So we have a thread for known combinations that work.

I'd like to start a thread about combinations of LS motors in first and second gen Camaros that didn't work so well and how you solved it.

So, I suppose to be most helpful we should have the basics:

Car:
Motor:
Transmission:
Transmission Crossmember:
Fuel Tank:
Headers: (brand, size and finish)
Motor Mounts:
Oil Pan:
Stock/Modified/Replaced Subframe:
Exhaust used:
Radiator Used:
Wiring Harness:
What issues came up?
How did you solve them?
What advice would you give new LS swap DIY'ers?

I truly would appreciate any of your guys' help with this list as it will certainly help future guys out there!

Any questions I missed?

~Eric

PS - Hey mods, can we sticky this?

I live overseas, so far away (OK with the Internet the world got a lot smaller) from all the convenient resources you guys & gals have nearby. Nevertheless I swapped a LS3/4L80e and a year later a T-56 in place of the 4L80e. I did this a couple of years ago. Back then there was far less materials for sale then there's now. However, I did my homework and it basically went pretty smooth.

So best advice I can give you: DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!!

Best place with lots of info: LS1tech.com. I would specially recommend the stickies to quickly get up to speed .

Car: 1968 Camaro
Motor: LS1 F-Body with F-Body stock accessories
Transmission: F-Body T56 6 speed
Headers: Dynatech ceramic coated headers (1-7/8" w/ 3") (Excellent Clearance around the stock power steering set-up)
Motor Mounts: Carshop motor mounts stock location. (Alternator barely clears with F-body accessories)
Oil Pan: Stock F-Body modified (Extended pick-tube, no windage tray) (Note: oil pan notching not required if running the car shop plates with a f-body oil pan, It would have cleared)
Subframe: stock subframe with tubular control arms, coil spring, sway bar upgrades (stock body bushings and stock power steering
Exhaust used: magnaflow ss exhaust kit
Transmission Crossmember: S&P crossmember - new style
Radiator Used: 2002 Camaro Radiator and Fans (Homemade Brackets)
Wiring Harness: Chevy Thunder (very well marked, nice budget harness) This harness is a good quality harness.
Fuel Tank: spectra premium EFI tank. reflared Gm press on style flares for sending unit. (non-tubbed cars only)
Fuel Lines: Dorman nylon 3/8 & 5/16 fuel line and connectors, 99+C5 filter/regulator
Gauges: Dakota Digital VHX. Love the gauges, instructions come with LSx conversions
Power Steering Lines: metric conversion fitting with 90 degree 3/8 tube flared. 11/16 supply and 5/8 return. Napa auto parts fixed me up with these.
What issues came up?
-Firewall and Trans Tunnel Clearance - Cut and Modified to clear. A stock firewall should be fine, mine was modified.
-Motor mounts needed to be ground slightly to clear long tube headers on DS
-T56 firewall bracket-holes had to be filed to line up
-Engine sets very close to firewall but will be fine
-Clutch pedal bracket dimensions from street and performance did not work-I had to modify bracket to work with my set-up.

What advice would you give new LS swap DIY'ers?
-Figure out your budget!!
-First thing first is figuring out what type of LSx motor you want, whether your using an after market frame or a stock 67-69 frame. Power steering, manual, or rack and pinion? headers? Gauges? fuel injected or carbureted? what kind of HP/TQ? auto or manual? stock accessories or aftermarket?
Oil pan, power steering lines, mounts, exhaust manifolds, fuel injection/motor harness, transmission x-member, exhaust, fuel tank, fuel regulator/filter, radiator with electric fans, flexible fuel line, radiator hoses, ac braket if running air conditioning.
-I would have went with the complete BRP kit if I was to do this again. BRP sets the motor forward more and a little higher, but works quite well.
-Figure out what type of steering set-up your going to use ahead of time.
-Dynatech headers will not work with the BRP Kit! Hedman 3/4 length do work and look great! Tried Dynatechs already on a friends car.
-I would have purchased the spectra tank if I was going to do it all over again. The caprice tank swap is a cheap alternative though.
-Kwik Performance Bracket works as well as it looks. If your going the AC route with stock accessories I recommend this bracket. Well worth the money. (You can always modify your frame when using f-body accessories)

