Only modification to the G body for this chassis is the trunk area. The spare tire well needs to be removed and the gas tank center under the rear of the car. Schwartz will provide these pieces.
We applied U-Pol Rpator bedliner to the bottom of the car.

Block sanding has been started on the body and should be painted by weeks end.
I should receive a radiator form a company that is coming out with a new line for G-bodies. This SS will be used in their marketing. I will provide more info and many photos when i get it. This is a drop in unit, spal fans, catch can, and harness. Tranny cooler has quick connect fittings. More to come.

If you go to www.schwartzperformance.com (http://www.schwartzperformance.com) you can price one out with your options. Not cheap but by the time I added the brakes, suspension, 9" rearend, knotch and box frame, it didn't measure up to this for not alot more $$$. Also this is 125 lbs lighter than stock and 200% stiffer, allows up to 14 wide rear rubber, and has been proven by Schwartz.

Weldcraft was great to work with. When I called to ship them, I was told they were back logged and turn aound time was 5-6 weeks. Received them back in little over 4. Price was $225 per wheel but that varies by your order. www.weldcraftwheels.com

Very nice, I used to have an 87 SS as my DD. Unfortunately between gas prices at $4.50 at the time, and that it was only getting around 15 mpg on the highway. I had to get rid of it because I couldn't support it on my college budget.

Great build. After beefing up my chassis several folks asked what I thought about the Schwartz frame. Will you be beating on the car at events? I'm really curious how the new frame's benefits weighs against a factory based frame build on the track.
Either way it's plain gorgeous. Your son is doing a great job. Love (and covet) your wheels. Looking forward to more updates!

This will be a driver and autocrossed as much as I can. Hoping to have it completed for SuperChevy in St. Louis. Then Goodguys Des Moines on Sunday. It WILL be at CarCraft in St Paul in July, that has been the plan since CarCraft last year when this chassis deal started. LS Fest is also on the calender. Family has great friends near Bowling Green and they are looking forward to the weekend.
I have all the major components to finish, all I need is the car painted and the time for assembly. I'm self employed and busy as all get out every spring, but with a few hours each evening I think it will come together.

Looks awesome! I watched that chassis get built at the shop. When Jeff first started doing the full frames for the 1st gen Camaro, I told him he needed to make a G body one to help out all the rust belt guys. The 'metric' chassis is really popular around here. Only took Jeff 4 yrs to finally get around to it! I guess he was waiting for the first customer to really commit to buying one.
My guess is, this car will set the bar high and really help promote the G body line.
Can't wait to see what it looks like with the wheels on.

The frame is designed for wheels up to 14" wide. The tubs will need modifying to accept the width. That said you can make the tub fit your wheel choice.

Dewitt radiators sent me their 2nd radiator for a G-body today. They are known for Corvette and Tri-five rads and are expanding their product line. This piece is a by-pass unit for an LS conversion, trans cooler with factory disconnects, and dual spal fans. It comes fully assembled and drops right in. I purchased a Cutlas top plate which Josh has so he can spray it with the Emron paint to match the core support
Jeff Schwartz got me in contact with them after a rep called him looking for a G-Body to promote this unit for Dewitt. Wanted a high profile car that would get driven. This car fit the bill. Just another reason for Schwartz Performance to build your chassis. They continue to help me out on many ways and i cannot thank them enough.

Got home and mocked up a rear tire so I could order wheel spacers. The hub on the wheel also will be machined from its current 1 1/2" to 2" to clear the hat on the Moser 9". A local shop will do this once I have the spacees. The pictures show the tire 1/2" out from where it needs to be. This will allow 3/8" clearance to the fender lip. Car is being held up by a jack in the pictures so the ride height is not correct. I could not install the lugs due to the hub interference.

