View Full Version : How I justified switching to EFI. Agree or disagree?

Just pulled the trigger on Holley's Dominator EFI setup. I had this monster parts list. Total was right around $5500. For that I got a DIS crank trigger kit with coils, 16 injectors (66lbs. primaries, 120lbs. secondaries), all the different harnesses and sensors, map selector, two of the huge 1800 fuel pumps with pre/post filters, 2 NTK WB02's, etc...
This would be replacing carb, ignition box and accessories and RacePak. Figure $3600 or so. Fuel pumps/filters wash for both setups, so deduct $1100. FI now $4400. WB 02's wash (need for carb tuning), so deduct $400. FI now $3900. So, for $300 I switched to EFI and gained a ton of tuning/drivability. That's how I laid it out to the wife, and the numbers make sense. The manifold conversion is the only "outstanding" cost.
Wish I had done the numbers sooner!

I bought an 84 325e and an 88 325is for less than that. I'd probably just stick with a carb or go LS for that price.

What he said. Junkyard 6.0 LS (complete) are like $1500ish.
My 944t costs less than that as well, since we're doing comparisons. :)

I think you guys are missing my point. This is for an engine management system for my Mopar, not what you can buy for that price, be it a Chevy, BMW, Porsche, or 30 Yugo's.

In my own defense, you didn't explicitly state you have a Mopar.

No problem. You Chevy guys can buy parts at 7-11. If I can find it, I know I'll pay twice as much as a comparable Chevy part.
Just wanted to let the "off brand" guys have a measuring stick for EFI vs. carb price.
On the flip side, I'm putting a 390HP Hemi drivetrain in my '37 truck (avatar pic). Your LS stuff is once again half as much, but I bought the entire truck (wrecked 2011) for considerably less than I'm paying for the Holley stuff.

Ah, I didn't know you had a Mopar either.
My bad.

I did the same. Holley HP. Build thread HERE (http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/project-cars/1968-chevrolet-camaro/) Had a really nice working, custom-built carburetor. But after moving from NY to FL, I learned that engines don't like to run on water. So I'm blaming the weather.:dunno:

Oh yeah! Biggest decision was sorting out the fuel tank for my custom application. Instead of simply turning on my brain, I tapped II Much Fabrication and VaporWorx.

Got a gut in out area that has a 440 that has a procharger on it and megasquirt efi that he did for under $1000 just for the efi setup and he really likes it and it's easy ability to tune. Don't know what he is making for power but it sounds real healthy.

I am in the process of making a switch to Holley HP from a blow through carb. Money aside tuning the blow through was amjor headache and was never 100% correct for driving. I sold all of my stuff and made half my money back. Even though my is a Chevy, I looked at going with a 6.0 but buy the time I changed headers, charge piping, not considering all my pulleys and everything I have invested in the sbc, it was mucheasier and cheaper to go with the holley hp setup. I chose to to go with a victor intake. By the way I have a new set of injector bungs and universal rails that came with my Holey HP setup that i will sell cheap. They are brand new if you need them for your conversion.

IMO you don't need too many reasons to go carb'd. I'm hopefully gonna do it sometime this year. Carbs suck.

We do all of this stuff for fun anyway, but EFI gives so much more control than a carb and distributor.

I'm sort at a crossroads... carb'd SBC.. and have been looking at the holley EFI or going carb'd LSx... I'm leaning toward the the carb'd LSx. I hear even those knock down 20mpg hwy.

If I was going lsx, it would be a no-brainer for me to stay efi.

I have the FAST EZ Multiport for my Pontiac and it works well. Better than screwing with carbs.

All of you carb to EFI guys, what did you do, inline fuel pump?

If the fuel tank is deep enough, needs to be 9 inches deep.
I am using a 4th gen fuel pump module.
