Well it was time too pull the 83 Malibu wagon out and get it ready for cruisin this year. We are throwing this thing together for us to use in the shop and be able to get every one in it. We will pull the stock 305ci out and the old 250 trans and replace with a 350ci and th350 trans. The new engine will have a few upgrades but nothing over the top, just a good sounding motor with decent gas milage. Magnaflow exhaust and I maybe a set of 18's all around (not sure yet). All the A/C stuff will be replaced and setup for 134a. The color well your just going to have to wait on this..lol. Here are some picture of how we found it.

Thanks guys.

I've got the new Engine and trans Installed and have started cleaning out the old wiring. All the computer stuff for the stock carb and smog are gone. I was able to fit some Flowtech long tube heards on that have been sitting in my shop for ever. Only mod I had to do was cut the end off the drivers side collector and move it back about 3" to clear the shift lever.

I stopped by my buddys parts store today and picked up my new 2" cowl hood (GoodMark) for the wagon. To my surprize it fit really good.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/83wagon078-1.jpg

I also polised the new A/C Accumulator and some of the pipe's that go on it. I hope to make more progress tomorrow night. Only mod to get the new Accumulator to fit was trim the Inner fender.

lol I know..lol

For now 18's or 17's and at least 1" to 2" of lowing. I dont want to go to low because of the extra people and stuff in the back we will load in it. May put a rear sway bar on and upgrade the bushings to polyurethane. Brakes will be stock for now but down the road I would like to upgrade them to fill the wheels out. I want disk on the rear later too. For now I just want to get some miles on it...lol

Well I feel like Im making pretty good progress on the wagon so I wanted to practice on doing the exhaust. Ive never done one and figured this would be the prefect car to learn on and the last thing to check off my list. Im so tired of taking my car and customer cars to get them done so now we can do all this in house. Any ways I going with 2 1/4 into magnaflow mufflers. There will be a H pipe in the middle after I get the other side done. I had to notch the trans cross member on the drivers side so I shouldnt have any problems getting both pipes out the back. Should have it all done tomorrow.

Dang! Another wagon I won't be able to get my hands on, lol! Looking good so far! What are your plans for paint??? C'mon you can tell me... ;)

I won't be using my 2" drop spindles after all so they're probably going to go up for sale. They're brand new and I might could drop them off on my way to GA in May. Where in Tennessee are you?

I also have an extra set of boxed factory rear control arms and facory rear 7/8 sway bar...

Ok I'll let the cat out of the bag..lol. As of right now Im going with Orange Krush Pearl from PPG. Wheels Im looking at are RIDLER - 695 Style Gray with Machined Lip Wheel but Ive got to check and see if they have the right offset I need. There a cheaper wheel but thats good because down the road if I want to go air ride I can change them out and not feel like I just wasted alot of money.

I live about 10mins outside of knoxville Tn. I'll see what setup Im going with and I'll give you a shout. Thanks for keeping me in mind. By the way SRD art I have been looking in on your project and Its looking good.

Thanks for the compliment on my build. It's been fun and I really like it because it's unique. Wagons are just cool.

What's with all these people that wanna paint their car orange? ;) I was really torn on a color scheme but I just can't get away from it, orange is just a sweet color and as someone once said, "it will never go out of style". The rims will look great on there. I have a fleece jacket that's burnt orange and charcoal gray and it's a great color combo.

I was planning on heading through Nashville then down towards Atlanta, Knoxville seems it might only be about a 3 hour detour when I head out. Maybe we could meet for lunch or something, I'd like to check out the projects you're working on at the shop and meet a new friend.

I have two front sway bars, the largest factory G-body and the Camaro 36mm bar. I'll try them out and see which performs better with my combo. I was planning on selling my extra suspension parts eventually so just let me know if/when you're interested.

PS you can call me Ben :)

I took some time today and finished welding all the holes up on the roof were the rack was. I also test fitted the new OPG Header Panel. It didnt fit very well and had some damage to it but since I have to cut it to get it to fit o well. Its alot closer then it was but I still have alot of fitting to do. Before I took the pictures of the sides it was 1/4" out. Now Ive almost got it lined up to the fenders and hood.

Looking good! I've always loved anything wagon. Put that rear hatch on a car and I get more excited. I almost bought a sedan version of one of these Malibus a few years ago. If it was a wagon, I would have jumped all over it. Gotta get my hands on a wagon someday...

I have been so busy In the shop that its been hard to get pictures on here but don’t worry guys I’m still working on the wagon. I had to do a lot of work to get the OPGI front header panel to fit. I had to reshape it and realigned the front fender. After that the new 2" cowl induction hood had to be fit to the front. I had to time about 3/16 between the hood and header panel to get a nice clean gap. Then I jump to the hail damage on the roof. Most of the major dents I was able to metal work out. The smaller ones got some filler and then blocked down. I went ahead and epoxy the roof so no flash rust would set in while I moved on to other spots.

