I don’t really want to put a traditional head unit in my car and I have read the iPod sticky at the top of the forum but am looking to extend that further. What I would like to have is a Bluetooth capable sound system (less radio, CD player, etc and space on my dash) and an in-dash 7-10” sunlight readable LCD with my Android phone’s interface displayed via HDMI. Bonus points if you can make the LCD a touch screen and have it control my phone. That gets me all of my music, Pandora and GPS. None of the car functions need to be displayed or controlled but if the display had multiple inputs it could be added down the road.

Is this possible yet within a reasonable (however you define it) budget?

The aftermarket has a slim selection of android-powered head units, none that I've heard about where you can attach your android phone via HDMI to get the interface and touch capabilities from your apps. However, car audio pioneers have realized that using a smart phone to power car audio, navigation, and get your text messages is the next big wave. "Aha radio" has partnered with Subaru and working on exactly what you've asked for.

You can't get the touch to work, there are no drivers for Android for an external touchscreen that I know of. If you want to use your phone, get a car mount (suction cup on windshield) and run a 3.5mm to audio in/out (forget the wire name, the white/red one) and run that from the phone to an amp. About the best way I can figure to do it.

This is kinda what I was thinking. I have an archos 7" tablet that I have been thinking about doing this with.

I would like to use this stereo http://www.oxygenaudio.com/ hidden somewhere with an ipod extension cable up through the console. The extension cable is basically a female representation of the iphones bottom port extended to a standard connector you would plug into your iphone. They have an ipod application that then controls the radio, presets, volume etc. I have emailed them to ask if this is possible, I do not see why not though.

You could consider this set-up. It will be shipping in the summer and has android OS on it. You can install the 7" LCD display and BT anything you want into it. The unit supports wifi,3G,radar detection, laser jamming,TPMS, internet browser, back up camera,a/v inputs and outputs.
For the record I'm an enthusiasts and also part owner in this company. We've designed it for aftermarket head units but a majority of our business is in new cars at the dealership level. These can be used in several different screen sizes as well. Any questions, you're welcome to contact me. 303-328-5216

I had looked into this and I don't believe you can use a tablet to do very much as far as making or receiving calls, essentially using it as a bluetooth headset. I did come across this one product that lets you integrate an external touchscreen to an android phone or iphone. if you track down a sunlight readable lcd this mightbe what you're looking for. have to plug the phone in though. i believe it uses bluetooth to control the external digitizer.
if you can set up your phone to launch a car dashboard when you plug it in it just might do what you want.

Yup, that is getting pretty darn close to what I want as it keeps most of the intelligence in the phone.

Here is the Android version: http://www.customgadz.com/store/product.php?id_product=16

Thank you!

I just got a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. It has a gorgeous 7" screen and HDMI output. The company taht makes the iStreamer is working on another high quality DAC for HDMI input. Once that device is out, I will be able to use the PlayBook as a music source.