Any questions I missed?Added crossmember, fuel tank, body bushings

Car:73 Firebird
Motor:02 LS1
Transmission:T-56
Headers: BRP Heddmen 1 3/4 step to 1 7/8 coated
Motor Mounts: BRP
Trans cross member: BRP
Oil Pan: Stock
Stock/Modified/Replaced Subframe: Subframe is stock, trans crossmember had to drill new holes for otherwise no mods
Exhaust used: (not inthe car yet) 3in pipes from headers to 2 chamber flowmasters dumped before rear axle
Radiator Used:4th gen with fans
Wiring Harness: daytonayellaz (here on the board) custom made for me
Fuel Tank: Spectre fuel tank
What issues came up? My son and I test fitted the motor and trans using BRP's instructions, fit perfect as they said it would. Drilling the crossmember holes for the trans has been the only real hassle with no lift.
How did you solve them? So far I feel that I've solved most of the problems before running into them due to research across all the forums. I went with a kit knowing that the kit works, yeah it was more money but worth it to me.
What advice would you give new LS swap DIY'ers?I've been planning this project for years so the research has been a lifesaver for sure. I made a book 3in thick of different forum posts and articles for each step of this project. I planned 7K and it is now @ 9K just because of the unexpected costs. Plan, research, make notes, and then do it, it makes it much easier IMO. ASK QUESTIONS and more questions. Good luck with your builds:cheers:

Car: 67 Camaro
Motor: 2004 LS6
Transmission: T-56 built by local Trans Guru
Transmission Crossmember: Custom fab at home
Fuel Tank: Ricks Vaporworx
Headers: (brand, size and finish) Edelbrock LS for 67-69 Camaro
Motor Mounts: Energy Suspension LS swap kit (3-1147G I think)
Oil Pan: Factory 4th Gen Camaro
Stock/Modified/Replaced Subframe: Heidt's Pro-G subframe
Exhaust used: N/A yet-I have a prodigy bar in the back and I hear that exhaust pipes are a challenge to route due to the cross support bars, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there!
Radiator Used: Entropy
Wiring Harness: Factory Engine; American Autowire, classic update; entropy electric fan wiring harness
What issues came up? The Heidt's frame moves the engine forward an inch or so, so the T56 thankfuly fit with no trans tunnel interference, but the supplied trans crossmember did not fit the T-56.
How did you solve them? Fabricated a custom crossmember
What advice would you give new LS swap DIY'ers? PATIENCE! Not everything will always go right, and there should be some expectation of problems when introducing new technology to 40 year old technology..patience and the ability to "walk away" when getting frustrated with something for a little bit go a long way. Never doubt the healing power of taking a short break when things get annoying. Aggrivation and power tools leads to component damage!

Car: 1973 Camaro
Motor: 2002 LS1
Transmission: T56
Transmission Crossmember: ATS
Fuel Tank: Spectra Premium
Headers: (brand, size and finish) 1 3/4 Doug Thorley LS1 swap headers (Car was used for prototyping the headers)
Motor Mounts: ATS adapter plates-early style small block mounts
Oil Pan: 2002 Camaro
Stock/Modified/Replaced Subframe: Stock
Exhaust used: Custom 2 1/2 aluminum pipes-Flowmaster Delta 50 mufflers
Radiator Used: AFCO (made for swapping the LS1 into 2nd gens)
Wiring Harness: Speartech with PCM mounted under dash
What issues came up? Probably could come up with a long list of small things like the configuration of the fuel lines, mounting of the PCM and clutch master cylinder, ect.
How did you solve them? Used stock type steel fuel line, modified with push connect flares and built factory type fuel hoses. Used Corvette fuel filter. Clutch master cylinder bracket from a 3rd gen Camaro modified and bolted to the brake master cylinder/booster.
What advice would you give new LS swap DIY'ers? Take your time, plan everything out, do lots of research and ask lots of questions. It's not really all that difficult but almost everything needs to be changed or reworked.