Installed the LS1 today to get measurements for front drive system. Going with the GMPP system for the CTS-V. 2" of clearance for the low mount AC compressor and plenty of clearance for the power steering pump reservoir. Removed the engine, tranny is being beef up and cam still needs to be installed.
I've been concerned about header clearance and the steering shaft. There is 3-3 1/2" along the shaft. Anybody know if G-body LS headers will clear?
Also started the Be Quiet sound control. I need to do some work on the way the shifter location before I can finish

These have a dual pattern, including 5x4 3/4. No adapter required. I don't know if all the XXR wheels are this way. They are very limited on backspacing. I needed 1" spacer for the rear and have to machine the hub out to 2" to fit the moser 9".

Very cool. I like the mod on the seat frame, I dig it when you can make the interior work around the mods. I like the white too. It's refreshing to see something other than black, and it should look smooth and "svelte" (best word I could come up with to describe what I envision) with that shade of blue. Keep it coming!

A/C box wiil remain. I would love to remove it and go with vintage air but not now. May paint it black so it matches a littlle better. Inner fenders will also be blue. I had a local blaster distroy the originals removing Z-Bart rust proofer. Soda wouldn't do it so he switched to sand. Warped them beyond repair so he paid for new.

Coming along nice Dan. From my point of view looks like your best option is to have some tight tubes shoot forward. And since you're doing that, just as well slap a couple turbines on the ends of 'em. Yep, that'll solve about 95% of the problem right there. The other 5% is trying to get traction with your current rear tire choice, lol!
Seriously though, what did Schwartz suggest? What are the Shwartz chassied A and F body cars using? Maybe custom built is the best way to go(?), looks real tight in there. Might be a fun adventure to make your own if you can tig weld. Either way, good luck, I'm sure you'll have it worked out in no time.

Schwartz normally makes their own although they said some have used aftermarket. They are finishing up an El Camino LS swap and used some shorty style but are are 1 5/8 tubes. I prefer 1 3/4 and long tubes. Eleven with those Dale wasn't sure if they would clear the shaft. Edelbrock A body were brought up in conversation. This's has been my biggest worry since I got the car back. Think I'll try some pacesetter f body and go from there.

No modification was required for the fronts. Front and rear offset is +25. There are no other options. The best price I found with shipping was www.sonicmotor.com. Make sure you check that they will fit in the front on a stock chassis, I have no idea. You will aslo need the small diameter lug nuts.

Mounted the controler for the EFI and tranny under the glove box. The harness will tuck under the dash and into the kick panel that did house the original PCM.

I'm running an 18x8.5 with a +15 offset and would prefer a little less, +25 for a stock frame would probably be too much. Not sure if you can even find it by I think perfect front wheel offset on a G-body stock frame is probably 0 with a 8.5 wide wheel (4.25 backspacing). Oh and I'm not running inner fenders so can't comment on those.

I got the rear wheels back from the machine shop after they opened the hub up to 2" from the factory1.5". Pictures don't do it justice, but the look is over the top. It's easy to fit 335/30/18 with a Schwartz gbody chassis.

Finish modifying the filler neck on the fuel tank. This is one of two mods that needs to be done for the Schwartz chassis. The other is the removal of the spare tire well. Schwartz will suply the needed pieces.
I choose to do the filler neck a liitle different than their design since I started with a new tank and filler neck that allowed welding and cutting. Monday i'll get it sweated to the tank.
Jon from GSI interiors has shipped the door panels and rear seat cover. With that and the engine returning this week, the Wife and Daughter leaving for Georgia on Friday, Josh and I should make alot of progress next weekend.

Using the cooler in the radiator for now and will see what this does. If it proves inadequate, we'll come up with plan B. Running hard lines to the core support then adapting to the disconnects on the DeWitt radiator. I also have a temp gauge I plan to install. Funny you ask this as that is what I am currently working on while I wait on headers and the tubing to modify them to fit the steering shaft. If you have suggestions I'll take any.

