I figured it was about time to post a few pics of my '70 'Cuda. This has been a LONG term work in progress, but it's finally ready for paint. When I got the car, I was only going to do a cosmetic resto and do a mild 340 Six Pak setup. Although it was a solid California car, I found some filler in the quarters and decided to strip it down.

I wanted to redo the suspension, and looked at several aftermarket K-frames. They could not fix the positive camber issue on compression. The best they could do was stay neutral, but won't gain negative. This was years before XV so I built a jig off a Corvette and decided to adapt it. It was important to me to keep the car a unibody if for nothing else purity. It would have been SOOOO much easier to just build a frame for it.

Very nice! I like how you ran the bars on the "outside" of the tub so they wouldn't be visible from the engine bay.

Very clean and thorough build. Can't wait to see more.

Also, what is the 3rd Master Cylinder for?

Thanks, I'll post a few more then.

I'm using a Wilwood bias bar brake pedal that uses independent master cylinders for front and rear brakes (allows tailoring MC piston) and the other is the clutch. I'm using a Rockland TKO II with a Mcleod dual disc clutch.

Heres a few of the cage. Sucked it up into the roof and against the A-pillars. I will widen the trim to make the cage disappear. The side X-bars are removable and still legal.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/02/100_0866-1.jpg

in this one you can see I matched the angle of the B pillar to make the cage less noticable
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/02/100_0836-1.jpg

This shows the seat structure. Rules mandate seats much attach to the cage. This was my solution. Cage has been tech'd and passed.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/02/100_0835-1.jpg
The upper link (used under braking) runs through a tunnel that connects to the cage structure.

The trunk area houses the fuel cell. It sits flush to the trunk floor, but cannot be seen hanging down. I hate seeing a square box hanging under a curvy car!

Yeah that thing hanging out the back is a 'chute mount. I will run the car at Bonneville when it's done.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/02/100_0773-1.jpg

But in keeping with my stock looking 'Cuda theme, I wanted to hide the 'chute mount. For you guys that have 'Cuda's, you already know how bad the bumpers fit. I cut mine apart and widened/contoured it to fit the car. These pics show the start, but still have alot of work left to make it fit right.

I lowered and flattened the rockers 1", widened the lower front fenders 1" per side, and tig'd a rod on every gap and filed them back.

Plans are a nice driver that can run 250 mph at Bonneville, keep up with a Z06 through the twisties, and run at least an 8 in the quarter. The car is a compromise. It will do everything good, but not exceptional in any one area. First and foremost a comfortable driver. The suspension is more road coarse than drag race, and being comfortable makes it heavy. My great equalizer is 1500 HP. Running turbos lets me dial that way back for street use and road course.

It seems that everyone has this perfect Dodge or Plymouth truck in a barn or garage that is always 50 miles from where they live. They never have a digital camera, camera phone, or have knowledge of how any modern technology works. They are never proficient with computers, but they figured out how to join a message board, post an ad and then jerk you around for weeks about a part or vehicle. So, no, have not got any word on the grille. He is supposed to go to Mayberry and borrow a camera from Barney. I know you know what I mean!

Definitely interested in the fender...and my progress on the truck is about the same as when you were here last!! Thanks for pulling the glass.

Thanks.
I've mocked this thing up probably 3 times to make sure I didn't have issues. It has full turning radius and compression even when the exhaust pipes in the fender. I built the bump outs and exhaust with the front suspension on, at full lock, and full compression. If it hits now, It wants to worse than I don't, so I'll just let it!!

Thanks, again

Yours is way cool. I don't know if I'm further along or not, sometimes it feels I'm barely half their, then I put it all together to check fitment, etc... and then tear it back down again!!

I see your running a Gen I R5. I looked at an R5 for my build, but chose an R3 block instead. Are you comfortable throwing turbo cylinder pressure on those tiny rod and main journals? They are great for reduced friction and bearing speed, but sacrifice load carrying ability. That's what scared me. I went wayyy the other way with a tall deck 360 main R3. I'll limit my rpm to compensate for increase bearing speed. The R5's look cool as hell, though!

Hey Craig,
Thanks for the compliment! Hang in there, your doing great work, I know how you feel sometimes and its easy to get burnt out ya know! Sometimes you have to walk away and "regroup".

The R5 is definitely a cool motor, but like anything there are always some drawbacks. There have been numerous successful twin turbo builds from Radrides, jesel, etc with these motors. and I feel done right and in the right components, everything should be fine. Its funny, Ill end up doing almost everything opposite of parts that this motor originally intended to have in it haha.