Had to move crossmember forward 1.25" for Magnum transmission, not a big deal. Making sure to pull clean air between MAF & TB for crankcase ventilation while building my cold air intake. Building a power steering line from the pump to the box that clears the pump pulley.

I'm sure I'll think of more to add.

Noob to the forum but modding cars is a sickness that has no cure!

Car: 69 RS
Motor: LS1
Transmission:TKO500
Transmission Crossmember: Still working on this
Fuel Tank: Stock with a Tanks inc retrofit and 255
Headers: (brand, size and finish) Dougs LSX for 1st gen F body
Motor Mounts:Mounts are Engergy suspension with Ebay LS plates from cutthroat 4x4 flipped up side down
Oil Pan: Mast LSX (found a deal on Craigslist)
Stock/Modified/Replaced Subframe:Stock
Exhaust used:Flowmaster 2.5
Radiator Used: American Eagle 2 row for 69 Camaro and modded it using the 99 Camaro LS fans
Wiring Harness: S&P (swap meet find)
What issues came up? Engine did not set into the engine mounts. Mating trans to the LS engine. Mechanical v. hydraulic clutch
How did you solve them? so I had to flip the adapters and grind a bit of the energy suspension mounts to align the bolt hole. Still working on the transmission. Just need to confirm if I need the .400 difference flywheel for my 12 inch clutch. Will have to go with my mechanical due to funds. looks like I can get Z bar to work using the GM 621 bell housing.
What advice would you give new LS swap DIY'ers? Plan out the build and don't throw all the shiny parts that you see. Look for combinations you like and see if someone has done it. Take your time on it and be patient. There are lots of builds out there. Some are supper nice but call for super $$$$. Use as many parts from the donor car and yours you can.

Transmission: T56 out of '04 GTO
Transmission Crossmember: ATS
Fuel Tank: Ricks SS
Headers: (brand, size and finish) Dougs long tube ceramic coated - rubs steering box
Motor Mounts: not sure
Oil Pan: Autokraft
Stock/Modified/Replaced Subframe: Stock subframe
Exhaust used: 3" Pypes
Radiator Used: Alum. dual fan
Wiring Harness: PSI Conversions out of NJ

What issues came up?
Truck accessories have different offset than LS1 accessories
LS3 MAP sensor will not work with typical LS1/LS2 etc. engine harness.
Don't need stock oil send - use Autometer adaptor 2277 (metric to 1/8 NPT) to install std style oil send for your oil press. gauge.
LS1 camaro and corvette O2 sensor plug ends are different - Corvette has 4 flat
GTO T56 tranny has different slave hydraulic line fitting than LS1. Replace GTO T56 slave with LS1 slave or buy adapters to change out LS style clutch master line with AN style line.
Coil relocation brackets look nice but added $$ plus added $$ to spark plug wire kit.
Pretty aftermarket valve covers don't have PCV provisions - Keep stock covers and coil mounts

What advice would you give new LS swap DIY'ers?

Lots of work has been completed, but we haven't fired the engine up yet. We're waiting to get the car back from the interior & paint shop before completing the engine & driveline.

Car: 1969 Camaro
Motor: 2007 LS7 427 Dry-Sump
Transmission: Keisler T-56 Magnum
Transmission Crossmember: BMR
Fuel Tank: Rick's Stainless Steel
Headers: American Racing 1 7/8" Stainless Steel
Motor Mounts: Dirty Dingo Adjustable
Oil Pan: Factory GM Dry-Sump
Stock/Modified/Replaced Subframe: TCI
Exhaust used: TBD
Radiator Used: DeWitts w/ Dual Fans
Wiring Harness: GMPP LS7 Kit
What issues came up? Engine had to be set further back, but the Dirty Dingo gave us the adjustability to get it perfect!
How did you solve them? Adjustable Dirty Dingo mounts
What advice would you give new LS swap DIY'ers? Take your time, and be sure to spend quite a bit of time educating yourself before starting the swap. There are a LOT of swaps that have been completed, and odds are you can find someone that has done it. The internet can be a great tool, and don't be afraid to ask those that have done it! Also, be sure that the engine/trans combo you're going to run is a factory-installed setup if you're going to run a GM ECM/TCM. A 6L90 six-speed auto would be super cool behind your LS6 engine, but that will require a stand-alone trans controller! We have had a few customers run into issues similar to this.

