Awesome project. What kind of suspension are you using? Wheel/tire specs?

Auto Rod Technologies
02-10-2012, 07:41 AM
The suspension is from suicide doors, they make nice stuff but there was a long wait, good thing we pre-ordered the parts 4 months before the project came stateside. It worked out rather well.

We have billet specialties wheels, backspacing was built for this truck but I do not remember the exact specs off the top of my head and I have them at home in my spare bedroom with anothre set of billets, and fragiles. :)

Not sure on tire size yet, most likely a 40 series.

I am really anxious to start back up on this truck soon, but i'm going to need some equipment to progress to much more, one thing at a time. right? In the end it's all worth it.

Honestly I can't even say that, these projects are so much fun. especially when the customer has a open mind.

the hood was split into 3 pieces, turning the hood sides into the upper fender, then welded upper fender to rear extension to get rid of ugly body line. Look at the previous pics, I think you will understand.

I took a pic of the axle installed today and worked on rough fitment of the radiator, I hate how the radiator is designed to sit behind the support, so I am going to build it in. I got a decent start today, but I'm going to need some metal to do much more.

It's been a bit since i've posted a update on this, been really busy with my regular resto's so haven't done much to this or the other projects posted on here.

Having a hard time capturing how this looks with a camera, looks much better in person.
Just playing with design with the rod, going to be 1.5" tubing when finished, then finished with some sheet metal.

Not 100% sure yet but I believe this is what i'm going to go with. I'll know more when I test it with some tubing.

It's a 72 4x4, was used as a grass rig for a fire dept, then a nursery bought it but it had carb issues so they didn't use it.
It only has 18k miles on it, it had VERY little rust, but was pretty beat up, the body mounts were coming through the floor it was split all over the place..
All of that is fixed now, just need to get the wiring done, paint the bed and put a bed floor in.

It's been on the back burner for a while, did most of that last winter, will probably finish it this winter..

The truck build is on my facebook page along with many other projects.

I've been lurking on these forums for a long time, but never registered until today when I found this thread and just had to comment. Saw the truck posted on the LSXtv Facebook page and followed the links here. I was just amazed by some of your ideas and the work you have done. I'm building an LS powered 64 C10 stepside, and my build is very similar to this. I had a few of the same ideas like the smoothed firewall and dash for mine. Seeing them done just makes me want to work harder to get mine finished! Inspirational! Keep up the good work!

Not much to update. a little boring over here, tig welded the front inner support rails and ground down, also bed mounts are tacked into place.

I feel your pain also on the time vs progress. I had a few days off work & tried to rebuild a few things plus my new underhood cover before an all chevy show this weekend. Went in with the top of the cover in G-2 primer &no sides to the cover built yet. Oh well.......

Spent some time making a jig to support the cross members to cut them up to put exhaust transfer tubes and hangers in.. I'm pretty happy with the outcome. I wish I could continue with the exhaust but we have to have a 2-piece drive shaft built first which will dictate the height of the second cross member. But i figured the more prepared we can get the better.

Jigs make for better results. Looks good.

At one time I use to think they were a waste of time but after using a few and realizing how much things can move from welding, and also how much easier it makes it to duplicate things I find myself starting to use them more and more. Even for basic things like this..

Another benefit is that I now have a jig for if I ever wanted to make a cross member for another C-10 from scratch for some reason.

I haven't posted anything on this forum in a while, but I decided to make a retro looking engine cover for the LS1.
I still have a bit to do but it's starting to take shape.

Cover should look cool. Can't particularly say I've seen a dual quad style cover on an LS1 ;;;;;;;YET. Always good to be different.

That was kinda the idea,, make it a little different and give it a little bit of a retro flair.. Glad it worked out, I had a lot of time into making that thing.

Your exhaust hanger design is fantastic. It's so hard to find a good hanger set up, you literally have to be inventive

Thanks guys, and sometimes it's those necessary items that can stump you. Especially when they don't work with your original plan. However I like this better anyways.

Are you still running the filter into the cab with that new setup? Why the change from the original inner fender setup you fabbed?

Yes we are still running the ram air hood set-up.

And there were just a lot of things I didn't like about the original set-up, if I had made it all bolt on it would have been a lot nicer, but it was welded to the firewall which when the tubing was welded to the firewall we had more warpage than I was happy with, So I wasn't happy with that, and I wasn't happy with the radiator support either, so I started over, new firewall, made a radiator support from scratch to a design I am much happier with. I originally wanted to use aircraft rivets to hold the inner panels to the original bars, this made it hard to work on anything in the engine compartment without taking the cab off, which made me realize it would make it hard for the owner to work on. Especially after fresh paint, It was harder to get things to line up properly because the radiator support was welded to the structure, left little room for adjustments. I wasn't happy with the hood hinge set-up, also have a new plan for that, just need to get some pieces machined before I can begin that part of the project. We are also now going for a cleaner look, the original wasn't bad but with everything going with a cleaner/classier feel the first design didn't fit as well, that had more of a aggressive look. However if I had made it all bolt in I don't think I would have started over, but with everything I was unhappy with this just became the best solution.. I'm not necessarily happy with having to re-do everything but in the end it will be worth it over all. I think part of the issue is that over the course of the 4 years this truck has been here our fabrication work has evolved a lot and I just wanted to bring this up to where we want to be with everything. Luckily once this is finished I can continue as planned.
