I'm not sure that my car is worthy of a project post on this board, the cars that are being built here are pretty amazing. I've posted it on the 2nd gen boards but that is a more specialized audience. But the car is starting to take a more pro touring path and I'd like to show off some of L&H Kustoms work who is helping with the car. It really is a driving project, I'm almost to a stopping point and would like to put a few thousand miles on it this summer and start a next phase. I picked up the car about a year and a half ago from a really nice guy. Paint looks really nice although coverage is an issue. Didn't find any rust although the seller told me the trunk floor would need some work at some point.

This is not an all out build. It will be a driver I am planning for around 525 HP with Fast EFI.

Here are the sale ad pictures. Stared out as a stock 350 pontiac with an RPM manifold and huge air cleaner, decent stock for the most part interior and old style mags.

When I say I drove it awhile I mean about 50 miles....I realized that this wasn't really want I wanted after building some pretty nasty 4th gens, a corvette Z06, and an 03 Cobra. Hell my daily driver Trailblazer SS grocery getter was more of a performance vehicle than the Firebird. So I enlisted the help of Luke at L and H Kustoms for some direction and help!

First on the list was getting the front end aligned and Subframe connectors in. The core support was bent a bit so I picked up a very nice restored one and some DSE Subframe connectors this is the current pics:

Thanks guys!!!!! and Kevin love the compliments considering you have a ridiculous car being built right next to it. Hoping the stuff I copy is considered flattery!! I have to get out there to see your wheels after they are mounted.

Talked to Luke today hope to have pictures of the front end lined up and all the gaps perfect. He just needs to finish rebuilding the door hinges and finish it!

I love to see these transformations from an 80's throwback wheels and huge scoops to the P/T style of today. Your car is certainly worthy of its own build thread.

Thanks, I do love the before an after and hope to add more with a front spoiler and finish the stance. Well I got a pic from Luke today that I wasn't expecting...but at least now I'll have better pics of the brakes and suspension work :) Trying to think of other things I should do while its apart like this...any suggestions?

Few more things done today. Working with Luke at L and H Kustoms is pretty cool. He does alot of extra things like paint my new gold booster and weld up my frame rails a bit and paint them before putting the suspension on.

Wiring, wiring, wiring. Get a new harness or roll your own but now is the best time to upgrade the wiring harness to support all the new stuff as well as redesign the power distribution locations. Read up on this: http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/chevymain1.shtml

Time to think about an AAW classic update kit when it's in the budget..... The wiring isn't in the best condition lol but it will definitely work for the summer

MyFriendScott
02-23-2012, 06:35 AM
Upgrading that 10SI alternator to a 12SI, replacing the power distribution block with a better unit, and replacing the charging wire and primary voltage line feeds would hopefully fit in the current budget. Those things would greatly improve the current situation :) and support the EFI upgrade and things like stereo amps, electric fans, MSD ignition, upgraded headlights. Cleaning, replacing, or upgrading existing ground wires/straps are also fairly cheap insurance. It never hurts to add an additional grounding wire from the core support to the sub-frame or engine block. The headlights are grounded to the core support and there was never really a good grounding path from the core support back to the battery.

I wish I had more time and money to clean stuff up. When the new motor goes in next spring I'm going to do some serious lizard skin and detailing. But for now its crunch time as there have been some nice days. hit a snag and need a new flywheel. the hays I got will work for the 466 but not the 400...bummer. but here is the tranny out before picture. Can't wait to post the T56 picture.

Looks good. I want to put a t56 in my car so badly... looks really nice though. Was your car a 4 speed originally?

70Uglybird
04-26-2012, 07:29 AM
Car was an auto. It a fairly easy swap although the way I did it fairly expensive. If it wasnt for the killer deal I got on the tranny I would probably recommend a kit. Although if you are a decent fabricator you could do it a lot cheaper than I did! T56 especially the gto is a great tranny

ryeguy2006a
05-02-2012, 07:53 AM
I have done a lot of research on this swap, and I have a few questions? What are you doing about the speedo? How are you going to address the reverse lockout on the trans? Also I am going to send you a PM. Looking great by the way.