issues: engine sits alittle higher and forward but everything went right in. oil pan a little low but i drive mine alot and over speedbumps and i haven't ran into any problems.

Transmission Crossmember: Kiesler
Bellhousing: Quicktime
Fuel Tank: Stock with Tanks inc. PA4 pump

Oil Pan: GM muscle car came with the engine.
Subframe: Stock
Exhaust: Flowmaster 2.5 inch american thunder.
Radiator: AFCO
Wiring Harness: GMPP

Problems encountered: Dingo mounts didn't position the engine back far enough. Fixed with the Holley stock position mounts. Manual clutch linkage had to be switched to hydraulic setup because i didn't want to grind the engine block or my new bell housing. Still in progress, I will update more when I am driving it.

Advice: Don't be scared of the swap. Like others have said do lots of research, read through the forums and do lots of planning.

I initially ordered an American Powertrain X-Factor transmission crossmember but it didn't fit (see last picture). The transmission mount landed about 1.25" in front of the crossmember. I ended up ordering a universal 6" drop crossmember from Speedway Motors, cut it up, made frame brackets, and welded it all together. It turned out really nice and I have $60 and 5 hours of time invested in it.
My Holley oil pan also hit the subframe so i had to notch the frame area under the pan approximately 3/4" deep. I notched it so you cant see it without the motor being out of the car.
What advice would you give new LS swap DIY'ers?
READ, READ, READ!!!! I would read up on known combinations here at PT.com and LS1tech.com in the conversions and hybrids section6378063785637886378963790

CAR: 1968 SS 'vert
ENGINE: '08 LS2 from TBSS (Thanks Travis!)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/IMG_7766JPG-1.jpg
TRANSMISSION: 4L70E
CROSSMEMBER: Modded TH350 one that was in the car (Great work Brian!)
TANK: Stock tank with built AeroMotive system to handle 700hp (For that future Maggie!) https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/IMG_6854JPG-1.jpg
HEADERS:DynaTech LSx conversion for First Gens (Fit PERFECTLY!)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/IMG_6190JPG-1.jpg
Motor Mounts: DSE LSx conversion mounts (worked PERFECTLY with DynaTechs)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/IMG_5864JPG-1.jpg

OIL PAN:Mast MotorSports LSx (no hacking, no fabbing, just mount and let 'er rip)
SUBFRAME: Stock w/ coilover mod and DSE tubular UCAs/LCAs
EXHAUST: MagnaFlow 2.5", tucked up nice & tight!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/IMG_7430JPG-1.jpg

RADIATOR: Entrophy "EBAY" four core LSx for First Gens
WIRING HARNESS: Stock TBSS reworked by Jon @ SpearTech
WHAT ISSUES CAME UP?: Just some little things along the way. Most of the parts were thought thru and built with a "systems" approach in mind. Example: when I bought the DSE mounts, they told me that the DynaTech headers were used during engineering, so I bought DynaTechs; when I ordered the BAER brakes I ordered custom 18" wheels to fit. Additionally, going from a "carbed" car with 40+yr old technology to modern tech caused some delays in fabrication (new wiring harnesses thruout the car, tossing factory A/C and going with modern A/C)... otherwise, very straight forward.https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/IMG_6686JPG-1.jpg
HOW DID YOU SOLVE THEM?: By having a great builder, excellent project planning, and a LOT of patience!!!(..and overtime at work to pay the price!)
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE DIYer's?: Come up with a plan and try to stick to it! (Boy did I have a lot of "something shiny caught my eye" moments). What started out as a "bolt-on" job for me turned into a full-rotisserie RESTO-MOD w/ Pro-touring vibe. Hind-sight being 20/20, I would WAIT to buy the motor until LAST (thanks for hanging onto it in your barn for six months Trav!). Additionally, look at the "fine details" that will have to go into the build to get it up-and-running, like wiring, gauges, fuel system, ECU mounting, etc... Lastly, DO YOUR HOMEWORK on great sights like this one! Talk with those that have "been there, done that"... You will find it makes life a lot easier in the end!

