With my car being a 68, quite a few of the parts are one year only. I decided to use the original steering column brackets but I had to weld the bracket to the column. When I welded it on, I tried to be careful and cool it down right away, but it started smoking. I want to pull the column apart and make sure that I didn't melt the wiring or anything. Has anyone pulled one of the columns apart before and is there anything that I need to watch for before I attempt it? Thanks in advance.

It's just like any early gm column, but simplified. If it's a column shift it's a little more complicated.
You can check the wires with an ohm meter and make sure they are not open or shorted to ground.
For future reference I use compressed air to keep the column cool when welding and be real carefull with the heat input.

Thanks Donny. I was actually able to take it apart just enough to pull the wiring out and check it. Everything looks good. I'm a longs ways away from putting power to the car, so this was easier to check it now than to find out down the road when I do put power to it.