70Uglybird
05-02-2012, 01:32 PM
For the speedo I'm going to go with Speedhut GPS gauge. I was planning on going aftermarket anyways but instead of having to mess with calibrating etc I just figured GPS was easier. Here is a pic of the water guage. Silver face, blue back lit with white pointer...not sure how I feel about it yet so I haven't ordered the rest. I was going to do it on a 3m carbon Fiber covered bezel

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/05/IMAG0483-1.jpg

On the reverse lock out I haven't thought it through....I did about 5 t56 conversions on 4th gens hacking the auto harness and ran them without the reverse lockup hooked up (until the pcm pins were decoded later) It isn't that big of a deal to force it over. My wife had to use two hands to do it but I could do it without really trying. Its just hard to get it reverse it doesn't actually lock you out.

I'll get you some contact info for the tranny and PM You back!

Thanks!

Thanks. I've been pretty busy this summer so haven't had a chance to update the thread.

The good: suspension is great, six speed is a blast to drive in an old car. New Windows and trim, front end alignment was great.

Bad: the 400 I put in has a rod knock. I have the 466 listed earlier in thread almost ready to go. L&h have it cleaned up and painted charcoal grey. I have Paul spotted ported heads, with the roller cam. Hopefully be a fun driver. Also the brakes aren't what they should be I got a 1 inch polished master to replace the 1 1/8. I'll get some picture up soon.

ryeguy2006a
10-12-2012, 11:30 AM
Sorry to hear about the 400, if it makes you feel better I took mine out as well. But I am putting in it's place an LS1/t56!! I can't wait to see more progress on your car.

Oh, and I have the 1" bore MC on my car and the brakes are great. If you want a cheap solution like I used, you can use a C3 Manual brake MC and get it from Autozone. I think I paid 12 bucks for mine and it works great.

I have seriously considered an ls. I had the ls6 heads, intake and rotating assembly and sold it. Thinking that a big cube fuel injected aluminum head pontiac would be a better choice...I don't know... I'm not into the pontiac motor all that much and if I don't like it in its current form ill bail after driving it for a year

I almost got that master, but got a good deal on a new wilwood that is a direct repacment to what I had.

Here is the motor once I get it running ill spruce it up a bit...

Nice. :)

10-27-2012, 08:02 AM
Thanks! I hope it is pretty nasty it was a very difficult decision to go pontiac vs LS. Because of budget reasons I had to go with ported 6x's but I'm not into the setup too bad if I wanted to switch it out. Hopefully after the first drive all thoughts of that will be gone! I really need to work on re-wiring and finish the interior.

ryeguy2006a

Looking great!! You should have it running in no time. The only reason that I ended up with the LS1 is because I got a great deal that I couldn't pass up. If I was going to keep my motor, I was going to do the same thing you were. Port the 6x heads, new cam, and a good tune. Can't wait to see a video of it running!

Bobby,
Nice color choice on the big bore Poncho- gives it a different look than the usual metallic light blue. I wouldn't be too stressed out about running a Pontiac V-8 over an LS in a 2nd gen Bird- not only is it cheaper to install (100% bolt-in), but you won't have to rev it to 7000 to make big hp and mega torque. Ported iron head 455's and 461's might make around 450-475 hp and reach 500 hp with a roller cam, but it's the torque that makes big bore, long stroke ponchos a blast to drive- 500+ ft-lbs. will keep you smiling on every drive.

Geno

70Uglybird
10-27-2012, 07:03 PM
Thanks Geno, I was going to go with the blue and then just figured this color combo would look better in a black car... Once I get it running right I'll throw the sheetmetal valve covers on it and formula intake with functional ram air.

It's roller cam but a little bit big for the heads and intake, although I'm hoping I'll get it dialed in and forget all about aluminum heads and FI for a few years to get the rest of it dialed in. I'd like to start working on my trans am at some point...

Car is in the shop getting an electric fan and 342,30 spline duagrip. Posi and Moser axles.

So I decided to finally tackle the gauge bezel. I decided to use what I had. Fill in the holes for the turn signals and emblem and wrap it In 3m vinyl.

Start was from the 70 I gave up on. It was bent and beat up trans am bezel.

Thanks! One of my favorite purchases! I really need to update this thread. Not alot of visuals I've been fixing stuff like a frayed brake line, fan wiring, fuel sender, getting the alignment dialed it. I ordered Hydratech kit and look forward to having these C5 brakes really stop the car. Installed a ported Torquer II and a worked over holley 850, runs pretty good.

I'll update the thread with the Hydratech stuff and when I install my rear LED's. Next is an american autowire and some aftermarket air conditioning.

Here are some pics of the panel with the speedhut gauges I need to try to get some at night they look amazing at night.