Bump.

I'm looking for someone with a first gen, ls, 4l80e. I would like to know which motor mounts and crossmember you used. I have found guys that build their own homemade stuff, but I Plan on buying a known combo that works out of the box.

Hey all, I just found this thread and thought I would share my recent LS swap experience aswell.

Car: 1977 Firebird Formula.
Motor: 5.3 Vortec with an Edelbrock RPM Performer carb conversion intake running a Holley 750.
Transmission: Stock Pontiac TH-350 with Trans Dapt bolt hole adapter plate.
Transmission Crossmember: Believe it or not, stock crossmember in the stock holes.
Fuel Tank: Stock.
Headers: Pace Performance long tube LS1 headers, driver's side collecter had to be cut, angled, and welded back in the right position.
Motor Mounts: 70 - 73 Camaro big block frame mount with Trans Dapt 1" setback plates on the engine.
Oil Pan: Right now, stock 5.3 truck pan, but I am getting a 98 - 02 F-body pan.
Stock/Modified/Replaced Subframe: Stock subframe, no modification.
Exhaust used: Custom 2.5" true dual glasspacks that dumps out before the rear tires.
Radiator Used: Stock 1977 Firebird radiator.
Wiring Harness: Stock 5.3 computer and harness that I depinned and removed any unused sensors and wires (this was a chore, about 5 hours of chasing wires).
What issues came up? Only issues were the driver's side header collector pointed towards the frame. Also I wans't entirely sure where to put the engine mounts on the frame.
How did you solve them? Cut and angles the collector and welded it back together so it was in line. I dropped the engine and trans in the car, bolted the transmission down, and tack welded the engine mounts where they sat once I leveled the engine. Then I raised the engine and finish welded the mounts in.
What advice would you give new LS swap DIY'ers? Patience deffinitely is numer one when trying to do this in 2nd gen F-bodies for sure. But if you do your homework, you will be just fine. I took about a week before going about the project to get all the parts and information I needed. If you are on a tight budget, it can be done!!! I did it. I have less than $1500 into the project right now. This might sound crazy to people on here, but it is true. I got lucky with the engine and only had to pay a couple hundred for it because I bought it out of a demo derby truck that broke before any damage actually happened to it. Junkyards will have engines out of wrecked trucks or cars for fairly cheap, just got to find them.

Tank:Spectra FI fuel tank Part #GM201FI
Headers: Stock manifolds
Motor mounts: Dirty Dingo
Exhaust: Custom 2.5"
Radiator: Factory LS1 with Fans and A/C condenser
Wiring harness: Modified factory harness

Issues: Used a relocator kit for the ac compressor to move it up high to keep from cutting the cross member.
Modified an air cleaner base to make the shaker functional.
Shortened a factory 79 auto driveshaft (auto has the same spline count as the T56)

Tips: Keep it simple to keep the cost down. I bought my motor/trans for $3200 - sold 79 motor/trans for $1900. Probably ended up with $3000 in incidentals to make everything work. I chose to hold off on cams / headers and other performance stuff until the project was done. I was unsure of what glitches I would run across and didn't want to compound it with modifications.

