Long story short, I'm getting parking tickets for a car I traded into Irvine BMW in 2007! Everything has been fixed recently at the DMV but these *****s at the City of Los Angeles didn't get past tying their shoes in preschool. Anyway, I've sent in proof that it's not my car. It's up to 6 or so tickets now. Do these *****s really put collections on your credit report?

Not good, I had the same problem UNTIL the car was impounded, then they called me to pay to bail the car out, I told them to keep it instead. They then auctioned it off! LOL Problem went away!!

Release of Liability form and transfer form is sellers resposibility. If you have saved a copy, then you should not have a problem as long as the DMV shows filling on prior dates to the tickets. Your car insurance will handle any litigation as long as the car was insured with them at time of transfer and as long as proper paper work was filed. Either way, PITA, when you did your part and you still have to prove your case.

Hey Brett, That was the problem, somehow Irvine BMW didn't submit the release of liability in 2007. It's fixed now with the CA DMV but I sent in the release and explanation last month but they said it wasn't soon enough. They want me to pay the 6 tickets and counting and THEN go to trial. ha ha I googled these guys and it seems this isn't uncommon. Thanks for the insurance info.

Todd, The DMV doesn't mess around. I had a similar situation a few years ago and they took the money from my bank account. So don't just blow it off. I would make it Irvine BMW's problem. Contact the general manager there and ask them to pay the tickets and appear in court to resolve it. After all, it was there DMV clerk that didn't file the paperwork.

I would go after Irvine BMW because it was them that dropped the ball. I have a friend that his El Camino was stolen and used to joyride, it was reported stolen the next morning. The City of Los Angeles wrote parking tickets on it for three days before someone finally turned it in as a stolen. My friend had to pay the tickets even though the first ticket was written after the police report was taken. Parking tickets is a racket.

They will garnish your wages and it will go on your credit as a ding. L.A. s broke and they will do anything for money right now. They have even went as far as changing parking signs in the middle of the night, towing the cars then charging excessive tow/storage fees. They do it in prominent neighborhoods because they know they will gold card the car out.

The dealership didn't follow through on their end of the DMV paperwork. I would contact DMV, speak with a manager, and they will most likely investigate the salesman that did the long page on it. Once you issue a ROL you're not liable for anything to do with that car, and the ROL is done by the salesman. Let me know what they say, I've been around car sales my whole life and know all the scams.

Thats why I always send in the original and make a copy myself. Dealers are always f in something up.

Document all the other complaints and go from there. I know you have a lawyer friend, have him send a letter to the dealers sales manager. I sure the courts would throw it all out as soon as they see the docs.

To follow up on my previous comments, I too learned about the liability paper and also learned you are to remove the plates from the car before handing it over. A dealer won't like that but that's what DMV explained I should do in the future. I contacted DMV and the police explaining my situation and they did not pursue the tickets, lucky I guess, Santa Ana though. I did however, do the rest I previously said and they lost the car to auction. Lesson learned, glad you brought it up for those not yet taken advantage of by an irresponsible dealership or private party sale.

Wow, this isn't making me feel to warm and fuzzy. By the way, I'm in Nevada so I'm not sure if it changes things? Great suggestions here guys. Anybody know a good ticket attorney in CA just incase I strike out?

You wont need that. Like I said, contact the DMV, they have officers that deal with this specifically. If you have any cop friends have them run the plate, it should come up with Release Of Liability on date X/X/X with a Registration In Progress as of X/X/X, anything other than that is a felony, and THE quickest way to lose your car sales license permanently. You're not responsible for a car that isn't yours.

That's where it gets tricky. They claim I was issued a CA plate in 2004 when I purchased the car. I did pay the registration fee but I obtained plates in Nevada. I'll contact the DMV and Irvine BMW again.

Sounds like the City of LA has started to employee Nigerian's to handle their parking ticket issues.....Once they get a hold on you they will stop at nothing to get your money. I had the same issue as you did with a plate from a car I sold over 15 year prior!!! I think they start contacting all former owners to attempt collections. I was lucky and have legal benefit through work and also hold a security clearance. Both of these helped but the clearance was the biggest help, security at work took it over as an "attempt to extort" when you maintain a clearance attempting extort a person does not sit well with the DOD, DIS, FBI and my programs.

Funny thing the plate was on a 69 Chevelle that I sold, the car with the tickets was an 80's model Toyota. Come to find out it had been stolen for years and the plate used to register it was the Chevelle plate which was removed from the Chevelle when the owner that bought it from me attained vanity plates. It was my understanding that the DMV collected your old plate. Turns out they did not and the old plate was tossed in the trash.....lesson learned there for sure!!
