I'm mostly a ford guy, so forgive me if this is a simple question, but i know what an LS1, LS3, LS5 and LS6 are... but what does the "LS" stand for??

The LS1, LS2, LS3, etc., etc. are just code letters for that family of (or variation of) engines. They don't "stand" for anything. They are just GM's way of internally tracking the design and build of the engine variation. Just like Z28 is an RPO code used to order "that" option on the Camaro. It just kind of stuck and was turned into an actual car name.

When they first came out, us street rod types (small blocks are pretty) determined that LS stood for "looks stupid"

I have since seen the error of my ways and while they still look stupid they are stupid fast so I leave the hood shut.

They are not a very aesthetically pleasing engine to look at.. that's for sure!

But they are indeed a massive improvement over the venerable SBC.

You're right on. They aren't an attractive engine, but they can be made to look better more like a vintage motor. I've seen some killer set ups.

I dunno. I personally think they look way better than an sbc.

^ I agree w Chris. Look at Matt's motor....a thing of beauty! Lately I'm getting more enamored w the Mast intake and a 4150 FI set up.

You talking about Alcala's LS? Well that's not fair, Ron. :) No one in their right mind would not like that intake.

totally agree Bro, but even w/o the precision metalcraft intake, the valve covers, snorkles and hidden coils make it pretty. To me at least....

It doesn't "mean" anything, and it certainly doesn't stand for any of the above (but those are fun) its a shortened RPO code (Ls1, Ls2 etc.) that GM uses to identify this particular Generation III and up engines. RPO (regular production option) codes are used to ID all of the various options used on GM vehicles.