CAR: 70 SS/RS
ENGINE: 04 GTO LS1 (42k miles $3200)
TRANNY: t-56 (c/l 900 as an lt1, converted it 400, rebuilt to Magnum 1700)
TANK: Ricks tanks $1100
HEADERS: Dynatech ceramic $670 Summit
MOTOR MOUNTS: trans'adapt iirc, bout 125
OIL PAN: 4th gen camaro
SUB FRAME: stock
EXHAUST: full Dynatech s/s $779 Summit
RADIATOR: from my sbc, with a Loooong hose
WIRING HARNESS: made from the GTO, wire by wire by CJ's Garage in Livermore, CA
ISSUES: first issue was the GTO accessory mounting places the alternator too low, i changed to a firebird pitman arm only a temporary fix till i figure out what suspension/clip to go with. Second issue first set of headers sent by Summit were mis-part numbered, went back, ended up with the Dynatechs, now the collector is at 2 1/4" , too low imo. Third, engine mounts were too low. Fourth, input shaft in tranny wasn't shimmed correctly so it wouldn't shift right. Fourth, drive shaft may be too short, have a driveling shimmy at 65 to 75. Fifth, Sprectre tank, leaked (from factory) and fuel pump was insufficient as fuel pressure would drop to 18-20 psi with a 1/2 tank when you hammered it. Took it out, replaced it with Ricks tank (highly recommenced, i had a manufacturing issue internally with the tank and i bought it second hand and they took care of it, i paid shipping and it was out for two weeks). Sixth, several different tunes, we thought it was the GTO computer (which had an auto behind it) didn't like the t-56, cost three weeks (delay) of trying to figure it out, turned out to be the fuel pump and lack of baffling in the Sprectre tank..

So, the Dynatechs will go byby, just too low, will work better for a later model 2nd gen, going with the new Hooker set up, plus that will help my driveline angle. My steering doesn't work when jerked, so new steering box, lines and pump will be on its way, but the dilemma is i may have to order a whole new accessory package as i've been told the GTO accessory package wont work the new steering pump. So we'll see...

Car: 69 Camaro
Motor: 2003 LQ4 416, Holley HP EFI, Procharged
Transmission: Keisler TKO600, 681 bellhousing, mcLeod RST twin Clutch and aluminum LS flywheel
Transmission Crossmember:stock keisler TKO from my previous BBC swap
Fuel Tank: tanks inc. fuel injection tank

Motor Mounts: my old mounts that came original with the car 307 SBC and hooker 12611 ls mounts
Oil Pan:ATS road race Oil pan
Stock/Modified/Replaced Subframe: stock subframe, full ridetech front/back with electric coilovers
Exhaust used: magnaflow 3" with custom routed rear, stainless steel
Radiator Used: 2 row aluminum with electric fans but no LS radiator just the one i had before on my 540bbc
Wiring Harness: american autowire
Steering: Steeroids Rack&pinion

What issues came up? almost straight forward just had to replace the tall ls covers with some holleys cause they didnīt clear the alternator mount, carb sits high due to the intake.
couldnīt believe that the steeroids cleared everything perfect but iīm glad for that cause i had to modify headers and oil pan on my bbc a lot. Most people run dumps on the ridetech/dse kits and it needs some time to figure out the exhaust but it is doable. but we also put some Mopar into the build and routed the exhaust into the lower tailpanel where we used the old panel/taillight area to mirror the taillights for the exhaust.

What advice would you give new LS swap DIY'ers? Do it right the 1st time....i trashed 1000īs of dollars just with cheaping out and realizing that it just wonīt work plus rather save some bucks and stop the build for a while instead of messing it up trying to get done afap.

