people have ideas for odd/off the wall cars they want to build. What are some of your ideas?
I want to build an 80s to early 90s S10 regular cab short box, 2wd and swap in a supercharged 3800 and a T5. I have always thought it would be fun, could be made fast, get decent mileage, run FOREVER with the 3800. Another thing I have thought is even with a nice exhaust it will sound horrible so I wouldn't have to hide V8 rumble making it a killer sleeper.

I have way too many ideas for cars I would like to build (but cannot afford to do). But here are a few.
89-97 TBird with engine swap, probably LS or BBC
99 Bonneville (current daily driver) with CTS-V driveline
79 GMC pickup (also own) with oddball Diesel, something like a 4-53T
Odd small car with V6/V8 RWD conversion, maybe turbo/supercharged as well

I'd like to build a crazy but subtle '63 Oldsmobile F-85. I almost bought one a few year ago. I like those cars.

I want a 73-87 4wd suburban with the rear roof cut off, roll up back window and the rear axle moved back with the bed reworked to make it flow a little better. For a power plant I would want a Cummins swap. Would make a nice towing vehicle.

See my sig rendering below. My wagon's nose looks just a little bit like a 1st gen Olds Bravada.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/04/1991Bravada3-1.jpg
I've been thinking how cool would it be to build an 8 lug converted, crew cab, long bed, S10 dually with a Bravada grill and late model 4.8 Vortec motor. I wouldn't want it on the ground but low enough for good looks, and paint it to match my wagon. That would be cool. A bit of inspiration...

I have been spending a lot of time looking online for 'that next project' that will be about 7-10 years out. I think one day I'd like to build a 1964 Thunderbird into a PT car. No, probably wouldn't be competitive; No, probably wouldn't be inexpensive; No, probably wouldn't be easy. But darn what a cool looking 2 door that almost no one builds.

Early bug would be cool like someone mentioned. My dad traded his 67 chevelle SS in for a super beatle in the 70's.lol.
My dad had a datsun 510 when I was a kid and have always wanted to build one of those. Even way back then they came stock with 4 wheel disc and independent rear suspension and super light. Turbo 4 cylinder motor with coil overs and sticky tires and that little sucker would fly around autocross
Corvair would be cool but I have seen a few of those done with v8 conversions. But not full pro-tour.
Early celicas and Z's are cool too. Both my parents had when I was a kid too. I guess I'm seeing a theme with what cars I like. My step-dad had a SS chevelle too and traded it in on a 280z.lol.
Let's think fun driving, people: '55-'66 VW Bug with Subaru STI motor. Light weight and lots of horses equate to the ultimate sleeper. As far as flat turning goes, the original suspension doesn't need much to kill at an autocross...
See I think it would be awesome to go the oposite route, take a old Subaru Brat or a newer Outback wagon and throw a monster V8 into it. People look at me funny when I say it but I think it would be fun.

Buick V8 only weighs 20 lbs more than the stock Vega aluminum block/iron head 4-cylinder but it has a much lower center of gravity. Battery relocation negates that weight gain.

I also think a 70ish Dart with a 440 6 pack and a 4 speed would be ALOT of fun, just black, black rally wheels(if that what Mopar called them, Im a GM guy) with little dog dish hub caps, no radio, bench seat and have "TYRFRYR" on the plates.
Maybe a Nash Metropolitan with an LSx swap too, I have to many ideas and not enough money.

I have a few "out there" ideas I'd love to build one day. In no order...
1975 Pontiac Astre. (gotta keep it CA smog exempt) would be cool to get an older Canadian front end. LS drivetrain
early 80's Omni O24, or mid 80's "Shelby GLH/ GLHS" . Either Neon SRT4 drivetrain or make it AWD.
Nash Metropolitan. make it electric. I'd call it the "electropolitan"
Willys Jeep J10, or even the older "Overland" models. Make it an extended cab, throw a late model truck chassis/ drivetrain

The odd car I'd like to build is the one sitting in my garage now. Dodge Aspen on a Laughlin truck arm stock car chassis with GenIII Hemi for power. The inspiration for the car are the Chrysler Kit Car short track stock cars from the late 70's. Still in the parts collection mode.

Well doing the H body, gonna run a 61 283, forged bottom end, double humps all the tricks,2.02/1.60, big springs ,screw in studs, guide plates.
Ill run Comp 268h or similar, plan is LT1 fi intake, my own custom dis, twin eBay GT2871R turbos.
Still debating trans, either tci th350 or possibly th700r4.
Had 4wd rearend but was stolen. Still want later zr1.
Several places make tubular control arms, I have plans to build cross member to add in upper arms for 4 link, have to do away with torque arm to make room for exhaust.
Still working and debating on other plans.
Still planning for Ridetech coilovers, had planned for air ride but I think it might be a bit hard to fit shockwaves in front, had even debated mixing air in back and coil over in front.
My plans are fluid except for twin turbo plans, and making it turn hard.
I also still have plans to my 66 Caprice 4dr.

