Hi all. New here from Qld Australia. The forum was bought to my attention by Bahaimus who owns the V12 Merc 190E. I am doing the work on it. https://www.pro-touring.com/showthread.php?88225-Project-Indecision-Mercedes-190E-Toyota-V12-T56-GT4088R-Turbo

This is my personal project that has been going on and off for 3 years.

I bought it off ebay as a deceased estate. Looked pretty good, still ran and drove.

As purchased.

I pulled the original driveline and fitted an Aristo 2JZ and auto.

Made up a manifold for the ex Scania GT4082 with .99 GT37 exhaust housing.

Mounted an S15 alloy radiator with WRX thermo fans and 600x300x100 intercooler with custom outlets.

Fabbed a 3" exhaust.

Fitted a hurst promatic shifter to control the rebuilt, shift kitted and 3500 stalled A341 auto.

Other things to mention are a change to boosted MS112 4 wheel discs and autometer guages in the dash.

Brake conversion.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/crownconversion009-1.jpg

Legacy auto pedal wide pedal pad. Does this look factory std?

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/crownconversion080-1.jpg

Underfloor trans cooler and spin on filter.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/crownconversion150-1.jpg

The spin on auto filter from a legacy.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/Cownconversion004-1.jpg

Custom made output shaft flange. The factory Aristo tripod joint didn't fit in the space so I had it modified into a conventional style flange. The tailshaft is all spicer parts with a truck style slip joint in the shaft.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/crownconversion129-1.jpg

Hurst shifter bracket. I recommend using hurst over B&M on toyota boxes as the Park gate is not a problem like it is on B&M.

A year or so passed and I bought another car for spares. The other crown is donating all it's jap good bits like interior, heating and ventilation(completely different for some reason) and brightwork(lots more of it).

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/IMG_1052-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/IMG_1053-1.jpg

My panel beater has already done the hanging panels at his workplace and will bring all his gear to my shed to do the main body next week.

This panel needs to be cut off and welded onto the floor of the other car to mount the bucket seats. It's incredibly flimsy so I will stiffen it up as well.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/IMG_1054-1.jpg

Other changes I am making is to soundproof the eyeballs out of it, add airconditioning, retractable seatbelts, collapsible steering column and use the column shifter instead of the hurst. To fit A/C I will have to change to a smaller 280x600x75 intercooler and lose power steering.

Been going hard on the body resto on this, my panel beater will be buying a new yacht by the end of it.

Started by stripping the paint off. And the bog, there was lots in the rear guards.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/IMG_3133-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/IMG_3148-1.jpg

RH rear wheel arch had copped a big hit and was filled with bog so we cut the arch from my spare car, picked out the damaged one and welded the spare in.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/IMG_1107-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/IMG_3147-1.jpg

We file finished the roof, long process but effective. File down to reveal low points, tap up low points, file down, repeat.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/IMG_3153-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/IMG_3155-1.jpg

Guards were pulled out with a spotwelder/slide hammer device then shrunk back and finished with filler. Not a lot of bog but necessary, they really were a mess.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/IMG_3145-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/IMG_3146-1.jpg

All in primer.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/IMG_3157-1.jpg

The hanging panels had all been done a few weeks ago.

Helpers.

Also pulled the fuel tank and converted it to intank pump to simplify the fuel system. I got a WRX tank and cut the pump bracket flange out of it, then cut the swirl pot out of the bottom of the tank.
I then cut a reasonably large hole in the crown tank to allow the swirl pot to go it. Once positioned I spotted it to the bottom of the tank then welded the cut out back in minus the section where the pump flange goes. Welded it all back together, fit a walbro to a shortened 2wd pump bracket and we are away.

Crown has been out of sight/out of mind at the paint shop for a month or so until panel guy rang me yesterday and demanded the engine be refitted so he could continue the reassembly and onto painting. The engine bay and jambs/inner doors/inner bootlid have all been painted.

Trusty tow truck driver bought it over post haste.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/IMG_3221-1.jpg

Face came down today and leant a hand reassembling parts of the engine bay, making brake pipes, making wastegate outlet pipes and refitting engine and gearbox.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/IMG_3223-1.jpg

Looks to be pretty straight, panel guy is happy and he is a fussy mofo so should be good.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/IMG_3224-1.jpg

Front panels back on.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/IMG_1553-1.jpg

A bit better idea of the colour. Looks a little green for some reason, maybe the ****ty light on a rainy day.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/IMG_1554-1.jpg

Rubbed back with 240. One more rub with 400 and it's in the booth(next weekend if weather is good).

Paint is looking good for this weekend if the weather stays nice.

OOOOOOOOOOhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Mama.

The fumes were so bad in the booth after the clear went on I took this pic to demonstrate what I was seeing.(had a large rag over my mouth and nose at the time)

So that's where I am atm. Have been too busy jamming turbo V12's into various cars to start reassembly. As soon as I get the TT V12 Legacy sedan out of the home shed I can start on piecing it back together.

I really like the project. I used to work for Toyota Racing Development, so it's cool to see you putting the 2JZ into such an alternative Toyota. We don't see too many Crowns in the states anymore...even here in sunny California. I'll be sure to follow along as it progresses. Are you planning to do any frame or body stiffening? How much boost are you planning for?

03-31-2012, 01:28 PM
Nice build how much power are you shooting for

jzk25
03-31-2012, 06:26 PM
I'm not really chasing big power in it, just whatever the injectors will get me(usually 380-400hp atw on Aus dynos). Now that the body has had so much put into it I more want to make it a nice tourer to go to shows and events in.

The exterior and interior will be 100% std right down to the original radio and column shifter, only the underbonnet will be non original.

I think its time to bring this back from the dead. Whatever happened to this car?

Wow. 5 years and my first post is bringing a 3 year old thread back from the dead...never thought I would be that guy.