Car: 72 Trans Am "tribute built my way" (build underway)
Motor: 06 LQ9, moderate cam, kept truck intake. truck intake flows better than LS1, and about same as LS6. plan to shave/smooth/paint intake, install shaker on top and make functional. truck intakes will clear stock 2nd gen TA/firebird hoods. LS6 intake looks cooler, but it'll be covered anyway and for $300-500 less. my plan later is to maybe stroke the LQ9 and install better heads, or put it in my 68 SWB fleet and drop in a LQ4 w/ a turbo.
Transmission: 2000 Camaro T56, rebuilt.
Transmission Crossmember: Stock Modified, cut off mount, flipped, added 3/4" extension and welded. this is a easy modification that requires no need for a $250+ custom piece.
Fuel Tank: plan to use factory tank w/ vetteworks 4th gen pump conversion kit and factory gauge sender.
Headers: Speed Engineering, SS, 1-3/4" primarys $269 and they will fit a 2nd gen without modification. $600-$1000 for 2nd gen swap headers, WOW
Motor Mounts: made my own adapters from templates found all over LS sites. simple.
Oil Pan: 4th gen
Stock/Modified/Replaced Subframe: stock, made my own subframe connectors, got ideas from sites, designed like DSE, made 4 bolt flat flanges for connectors and rear of subframe so it can still be removed.
Exhaust used: 4th gen Speed Engineering headers, they'll fit without modification, X-pipe, magnaflow transverse SS muffler.
Radiator Used: not there yet, prob use AFCO universal, gonna use 4th gen dual fan setup.
Wiring Harness: modified my own using tutorial from LT1swap.com Going with mailorder tune initally, and will get dyno tune later.
Brakes: Blazer rear disc conversion (see NastyZ28 forum for tutorial) for less than $150 and fabbing an electric E-brake setup to get rid of the awkward 2nd gen pedal placement issue.
What issues came up? none so far i can't solve.
How did you solve them? the wiring harness was intimidating at first until you dig into it, and follow the tutorial. having auto electric knowledge helps. i am a Industrial Instrument Tech so i deal with this everyday.
What advice would you give new LS swap DIY'ers? unless you have very limited skills and/or lots of cash, read, read, learn, and do as much as you can yourself. this conversion will eat your pockets out. i bought my 06 LQ9 drop out with 62K miles for $1200, and i will have at least that much more in just the engine before i'm done. LS swaps are not cheap, but the benefits of having a powerful, fairly fuel efficient, fun driver is worth it to me. i had a 71 TA years ago with a 455/400 setup and it bested 12MPG so again it is worth it.
My goal is 400-425 hp, T56, 3:43 gears - no track time, just fun street cruising with enough Torque to have a blast on the street.

Looking for some info on how people adapted the 4th gen radiator to fit the 2nd gen. My present radiator is an aluminum off eBay and it has a small crack in the upper driver side. I probably can fix it but was looking at just scraping it. I am leaning towards the 4th gen due to price and it is design/proven to work for the engine. The radiator fill on the 4th gen is tilted and some people say it hits the hood. To the people using it...did you tilt your radiator? Custom mounts to lower the radiator? Thanks for any info.

Issues: Had to cut the factory trans tunnel to get the motor/tranny to set at the 3 degree or less angle, with my setup the best I could have gotten was 7 degree. No idea how anyone would be able to get a T56 magnum tranny into a 1st gen without cutting the tunnel. Even if I could have lowered the crossmember on the front subframe the oil pan and headers would have been very low to the ground. So my advice is if you want to do your install right and have the motor/tranny at the right angle plan to cut the tunnel. I also the the Ridetech tru-turn setup and everything clears along with my Power Steering pump.

What advice would you give new LS swap DIY'ers? Buy as complete as a motor / system as you can, don't piece anything together. The small stuff will nickle and dime ya.

I wouldn't do a 4th gen radiator swap, I tried that route when I first got into my LS swap...didn't like it. Plus the neck looks weird at an angle. I seen where one person tilted theirs back and made a cover between the header and radiator...didn't look that great.

I'm using a cheap ebay special aluminum 3 row stock replacement and haven't had any issues with cooling. I have 4th gen dual fans installed and steam vent tapped into the water pump. The 4th gen fans almost fall into place, I just had to take some L brackets to clamp up the bottom. And screw the top in.

Beautiful job as I checked what you started with! How's the spectra tank working for you? Did u make changes ? Or is it the way it came from spectra? Thanks

Thanks! The tank is as it came from spectra. Honestly it's working fine for me....this is the 2nd version with a better baffling for the pump. I know the original version had issues with fuel starvation. But I'm happy with mine.