My oddball project that I will be building, once I get room, is a 58 Edsel Roadster. I have a nice solid 2 door hardtop, but it's not very complete as far as electrical, and interior. Gonna brace the frame, and chop the roof off! Already have a friend with a convertible windshield post. I'll probably do a Crown Vic front clip, rear 4 link, and bags, with either the 4.6 out of the Vic, or pony up for a Coyote 5.0. The interior will be all custom, 4 buckets, basically just flowing tan/brown leather, custom dash that flows through the console, to a waterfall up the rear package shelf. Going to do some body mods to clean up the front end and grille area. This will be more of a show build, just to see what I am capable of fabricating body/appearance-wise, but I'd like to throw it around some corners, and be the first ever autocrossing Edsel.
Yes I'm sick, no I'm not on meds.

Since I don't have an actual Pro-Touring car right now, but lurk here often I thought I would post the projects I have planned:
1. Project Big and Heavy - 1972 Gran Torino -free and waiting to be built, Vette suspension and either an LS or Turbo and EFI the 400 with a T56
2. Project Aztack - Pontiac Aztek: one of the ugliest cars ever built so I want to make one cool and haul the kids to school, section the body, full tube frame, maybe z06 transaxle, custom body kit, tubo'd LS
3. Super Budget Crazy Oddball Build - Renault Gordini with a 2.3l Turbo Ford, Mustang 2 front Suspension, full cage, custom fenders and probably 17" or 18" mustang wheels - the Fordini
4. My First Car Build - 1978 Bronco: add F-150 2wd front frame, Crown Vic front suspension, Cobra IRS, coyote engine and five or six speed. It would be fun to see what a brick would do on a road course!
Until then I need to build the garage expansion and start grabbing the cars from their derelict locations

I'd like to build a crazy but subtle '63 Oldsmobile F-85. I almost bought one a few year ago. I like those cars.
I'm with you, early to mid 60's compact. Brand wouldn't really matter, I'm thinking it would need full front and rear suspension, drivetrain swap, as well as mini tub. Finding donor front suspension that would handle well and be narrow enough would be the trick.

Kevin,
That Riviera is gorgeous. What's the wheelbase? It looks like it was based on the same chassis as the Grand Prix, which was basically a stretched a-body, but they called it a g-body, and it had a 118 inch wheelbase.

Thanks Andrew!
It would be sweet if the Riv was even close to an A or G body, but it lives on a full-size "x" frame chassis and shares some B body parts. It's cousins are the Toronado and Eldorado, which are both front-drive. The Buick engineers didn't want a front-driver, so the Riv is its own platform. It's got reaction rods in the front suspension, and a 3-link / panhard bar in the back. The lower rear arms are basically A body pieces, but that's the only thing it shares.

Mine has rear end from 70 B'ville, but center limited slip from 66 GP B.O.P. related. But the axles on these are huge! Near got to compare to my old 70 MC 10 bolt.

I posted in this thread back in '12 about building a '73 Vega Kammback (station wagon) with a Buick all-aluminum 215 cubic inch V8, 4th gen Camaro brakes and some suspension mods. That project stalled due to fabrication needs and general lack of interest.
Bought this '72 Kammback with a '62 Olds 215 aluminum V8.
Currently has an automatic with lock up converter (soon to be a Monza T-50 5-speed--- Not a T-5)
Chevy Monza 3-link rear end with torque arm and panhard bar.... 2.56 geared L.S.D.
121393
LSD works:
121394
Custom Autometer Sport Comp gauges
121395
215 firebreathing cubic inches.... lol... 180 HP
121396
215 cubic inch ALUMINUM V8. 10.5:1 compression. Isky 282 hydraulic cam. Buick 300 exhaust manifolds. 2.5" single exhaust with glass pack muffler. Idling at 600 rpm.
https://youtu.be/9BmrGiWKGlE
Shifting through the gears .... no kickdown cable installed..... shifts at 3k rpm regardless of throttle position upon acceleration.
https://youtu.be/0EgUDF6GCRU
Not really gonna "Pro-Tour" it much.... but it will hit an autocross once or twice this coming season.
Definitely getting the Monza 5-speed (0.80 OD). I may eventually put the 3rd gen F-body T-5 in (for better OD ratio of 0.63) in front of the 3.42 LSD I have lying around..... then the 4th gen Camaro Brakes on it, as well as the 16" IROC wheels from the other Kammback project that stalled. Maybe even retro-fit some original stock Vega GT gauges, too. Mostly stock appearing except for modern wheel sizes (can't find 13" performance tires very easily).
Somewhat of a sleeper, if I can quieten it down some.

We're toying with putting a Tesla or other electric setup in a '69 Camaro. Now that the power output from those designs is respectable (read: stupid fast at short ranges) it seems like it might be the next fun thing to do, even if it's only a one-off. Lord knows, we've crammed everything else into these cars, so why not this too? What do you think?
