View Full Version : What’s considered sacrilege?

So I want to build a new car…what’s considered sacrilege these days? I kind of come from a hot-rodder back ground I guess where anything was cool.
The last couple projects have all been exotics though…
I guess have had some ideas floating around for years and it’s time to start one of them.
We all see Ron’s awesome blue stang with a Chevy motor which to me is perfect, but I’m sure others hate the thing. I know people frown on the guys throwing big supra motors in cameros and skyline motors in mustangs, but why?
What about the Lexus V8? Man it’s such a smooth running motor…
I mean I have a German 6 cylinder, twin turbo six speed all wheel drive train sitting around that is good for 600 plus wheel horsepower….wouldn’t it be cool to see it under a 65 fastback?
I am putting on my flame suit before I post this so I’m ready! Flame away!

The way I see it, build it and they will come to challenge it. For the most part, I enjoy seeing a classic look/car with high tech up-grades, so if that's your thought's, try something new, but it's going to be almost impossible to beat american muscle. Additionally, I don't see doing a Ford with a GM motor a bad thing more of a smart thing actually. LOL, now I'm in for it! Oh, "smooth motor" probably not so cool, must sound Angry when under stress to be cool. See ya, good luck!

I always say build the car for yourself. If you have an idea, time, talent, the money or all the above then go for it. It doesn't matter if you think inside the box or outside, just make sure your happy with what you build!

if money was not an object i would be building a mid engine, all wheel drive chevelle with a v10 out of a lambo! if you don't piss people off with a custom, then you're not doing it right! lol I'm with ya all the way!

The Caddy people were pissed when I put an Eldo engine in a Pinto. To me nothing is off limits.

What I would consider sacrilege is wasting that drivetrain on almost any American body. If I had that stuff "laying around," I'd find something like this to put it in.

Yep, went to Catholic school. They do frown on that one don't they. :smoke:
....I think it depends. If you had an original mustang boss 302 and stuffed a sbc in it that might be wrong. It would be a complete waste of a sbc. Sorry, Chevy lover humor.

LOL...Mine is angry at Idle, and Insane at WOT... Primitive but very fun.. But to your point...Whatever suits you..
For me, i have a numbers matching car, So i have the original Driveline because i think that is the coolest thing... Keep the LT-1..Not as Smooth as an LS, But numbers matching.
True, i went with Coil overs, Hotchkis, 4 Willwoods and more, so it sure is not Original...but Crazy fun and handles like a New Sports car...
So, do whatever Build you want...No hate or Flames from me..
No rules, have fun building what YOU want.....hell I'm build a four door.

This is just a personal feeling but, I never understand why somebody would build an over the top custom out of a numbers matching SS or RS when there are so many coupes out there. The same goes for RT chargers GT mustangs and so on. If you are going to replace everything anyhow would it not be cheaper to start with a low end version of the same model that you would like to build? If the car you build is a 600 hp corner carving monster do you realy think somebodys going to care that it was once a six bang low option car.

That is a valid feeling.. For me, it is personal choice.. I have made a carving monster, but I choose to run the original Numbers matching LT-1, ect...
One, is that it is so cool to take the original old school and modify Certain components to make my personal car , what I want. I have owned it since 1983, it is a true Z/28, But i will die before it ever gets sold, so the next person can do as they choose.. Some of it is 1971 rebuilt , and some of it is 2011 tech, the combo is Insane fun..

Your car, your rules. I like to have something different, so building a less common car with whatever parts interest you is great. I think the only time I might call sacrilege would be if you had some really rare model that is highly collectable and then cut it up... and I am talking like a Yenko 427 nova or something you almost never see.

On this site....engineering speaks for itself....use what you want, people here will judge you (if that matters to you) on the execution of your project...not what it is.
You may get suggestions that some choices might work better for you than others, but thats what you'd expect at a site where engineering a car is the centre of focus.
Personally, if I ever get the money to do it, I want to stick one of the Aussie Commodore AWD LS series drivetrains under a 2nd Gen Firebird.....what a touring car would that be???? :)

If you are going for shock factor, it will be pretty hard to get anybody ill at you on this site. There just aren't that many purists. There is a Mustang with an LS, a Camaro that had a twin Turbo Ford motor, and at least two Camaros with Japenese Turbo engines (one is a work in progress). Most people here appreciate good craftsmanship and function.

Well i guess i'm goin to H.E. double hockey stick...Guilty as charged literally!!! also does keeping a Pontiac ALL PONTIAC with 99 Ls1 from a Firebird Formula keep me from going to the aforementioned place??

If you don't build the car for the way you want to use it you will be spending lots more $$$$ to ever get it that way once you realize you were not honest about your intentions.
So the sacrilege would be to not follow your vision of the car you need to satisfy your needs !

build whatever you want, but don't get all huffy when you can't find a buyer for your Buick inline 8 powered 63 split window Corvette that's riding on a Blazer frame with 24" spinners after you get sick of it and want to move on to something different.

When a car is as much of a bare hulk as many project cars are these days, the VIN hardly matters.
Maybe a real Hemi or Z-28 car is still too important to cut up, but that's a much smaller group of cars than an R/T or an SS. There were tens of thousands of R/Ts and SS's built every year.
A Dodge Charger R/T is worth quite a bit more than a base model Charger when it's fully restored, but as a bare hulk it's hardly worth any more money than a base model. So why not modify it? Yes, the R/T car could be built into a stock condition car and take advantage of that VIN, but who is going to do it? It's not cost effective to restore the car without losing money because of the condition it's in, valuable VIN or not. So the only buyers ready to pay extra for that valuable VIN probably don't want it as a bare hulk. Unlike a customizer, they can find what they want somewhere else without losing a pile of money and years on a difficult project in the process.

Agreed ^^^^^^^ My car is totally cut up. It specs out as a 69 Chevelle Sport Coupe, 307 PG.....It was a parts car, it did have a black interior.....I wouldnt have done that to a real SS, I would have moved on.

Good point and while do agree, there are exceptions as you mentioned. I saw a McNeish (sp?) certified COPO 'hulk' on eBay sell for $22k. That's a long road, but in the end a $150k car.