Its funny you say that you went with the R3. My father just finished the build on his 440ci stroked R3. There are a few more pics in my thread and if you ever have any questions about his build just let me know and I can tell you the route he went!

You said you wiped the welds? Does that mean the welds are bondoed over or ???

Yes, I DO NOT grind welds. If it is a good weld, it lays down really pretty. I just apply a small finger wipe of filler over the welds to make it appear to be a one piece stamping. It is just a light skim coat, so it won't crack or come loose. This was only on the body, not the cage (not legal). On any area that might flex, I use a flexible sandable seam sealer.

This is a HUGE undertaking, something I sometimes think took longer than the actual exterior body work. I don't know if I would ever do it again!! I'll have pictures from paint next week, and I'll see if it was all worth it!!

It is absolutely a driver. You will never see this thing parked with a lawn chair in front of it! I just figured if your going to paint anyway, why not try and do the best job capable? I went a little overboard with the bottom, but I was single at the time and had lots of time!!!! Besides, panel gaps and straight panels have always been a pet peeve of mine.

I hope it gets some magazine interest so I can have the nice paint saved in print photos, but this thing WILL go to Bonneville where the salt at speed will sand blast the paint, and see lots of street and track time where the bottom and front will see a beating. I just wanted to say I did the best I could with it at the time. If the paint gets scratched and chipped, so be it. I don't like when it happens on my late model daily driver either, but it is a fact of life. What's the point of owning it if you don't drive it, and I mean drive it to its potential.

Had a few days to look at the color it in different lighting. Spray out cards are only so useful, sometimes you just have to see it on the car. Guess what, I didn't really like the side tone. Matt came up with a slight variant that "cleaned it up", and we knocked the car back down with 800 and resprayed!!

It's hard to say,but it appears that new color is more richer and not as pastel. It shouldn't matter who like or don't like the color,as long as you are happy, that's all that matters. You could paint it baby-poo color and it would still be a bad-ass car.I was just saying that it's a lot of work to prep and re-shoot for only a minor tweak in color, but it's better to do it now then after the whole car is shot.

Thanks Stefan. Can you send me a color chip of baby-poo?

Thanks.

The rear is a decoupled three link with a torque arm. You can see the tunnel for the upper link in the bottom pictures of the car. You probably already know, but I still have some ask, "what's that?" The torque arm is short moving the IC high to really load the rear on acceleration, but so short that it would hop the rear on braking. The upper link is used under braking and compresses to move the IC forward and low to load the rear. The rearend "floats" between this two links but have bushings to tailor preload. And your right, the bracket is the adjustable Watts link that adjust the roll center.

Thanks

Thanks for the great explanation, it's funny you should be running that set up. I've been doing calculations on torque arm set ups for the last few months because of the great geometry and packaging, I'll be watching your progress even closer now.

It's nothing new for sure. This is stuff that was proven in the now defunk Trans-Am series. Herb Adams had an old book called Chassis Engineering back in the day you might like. That stuff it still very useful today. Computer programs just made it easier to do calculations with kinetic and finite analysis. It's still four wheels and a sprung chassis. The parts get tricker and better but you still have to know how to tune them as a combination.

I chose this type of suspension because it most closely resembles what I drive. It was the best unrestricted designed suspensions for high horsepower/heavy cars. Current Grand Am stuff is a place to look for parts/setups. I stay away from the Nascar stuff because it is a rule restricted suspension setup. It is the best it can be to meet rules, but far from ideal.

Very cool Camaro. Thats what I would have built if i hadn't worked at a Chrysler dealer the last 20 years! Big Red was what got me into pro touring and away from pro street.

Making progress. Almost done with paint.
Just got my Holley Dominator EFI stuff and am in the mist of conversion. Haven't ran the engine on anything but a dyno and already updating! That's what sucks about a project taking so long. That's why I kept the body and mods subtle so a trick of the week wouldn't date the car.

No, both are fuel. 66lbs. on the bottom and 120lbs. on top. This is a staged injection (Holley Dominator EFI). It will spend 99% of it's life on the 66's, but will use both at Bonneville and the Monster Mile.

If i remember right, An R1,R3,R4,and an R5 are Mopar race engine blocks. W2, W5, W8, W9 are Mopar cylinder heads. Some Craftmans Truck, some drag race. R3's are production based dimensions and were developed for the original Craftmans truck series trucks before they switched to Cup engines, R4's are production based but can accept different heads, and R5's are current Sprint Cup engines and drag race engines in hemi head config (P-heads).