Bobby,
Nice to see you're making forward progress- in the time we last spoke I got my Bird tagged, got 18" US Mag Bandits on the car. Great minds also think alike:

I'm planning to go up to Oregon in August- hopefully we can meet like we planned earlier. I want to run a T-56 behind my 455 and have many questions for you.

What size is your speedo and tach? If it's 5 inches did you have to make the holes bigger or is that the standard opening on the trans am bezel?

Sorry, I missed the notification that someone had replied! Yes they are the 4.5 Speedhuts which are a PERFECT fit for the stock holes. That and the well priced GPS speedo were two huge selling points.

Geno,

That is a nice clean setup you have there!!! Whats even more awesome is that we both have wires hanging down and no HVAC controls ;)

Bobby,
I like yours too- I wish I had gone the GPS route, but already had half of the Autometer gauges so I was pretty much committed to them. A/C will be the last thing I do to my Bird, but living in SoCal it's a must.

The 406 Pontiac in my Bird now runs well- so good I'm in no huge rush to get my 455 in the car. I finished the shortblock over a year ago and decided I would go all in with the heads and cam instead of just running iron heads and an HFT cam. The 325 cfm SD Performance e-heads and their Road Paver solid roller cam will make around 600 hp, so do you think it's worth going for the newer TR-6060 trans vs. an earlier T-56?

I'd go with an earlier t56 from a gto or ctsv. The guy who owns t56rebuilds is a really good friend of mine if you get a core he will make it perfect for your car. The newer ones have a bigger case.

Spend the morning installing this, need to get the low pressure return line hooked up and then I'm looking forward to finally having good brakes after three years!!!!!!!!

How did you wire the alpine stereo in your car?

Wow can't believe I haven't posted an update since 2014! Where has time gone! The car ran but the fuel lines oozed fumes and anytime it got over 78 degrees outside it would over heat when I got stuck at a stop light. So I may have put a few hundred miles. Decided to just go all in on the Pontiac thing and added:

SD Performance KRE heads
SD Performance Stumpuller custom ground for EFI
Holley Terminator with Distributor to electronically control timing
Got ahold of the Tribal tubes guy and had some headers made (he is in state)
Restomod tank with 5th gen module and Vapor works
All new fuel line and 6AN flex line.
Black CVF serpentine kit
Vintage Air
Harland Sharpe Lightweight Rockers

Here is the motor now!

So before putting tank in I had to deal with this some how

191430

Have rust here and after that its just in the "dog house" Up front drivers side. Was in the middle of looking at temp solutions and did the Covid thing and bought a house with 2 acres but had no shop. So while I was building a 48x 36 shop I had to get storage for some cars. Why not get some work done so send it off to Graceful Kustoms in Eugene.

Out with the old:

New trunk with a door, I'm guessing that the door will not be popular :) Wasn't an easy decision but with all the stuff going on with the pump etc I had it cut.

191433

So did new powder coated subframe for car with Speedtech streetfigher setup, DSE steering box and Wilwood brakes. I had to go 4 piston for now because I can't get the 6 piston setup.

At this point the Project is way delayed as the shop ended up moving to a bigger setup. But that did give me time to finish my shop. Really a dream come true can't wait to get it all dialed in so I can actually use it!!

191435191436

Picked up some Recaros which I'm pretty excited about!

191437

Car was on the ground to be picked up!

Made it home and got it on the lift!

DSE mini tub
Speedtech Torque arm
Moser 9inch with 3.50's (466 Pontiac with GTO T56)
Wilwood brakes the 4 piston 13 inch rotors

Thank you! It was quite the ordeal to get it built during all this craziness, time wise and went way over budget. But really a dream come true, what's crazy is that I feel like I'm already running out of room! But the El Camino is my dad's I'm finishing up a LS3\t56 Magnum install and when that is complete it will free up quite a bit of room! That is a BIG car!

Funny not sure if you remember you gave me advice NOT to go crazy. Tried to listen but ran into some snags and one thing led to another. I'll be installing a set of your Engine mounts with the 466 this weekend!

I'm really enjoying this build and it's providing inspiration while I map out the build on my '70. I'm planning to go EFi 400 stroker and TKX and now I've seen yours, the trapdoor in the trunk floor has been added to my list of must dos! Hoping I can get back to the US soon (I'm in England) so I can at least pack a few parts in my suitcase and save some shipping costs!