Pacesetter headers arrive. What do you do went you get something new, cut it up and modify it. Needed to clear the steering shaft and after a couple tries with shorty units, this was my final approach. Once again, no idea of what I'm doing, they didn't turn out to bad. The gaps are tighter than the pictures show, the tubes are just set in. I'll have them tig welded on Monday in town.

No room with the narrowed frame rails, tiranglulated 4 link and coilovers. I wouldn't gain any ground clearance anyway. At full droop, the axle is 1/2" from the pipes and the lower shock mount is still lower than the pipes

You would think they would ask. Looks like the info was pulled from this site. I really don't mind. I want to get this chassis out there for Schwartz. They have been super to work with and have bent over backwards to help me due to my lack of experience with a build like this. Looking back, the thought of a chassis was easy, never imagined it would involve every aspect of this Monte Carlo.
Hoped to hear it tonite, but, those damn buts, an o ring was missing on #2 injector. Made a great sprinkler. Need to fnd one tommorow and then maybe. I hope we entered the right fuel and injector calibrations on the FAST EFI. Some of the simple inputs aren't so simple for simple minded people as myself. Good thing Josh is a math wizard.

Great weekend. Put the first miles on it yesterday, installed the rear seat covers and Josh did the final buffing today.
Drove great. Need to adjust the Ridetechs. Had some front tire rub bedding the brakes. Very quick and precise steering, great power and firm shifts. The FAST EFI is still learning and adjusting itself. Runs better every time we start it. Still unsure on the timing settings for the XIM.
Rear seat covers turned out great by my neighbor. Ordered matching material from Procar to match the fronts. GSI should take note. They didnt check the color. Made the inerior the wrong shade, had me return it, canceled the order on me and charged me $170 restock fees. Buyer beware of GSI interiors. Frames mods for the tubbing worked great.
This build has far exceeded my expectations. Having never done this much to a car, this has turned out great. Can't thank Jeff and Dale Schwartz and their staff for the opportunity. To have this chassis is a dream. I hope I can represent them well and that they are satisfied with the end result for their business. If your building a G body you must consider this chassis. It may be pricey but look what you get that you will never have with a stock one. Come by their open house on Saturday and check it out.

The monte work great, driver not so much. Had 6 runs and work into it. Local expert rode with me on the first run and was very impressed the the Monte at the end of the day. Could not believe the attitude and potential of the chassis. He said there was 4-6 seconds left in it which would put it up near the faster cars there. A lot of advice was thrown my way on where and how to get that time back.

I don't know if it can. I did not hook it up and would also like to but haven't check into it. As easy as the car is to drive it may not be needed. It is very easy to maintain a cruise speed with zero creep.
If you do the FAST setup, contact Brian Pitcher at COMP. He knows this system and has been VERY helpful with the tuning. He set me up with the transplant kit, cam, and convertor. I wouldn't waste my time talking to anyone else.

Some video of today's action. Launch box is 150' then stop in a box. Best time 3.09
Autocross makes people take notice that this is not your average g body. Many many questions on suspension mods and the looks when they see the chassis is priceless. Josh has been offered several cars to paint for free, none accepted by him. Times are very respectable, best of 23.11. Jimi Day with his AMX ran in the mid 22's last I seen.

Tied for second and finished third in the Real Street Eliminator shoot out by Car Craft in the late model class. Placed 1st in the launch box, and third in the autocross. Dyno run was cut short due to a very lean condition at full throttle. Bigger injectors are needed. Thanks to Kevin from FAST for help to decipher the issues with the tune and injector sizing.
Thank you to the staff of Car Craft for the wonderful weekend and the treatment we received. I never expected to compete as well as I did and your encouragement and support ment more than you know.

I'm once again in way over my head, but this will be a fantastic event to attend. Jeff Schwartz set me up to attend the Sandhills Open Road Challenge at Arnold, NE Aug 8-11. I've entered the 90 mph class since I have ZERO experience with this rally style event and also safety equipment set the limit to the 95 mph class. Top speed allowed will be 120 mph. Josh will be the navigator. A big thanks to Jimi Day for letting me in. Met him at Car Craft and had a great conversation with him.
A good friend of mine saw coverage of this event on Speed Channel last spring and called me saying 'this is what you need to do with your Monte. When I contacted him Tuedays telling him of the offer he flipped. To bad he was booked and couldn't navigate.