Coming along nicely!

That photochop looks real, great work!

As low as my car was before (I had 4.5" of clearance at the frame just behind the front tire) with the factory spindles it put the tire rods at really goofy angles, it sat on the rubber snubbers and would rebound/ bounce over bumps, and it wore out my upper ball joints really fast. What's the plan for yours? Drop spindles and tall ball joints + cut springs? Hopefully you can get it worked out to run that low, it looks absolutely killer!

I think for now drop spindles and 2" lowering springs in the back. I would rather have it higher and ride better then drop it like the picture above. Then maybe after a few shows I can upgrade to the air ride from RideTech.

At night when I’m not working on the wagon body I have been tearing down the Interior. I think for this I’m going to keep it simple and go with the stock patterns on the seat. How ever I will be going with Leather that has a slight orange and will go wild with black stitching. This is my second time doing upholster so hope all goes well.

Very nice, that header panel alignment looks great! How did you get it to line up if you don't mind explaining?

First thing I did was bolt the new Header panel on and the new hood. After I had the hood gaps set ( I had to move the core support over some) I started to tweak the Header panel to were it lined up to the center of the hood (Holes will let you move left to right some).

After that I could see the bottom of my fender needed to be moved in to line up with the Header panel at bottom. After it was as good as I could get it it was time to start trimming. The new header panel is a thick ABS so this made it easy to shave some of it down to get a good fit to my fenders on the sides and top. I did have to shave about 3/16 off the top were the hood meets the header panel or it would have not shut with out hitting.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/04/83wagon156-1.jpg

Next I started my body filler work. I used Evercoats EverGlass on the ABS header panel to build up to the fenders. Then light coats of Evercoats Rage Gold on the metal fenders and on top of the EverGlass to block sand everything together nice and smooth. I think my thickest spot is around 1/8 thick ( o and keep the filler out of your seams, keep them nice and clean )

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/06/83wagon165-1.jpg

Then when your ready Epoxy your work and move on to your next steps.

I hope this helps

This is why we are also doing a wagon. We all like to go to the shows together and needed more room for our stuff. The shop truck just wasn’t cutting it. Plus the other good thing about the wagon its like a rolling business card and shows people we can build them and drive them.

Are you talking about the large quarter glass? I think they are solid mounted to the body, but the rear doors have operational glass correct? If you could convert the rear gate to roll down you could get airflow like the old school wagons.

The rear windows don't roll down.. that's why there is quarter glass back there, it flips open.

Correct, the two back doors do not roll down, just butterfly windows open. As for the back Glass I put new shocks on to hold it up.

Holyhell - do all Gbody wagons have rear pass door windows that dont roll down?

SRD art
06-12-2012, 08:11 PM
Unfortunately yes. I thought it was the dumbest thing in the world when I first got mine. However, if you're moving and you have both "vent" windows open, it makes a pretty nice cross breeze that circulates through the whole car. It's actually engineered pretty well. Just kinda hot if you're sitting still in traffic.

G-bodies were all about saving weight so no rear window regulators, light weight steering boxes, small disc brakes, light weight 7.5" rears, aluminum rear drums, etc. are all part of the game. Diesel Cutlass' had aluminum hoods and I think many (most?) Turbo Regals/ GNs had aluminum radiator supports.

** Where did you find the rear glass shocks?? The guy at Oreily's literally laughed at me when I asked them for a pair. I just left after that and figured there wasn't any hope in searching.

The rear tailgate glass flips open, it's hinged at the top. It's also taller than the tailgate. There isn't much to the tailgate so it's pretty light weight. I suppose it could be done but you'd be doing some serious hacking to get a roll down window in there and it would prolly throw off proportions and body lines. I've driven around with my tailgate window open and it sucks in the exhaust, especially nasty on deceleration :(. A/C would be nice...

That is where I got my replacements... I just popped an old one off and the guy was able to get me a pair. I believe they were even out on the floor. He walked right over and grabbed a set after looking up the number. They were about $25 each though.. :/

Not that I know of. If you look at the door, there isn't room for the full glass in there. But it looks like it could go down half way at least. I think GM should have at least done that.

Honestly it's the reason why I sold mine. I'm not an AC guy and my kids love the wind in their face too... I thought we would learn to like it, but it didn't happen. I still love those wagons though.

Looking great! Yeah you really need to drop that thing :) . I hope one day when I get mine painted we can hook up at an event and get a couple photos together.

Ha! My interior is that same stupid blue. We've been rattle can vinyl dyeing mine black and it looks tons better. Yours will look great when done too.

