View Full Version : Oil pressure sensor for gauges - Location??

Getting ready to order gauges and was curious what you guys are doing for oil pressure sending units for your oil pressure gauge? I guess the stock oil pressure send needs to be hooked ot the PCM. Heard of guys putting the send for the gauge in the oil block down by the oil filter. To me it looks like I might not have enough room with the header in the way. What did you guys do to overcome this?

I tossed the oil pressure sender on both my swaps, no problems.
I used a metric to 1/8" NPT adapter from speedway motors in the original sender location.

That would be easy if that's the case. So just leave the plug on the motor harness loose then?

I think the oil pressure sender may be required with VVT. I eliminated the wiring for it entirely when I cleaned up the harness.

S&P makes a 16mm oil pressure adapter fitting which locates behind the intake manifold, available in 1/8”,1/4”, 3/8” and 1/2” NPT.

I drilled & tapped the block off plate above the oil filter for the 3 swaps I've done/doing. Its easy to get to & took very little time. In my 69 the motor is very close to the firewall & I didnt want to mess with adding anything to the back of the motor. I think either works fine, whatever works for you. On my first swap I was told I needed to keep the factory oil pressure switch for the computer to be happy. After reading several posts on here it seems that is not the case, at least with an LS1. See I just had a guy with a LS swap the other day tell me I'd need to keep the stock hooked into the harness?? But that's a few of you that said you don't need it.

This is what i did, a little pricey but it has provisions for other connections if needed.

Rick, that's a nice piece.

Depending on your harness you need the factory oil pressure sender with a genIV engine. I know mast and street and performance use it.

I have drilled and tapped the factory block before but it's sort of thin right there. I have welded 1/8" pipe bungs on there as well and turned in a 90 degree pipe fitting.

The factory sensor is not needed. Autometer sells an adaptor.

So they build that wiring into the harness for no apparent reason then?

I get my genIV 5.3 running without that sensor using Mast Motorports harness and had a check engine light. The code was for the oil pressure switch/sender. When I installed the sender and plugged it in I was good to go. In my application I needed it.

It was not needed with my stock ECM and LS1. Never saw a code etc. I researched this on LS1tech.com before I did it. What ECM are you using?

From what I understood it is not necessary on the GenIII, but the GenIV reference oil pressure because of the VVT and AFM/DOD.

I used the mast ecm and harness. I did not have vvt and I eliminated the afm. While there was not a "need" for the sender, the rest of my electronics required it.

I am sure that it could be turned off if using a stock ecm with a GENIV engine. I was led to believe that the oil pressure reference was also linked to the fuel pump circuit through the ecm but never actually confirmed that.....

The pressure sender provides a signal to the ecu and runs the gauge through the ecu.
You can have the oil pressure CEL tuned out without the sender.
I eliminated the wiring and pressure sender and had the CEL tuned out on my 02 and 05 engines.
Like I said above, I've heard the VVT engines might need the pressure sender.

I'm running a '99-'02 rewired harness and reprogrammed ECU, so basically a Gen III setup.

I have the Gen IV VVT motor the sender is not needed. Like others have said it is simply for the gauge on the vehicles these engines came in. I also did have the CEL because it wasn't getting that signal but had it tuned out of the PCM so it is no longer an issue.

I stand corrected.
I guess you cant believe everything you read online.
Oh wait.....that might apply to your post too....lol

Haha lol, well I sure hope its not needed because my standalone harness didn't come with it :)