What a weekend in Arnold, NE. Ran the 1/2 mile and the Optima 91 mph class in the Sandhills Open Road Challenge. We averaged 92, which is not a good thing, but had a great time. This area opens their arms and runs a fantastic event. To play in the same sandbox with the top pro touring drivers and cars it was an honor indeed.
The highlight was Saturday night at the awards ceremony when all of the hard work was rewarded with Optima's pick for the Ultimate Street Car in Vegas. This still seems like a dream. Thank you Optima for the invite and we'll see you in Vegas.

3407 lbs 43.8 rear. 56.2% front

My Grand National weighs 3,220 with drag wheels. My drag wheels were @ 100lbs lighter than my 18's street wheels. I dont remember the details or front/rear bias. Full car other than a/c delete. Id say 3,400 is about as good as it gets with a "pro-touring" G-body with a/c.

Yikes! People ask me all the time what my wagon weighs, I just tell them I guess around 3600. Since the Schwartz chassis drops weight and you've got some light weight stuff on there my car must be a tank. With the addition of the roll cage, boxing my frame and adding all the support braces, I'm guessing I ADDED 200-300lbs. I have Mazda production front seats, cast 17x9.5 wheels, and an iron small block Chevy too. Maybe my car is closer to 3800, lol! :injured:
Congrats on the mag dealio! That's my dream, to have a car featured, so I say that's way cool for you!

With OUSCI approaching quickly it's time for some upgrades and detailing. Got a set of fuel rail covers to hide all the wires for the FAST EFI. Looks much cleaner, now for a trip to the bone yard for the oil fill neck. I will also finally make a mount for the XIM box, install trans cooler with fan to compliment the Derale pan, and an oil accumulator. Not sure if the accumulator is needed but want the insurance on the road course. May also relocate the Optima yellow top to the trunk. I have a kit to do this but not sure if I want to risk any electrical gremlins.

I read somewhere in this thread that you were considering Spiral Flow Mufflers? I couldn't find confirmation of that, but that's what it looked like from your pictures. Just a heads-up on those, there are a lot of cases of guys losing big horsepower with those mufflers versus something more conventional. You may want to look into getting something different.
That being said, this car is phenomenal, I only hope my Monte performs even half as well when I'm all done with it.

I didnt realize this was an automatic. Where you manually shifting with your previous shifter (looks like maybe a B&M Megashifter)? ..Or did you just leave it in drive and let it shift itself?
howehot
01-04-2013, 05:16 PM
Tranny is a 4L60e with a TCI 3200 stall and TCU. Shifter is an B&M Megeshifter that was in the car with the 200R4.
On the auto cross I would start in 1st then shift to 2nd and leave it. The TCI TCU will not allow the tranny to down shift to first when lock in second gear. Likewise when starting with the shifter in second gear it also locks out first. This is use to control wheel spin like the factory PCM. With the new paddle shifters a toggle switch will activate them and the tranny will stay in that gear until its told to shift or you come to a complete stop which will put it into first. Should allow quicker exits on a tight autocross cross allowing for a 2-1-2 shift without removing my hands from the wheel. Plus it has wow factor.
One day all this will be replaced with a manual, unless this combo proves to be bulletproof. I have had zero heat issues with the auto and it does perform very well with very firm shifts and great response.