Not sure on 1/4 glass, but I've read on on another forum that Caravan rear door weather stripping slips right on g-body wagons. On gbodyforum.com there's a section devoted specifically to wagons and I've learned a lot from those guys, they really love the wagons and there's some good info over there... http://gbodyforum.com/viewforum.php?f=38&sid=a7826285f1dfa82a05458d6e1d0a43b5

For my door weather Stripping im using Dannoenterpirse.com for the rubber. Part number 1720. Its as close as I can find. The rubber that is around the glass its self is ok on mine and I'll use whats there. Hope this helps.

Tailgate glass Im still up in the air.

How do you prep, sand (?) and paint those plastic interior panels?

I've got 2 kick panels that are in need of refinishing. Would you mind offering some insight to proceedure and products?

I have been trying different pieces too see what works and so far I have come up with: Wash parts with soap and water then dry, then wax & grease remover, Next spray on SEM'S Plastic and leather prep #38353 then wipe clean. After all the cleaning is done and all the grease is removed I sand with a grey scotbrite pad then clean with 38353 again. Then I prime the parts with SEM'S High build primer for plastic. Then clean and paint what every color you want, let dry for 24hrs.

Now this may not be the best way for all plastic panels but this was the steps I had to take to get my paint to stay on without coming off. You still have to watch about hitting the panels hard or you can still chip it off. Hope this helps out some what.

What part number did Belltech give you for the drop spindles and springs? I called them and they said they don't carry nothing for these wagons. The guy I bought mine from cut the front springs and put sedan springs in the rear, and I'm looking for a better ride feel for it.

My front Belltech spindles are for a s10 and are the same for the wagones. I'll see if I kept the box down at the shop and post up the part number. The rears Im using are 5118 belltech 2in lowering springs for the sedans. Im running 20's in the rear and this helps keep my back end up but if you have the same size wheels front and rear then it may be too low in the back for you. When my spring break in they may come down too low to but I'll just have to wait and see. If this happens I'll just fab up new mounts and put them were I like them. Here are some picture to give you and Ideal with 18's front and 20's rear with my seatup.

I am running the same size wheels front and rear. So I think you're right that lowered springs in the rear would set it too low. I know the previous owner didnt change the shocks front or rear when he changed the springs. Maybe I'll swap the shocks for shorter ones front and rear and see what that does for ride feel. Until I can get some drop spindles for the front and some uncut springs. This is my first time changing ride height, so forgive me if it sounds like I don"t know what I'm talking about. This is all new to me. Maybe standard shocks for a sedan for the rear since thats what the springs are? But I don't know how to figure out what shocks to run up front since the springs were cut like 1.5 coils.
BTW: That's an awesome build you've got going. And I appreciate any and all info/knowledge I can gain from you.

Any lowering springs in a wagon will set it too low... They are so heavy back there, but they can be shimmed easy enough.

Be warned- Drop spindles are a direct bolt in for 82 and up g-bodies only. I found this out the hard way, GM used 3 different spindle pin diameters for 1978, '79-81, and 82+. If your car is 78-81 you'll need to buy 82+ G-body or S10 rotors to work with the drop spindles. 78+ calipers should bolt up fine.

I ended up not using the drop spindles I bought because of this and a couple other reasons. Page 20 in my build thread explains this in a little more detail if you're curious. https://www.pro-touring.com/showthread.php?80582-Pumkinator-A-G-Body-G-Machine-grocery-getter/page20

Man your wagon is looking great, I love the stance! Can we see a side shot? I think yours looks lower than mine now. I'm jealous, lol!

When I got my new wheels and tires one thing I didn't like was how tucked in the rear wheels were, similar to yours. I ended up putting 1" spacers out back and it gave it a very wide stance look, really beefy. Your car looks great, this is just my preference and a suggestion if you like the wider look. BTW My wheels are 17x9.5 wide, 5.5" bs, with 275-40s and I used a 1" bolt-on spacer. I had to roll the inner fender lips to be safe.

True my car is a 83 wagon. So mine was a direct bolt on for me. I'll also try to get a side shot out side for every one to see, It may be a while but I'll get you guys one. Ben your wagon is looking good!

As for my shocks I didn’t use stock. I installed my springs and jacked the rear end up just to where it started to hit and measured from the top of were the shock goes to the center of the bottom mount for the shock. Mine came up to 19" with the springs I’m using. I went to my local parts store and looked up in there shock book for the size and style I needed. This way my travel is dead on and the springs can't jump out. Remember safety first. Hope this helps some.

Factory tint is 20% on SUV's, vans, etc. So I think that would look good, plus you could still see inside. I like 5% though.. it keeps the inside that much cooler in the sun and protects from fading not to mention looking stealth. :)

The wood is from lowes (1/4") and the Trim is aluminum strips from lowes also, I just took them and brushed them with 400g paper to match the wheels.
