Ron DeRadd's twin turbo Camaro is back on the road. He stopped by my place today while he was out breaking it in. Thanks for popping by Ron.

I was excited, nervous, anxious all at the same time. Ringing it out, I found a few things that need attention. One thing I found that my throw put bearing is leaking. Damn! Overall it drives fantastic. The engine pulls from 1500 rpm in 4th gear-Not use to that. The turbos spool fast. No lag what so ever. Trying to stay under 4krpm and off boost during break-in. Joe Gibbs breakin oil. Ok maybe I got to 5 psi boost. Man it's hard not planting your right foot.

Awesome, glad to hear it's back on the road. You car has to be happy to be a real chevy again. ha ha Opinions vary greatly on breakin, how long are you breakin her in?

Yes, it definetly seems to be very happy with a chevy. Lol
I guess I’m just being overly cautious on this break-in. Joe Gibbs break-in oil recommends 200miles max. I didn’t break in the Ford properly with the steel rings, synthetic right out the gate. It had little more blow by then I wanted— even with the drysump pump. Sure did run like crazy, just liked RPM.
I’m hearing that the LS base motors also have blow-by issues. Since I have the LQ9 cast iron block, I’m hoping for better ring seal results then the aluminum blocks. After the break-in period I’ll switch over to a conventional 30wt for a little while. Maybe then I might switch to a synthetic if I take it out to the track.

This will be the last motor this car ever has..at least if I'm doing it..lol

Dunno? may just keep it plain.

Just crazy sweet...Nice Job...
Now put the hood on it and go hunting...it is feeding time and your beast is hungry..

I'll get the hood on soon..Hopefully it fits with the taller engine and intake pipes. Details..details.
Amazing how heavy the Z28 hood is. Kinda makes me want to get the Carbon hood..

Ron,
Did you end up making exhaust manifolds for the LQ9? Also, what turbos did you go with?

Smile--Oh Yea I did. I forgot how fast the speedo climbs, and I'm not even getting into it yet.
I did have a scare when I saw a puff of white smoke come up out of the engine bay. Boy the crap that runs thru your head. Luckly it was just a little brake fluid leaking out of the master cap and dripping on the exhaust pipe.

Made up a set using Sch 10 Stainless Pipe and flanges. Used the turbos that were on the Ford except I changed out the turbine housing for the .86ar instead of the smaller .64's. The set up seems to be just as fast spooling as the Ford. I'm not sure if it's because the hood is off, but damn the turbo blowoff seems to be much louder. Not that I'm complaining.lol

Don't get me wrong..it looks great without one, but you will need the element of surprise, and boy are folks gonna be surprised when your car shoots out of the cannon and is gone....poof...where did it go ???

Whatever the minimum is....My engine, the guy said the speed pro rings and things were ready to go right away..I drove maybe 50 miles and drained the Oil..Then it has been redline ever since...20K miles and it still screams, but it is not a crazy 800 HP Monster, so i don't know...I do believe in driving it like you will drive it....I remember being "beaten" by a few cars during the first 50 miles...I was short shifting and being careful...I saw them again after 50 Miles...end of story....

There is a difference between Moly and steel rings. The Moly rings seat easy, steel not so easy. I hear the cutoff from moly to steel on a boosted engine is around 800hp.
I'm using a steel top ring and napier 2nd. Should be a little better to help seal.
Joe Gibbs oil states I can do power pulls for dyno testing, but I'm good until I change the oil. Like you said, 50-100miles then I'll change. GAME ON!

Ron,
The manifolds look great. After you start to beat on that engine, will you update us about how they hold up. I have read a lot about log style manifolds warping/cracking from excessive heat cycles.

Will do..I think most warping and cracking from heat cycles are from thin wall tubing. I hope the schedule 10 pipe will hold up better. Also, I'm sure high egt's doesn't help either. Once I start making power pulls, I'm hoping to be at or under 1300deg. I was at 1500 with the Ford. With the LQ9, I went to the bigger .86ar turbines to help reduce some back pressure. Doesn't seem to have hurt the throttle response any. Hopefully it doesn't kill the top end power too much using the log. If I can get 775-800hp out of it, I've achieved my goal since that is all that 10psi will support with the turbos I have. If I choose 15psi, then 800-840hp is max.

Ron, what EGT are you seeing just rolling down the freeway. I run about 1350
What timing are you running off throttle cruise? ( I run around 35-40)What's your CR? I've noticed higher CR will bump up the egt's. 9.5:1 vs 8.5:1. The Ford was 9.5 and it was way higher than the previous rebuild of 8:1. 1200deg vs 1700deg at WOT.
Before with the Ford I had the egt probe before the turbo. Now I have it after. Not sure how much reduction that is in temp? 100-200deg?
I was back out on the road today after changing out the throwout bearing saturday night. (3hrs - not too bad) Ventured out a little further. 20miles or so. Noticed my egt's running between 800-1000deg during criuse. 1000 at little load from hills in 6th. (2500rpm at 75-80mph)
Got closer to home and decided it was time to open it up a little more. 1st and 2nd shot off very nice. (10psi at 5k rpm shift) Didn't see the egt's get over 1100 or the intake temp get above 105deg. I don't even have the water flowing thru the intercoolers yet.
If I am seeing a couple hundred degree reduction on the back side of the turbo, then that would be my 1300deg. But, I havn't held my foot down long enough to know for sure what it will get to. So far I'm happy with the temps.

Put the hood on and sure enough the intake pipes hit it. Had a strong feeling it would. So here are the new pipes because I didn't want to hack the hood. Now I need to replumb the A/C discharge line because it hit. That damn aeroquip A/C line is expensive.

Ron will you post a dyno chart once you get it all sorted and tuned? I'm glad to see it all come together for you. Will do. Should be in a month or so. Looking forward to the results. Found the first time I hit 10 psi I had a little drip from the rear main seal. Clearly a little more blow by then I'm venting which I need to address before power more pulls.