I built it to drive. After trailering to friends in Elkton, Ky, I left this a.m. for central Florida. Stopped at Bulldawg Musclecars in Acworth, GA and finally meet Ben, SDArt. He has work to do,but his Olds wagon is going to be pretty cool. Hired him to do a rendering of the El Camino.
Drove in about 5 hours of rain, some very heavy. I will say that the BF Goodrich KDW's handled the wet very well although I did pull off a couple times and waited for it to let up. Didn't wish to push the issue.
The Schwartz Performance chassis provides a very comfortable ride with the Ridetech coilovers. On Sunday I'll adjust the shock and thrash it on the autocross in Geneva, FL with my cousin. Best of both worlds.

Not a good day.
35 miles from my aunts house in Florida, I lost oil pressure. Had it towed the remaining distance. It's now down a cylinder or two. Looking for options to get it back to the truck in Kentucky. Possibly renting a uhaul and trailer. Really sucks but we'll rebuild or replace. I had a lot of fun with this $1400 motor and transmission. I think it will cost a little bit more to replace the engine.

Might sound crazy, but if you wanted to cover gas $ maybe I could come down in the wagon, you could rent a tow dolly and I could haul you back to KY. You'd have to pull the drive shaft and get a plug for the trans. I'm about 10.5 mpg towing and about 18+ empty. I'd estimate maybe about $500 in gas to get down there, haul you back to KY, then get back home to Acworth. Might be cheaper than renting a truck, trailer and gas? I could head down on the first day, stay overnight and head out early the next am. I'm seeing about 12 hours from FL to KY, and my car tows just fine at 70 mph so we could easily make it in one day, or we could stop at my place in Acworth over night and make it in two days.
When were you planning on heading back?

I'm seeing about 12 hours from FL to KY, and my car tows just fine at 70 mph so we could easily make it in one day, or we could stop at my place in Acworth over night and make it in two days.
When were you planning on heading back?
This is a great offer but I am flying into Nashville on 2/17 and bringing the truck back down here to get it back home. Ticket was $115. Would cost in rentals for a truck and trailer over $900 plus fuel to tow to Clarksville, TN.

Finally home with the Monte. Tomorrow I'll get it in the shop and begin the process of pulling the LS1 out and find what failed. Hopefully we can rebuild it. Worse case is a new long block. I think I need to stick with an LS1 or LS2 since the FAST kit i used is specific for it.

Hey there. I saw your car at the University Ave cruise in Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Iowa last summer. I pretty much crawled all over checking out the Schwartz setup/LS combo. Pretty nice setup you have yourself there! I was looking for "the owner" but he was nowhere to be found at the time. Anyhow, sweet ride!

Looks like cylinder #8 is unhappy. I'll have the engine out in the morning. Sure hope I can salvage it

Finished pulling the engine this a.m. And then proceded to tear it down. First pulled the passenger head knowing this was where the issue was, wrong. Everything looked great, so off with the drivers head and same story. Next was the pan. Walla, #6 rod bearing. Now this is the extent of my engine ability, someone else can repair and reassemble it. As much as I would love to do it I have zero experience and don't want to pull it again in a few month because I messed up. May check into a strokes kit, now would be the time.

for themoney a texas speedor equal short or long block is hard to beat for the price and quality, by the time the machine is done new parts bought, it is pinchin pennies to justify trying to rebuild a current engine, especialy if your gonna possible upgrade

Chevy High Performance has the Monte Carlo in the May issue with the OUSCI coverage. This is the sixth time it's been in print and Car Craft has yet to run the feature shot in July. Gives Josh and I a great feeling to see this exposure. Sure wonder what will be shown March 10 on SPEED as part of the OUSCI program. Make sure you tune in.

If any luck I should have the engine back in a couple weeks. Sticking with the LS1 and stroking it to 383 or 6.3L. Stroker kit is coming from Callies. Hope to have it back in a couple weeks. This kit should create close to 600hp.

Got word this week that the feature Car Craft shot in July will run in a bi-annual magazine called Car Craft Engine Swaps. It will be on bookshelves April 30. I think John said it was 7 pages.

Not sure if any body asked or if it was mentioned but just wondering if u had to do anything with the trns tunnel or floor or firewall/bulkhead for engine or trans?? Im trying to gather all info for my build in a 85 cutlass but will a lower stnce so it might be different

With the Schwartz chassis the engine/transmission sit lower and rearward compared to the stock chassis with a LS swap that I have seen. I can hardly slip my hand between the intake and the firewall. No modification of the firewall or floor pan was need. I did notch the AC box because the valve cover hit. A lower stance should not make a difference.

Well I finally have the LS383 back in the Monte and it fire right up. Sound great with 60 psi of oil pressure. That's 20 psi more than the LS1 had and there is no piston slap when the engine is cold. The Mahle pistons in the LS1 were quite loud until they got heat in them. Can't wait for the first drive. Snow is in the forecast for Thursday. Yes, May 2.

Put 25 miles on it this a.m I can't believe how much more quite and smoother it is than the previous LS1. Maybe that's why it failed with only 5000 miles on it.
I need to adjust the timing, had a ping under load. Also with 11:1 compression I'm not sure what fuel I put in last down in Florida. I'll back the timing down and change the curve a little and see what it does. I could really feel the torque increase from the stroker kit. Overall I'm very please. I really need to put some miles on it before Heidts event next weekend.

We have a couple inches now. With all the snow just west of us, Charles City had 6" this morning, I think the tes for the weekend will be adjusted downward. Are you coming to the car show Sunday in Waterloo at the casino? I'll have the Monte there.

The summer issue of Engine Swap by Car Craft Magazine has a 6 page feature of the Monte Carlo. This was shot in St Paul last July. Makes Josh and I very proud to have built this car and receive so much attention. I know the Schwartz chassis helps but that is just one part of the package.

Had a pretty awesome weekend with Chevy High Performance magazine at Atlanta Dragway last weekend. We left Thursday afternoon and returned Monday morning on a 34 hour round trip to play with the Monte. My wife is from NW Geargia so she got some family time.
Friday night Chevy High Peformance did a photo shoot for an upcoming feature and on Saturday I won the Shootout on the Jet Hot autocross. Had a lot to do with the luck of the draw and Brian Finch throwing in the towel in the semi finals. Ran down the 1/4 mile for the first time 12.67@107mph. Poor traction and 2-3 shift.
This was the only G-body on the autocross and impressed a lot of people. The Scwhartz chassis's was working very well on a tight course.

Great Project, I really enjoyed the write up!! Question for the expert I have a 86 Elcamino. I have been looking at wheels for a long time. I was wondering why you went with 18 x 10 + 25 offset (6.48 Back Spacing) and not the 18 x 10 + 12 offset (6 inch Back Spacing) and you also used spacers on the rear. Why not use a wider rear end?? And how far did you move your wheel tubs in?? I'm trying to decide weather to go with mini tubs. I know my wheel tubs are smaller then the Monte. Any information you can provide would be great!!!
Thanks RW

Great Car!!
XXR offers one offset on there wheels this was the reason fon the offset.
The rear spacer was used because I was not sure what wheel I was going with and this was the first chassis produced so they were unsure of the width also. We are now building an 86 El Camino and it will have a 1 1/2" wider rear end. As I type this you maybe confused on the spacer. Most of that is a hat for the full float Moser rear end. This is required for the outer splines on the axle. I added an 1 1/2" spacer to this for XXR wheels.
I added 3" to the tubs. It was a very simple process and I have room for 14.5" rubber. A stock chassis will require extensive work to fit that rubber.
Hope this helps.

Do you still have the SS nose and if so do you wish to part with it?

Had a great day at the GoodGuys Heartland Nationals in Des Moines. Ended up winning the Super Sunday autocross. My winning time would have placed me 4th in the street machine class on Saturday. Very happy with the performance and the power that Jesse from West Bend Dyno Tuning found.
The Schwartz Performance chassis, Ridetech shocks, Wilwood brakes and BF Goodrich KDW's are working great and the loose nut behind the wheel is slowly improving.