The fittings bring coolant from the back of the heads to the front of the engine to equalize coolant temps. I also tap the side of the block between the center cylinders and run water direct from the pump. On Mopars, you need to route the water from the bottom, outside of the cylinder block and force it evenly into the cylinder heads, straight up.

IndyDave
12-31-2012, 07:53 PM
Yes, "R" stands for "race block". "W" stands for "wedge" and refers to the combustion chamber shape of the cylinder head. Add to the alphabet soup, there's also "P" for "polysphere" as in the P7 NASCAR cylinder head.

The R3s allow the 6 bolt per cylinder sealing, so in that repsect they are superior.

Finally got the rear setup and together.

I had started this project with a different engine combo, so I installed a 3.91 gear long ago. The new engine combo needs a 3.07.

This is an XP 9310 from Richmond. They made these for the Cup teams on the super speedways. They are a 9310, but heat treated to be softer for durability. Perfect for a track day/daily driver/Bonneville car!

The hubs are Moser GN's with Wide Five bearings. I bought these complete and discovered they loaded them with Chinese bearings. Not real happy about that. Timken makes a low drag, REM bearing set.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/03/file_zps27efed4c-1.jpg

I bolted the hubs down without the oil seal and no grease in the bearings. I'm looking for .001 end play as measured on the centerline.

Just found this thread! WOW!!! great build, LOVE IT!

Thanks! Hoping to get the time to throw the suspension under it and get it as a roller. The engine kinda threw me a snag. I decided to go dry sump at the last minute. Now if it was a Chevy, I'd run down to 7eleven and buy what I needed. Being a Mopar sucks sometimes. I had to change the balancer out to a Chevy front so I could get a drive mandrel to fit. Pump mounting is another issue. NO ONE makes anything for a Mopar. I had Bill at Dailey Engineering make a pump for the engine with the correct bracket to my custom bracket. I cannot recommend them highly enough. Their stuff is no more expensive than anyone else, yet he will make sure you get what you need because everything is custom made. For anyone entertaining a dry sump setup, check them out. http://www.daileyengineering.com

Massaged. Reversed tubbed. Mopar wheel houses roll in steeply and don't let you push the tire out and lower the car.

Exhaust runs through the fender and back into the engine compartment and then under the car.

No and no. C4 gen 2 Corvette. One of the best KPI angle spindles and pretty easy retrofit. The only negative (pun!) is lack of negative camber adjustment which is easily fixed when building the jig. Doesn't gain negative camber as well as C5 or C6, but C4's will easily do 1.1G on a skid pad with 200 tires and coil over conversion. You will need to build a custom K frame and custom lower control arms (pickup points the same), and everything in between!

Okay, a little whinny, just get nervous with the time and money involved that in the end it becomes a polished turd. I value the opinions on this board, and when you don't get any, you start to think, "maybe my car sucks!". It is some how different when it's your own car.

The torque arm will be very much beefed. It's short because I can decouple and not worry about brake hop, but can get stupid forward bite...maybe too much. I'll be bugging the crap out of Ron when this thing is running for setup advice.

A car like this needs a CF torque arm.

By eyeball, the front coilover angle "seems" rather steep, was that by choice or necessity?

The SPC upper arms look nice, and if I looked closer the answer might be obvious, but because they have no longitudinal member connecting the front and rear swivels together, seems like a lot of forces are redirected that an OEM control would not generate, a solution would be? beefier, as needed, mounting swivel points, and wonder if this was a concern, or did you already account for this in your relocated pickup points?

Does a decoupled stout torque arm ever make anyone uneasy if say it snagged anything at speed, ala the pole vault driveshaft scenario?

Not familiar with CF. What is that?

It is a little steep, but within 20 degrees of swing. My choices were to move further inboard on the control arm, which would require quite a bit more spring rate, or angle and stay at the end which would require less spring rate.

I think I understand the question. Are you referring to the control arms themselves? I am only using these for setup. Once I have the desired geometry and alignment, I'll build a solid set.

Makes me nervous as well. I'll have a through bolt from the mount into the forward part of the TA. Loose enough to allow decoupling, but tight enough to hold the arm should the upper link fail.

I always build stuff too tight and don't take into account for paint or powder coat. I have scratched it up here and there, but just going to brush touch and keep rolling. I'll probably cry after what Bonneville will do to the paint...but still going!

Also those upper control arms that you have are great and I would not get rid of them. A control arm only needs to be strong in tension and compression in directions from the ball joint to the control arm mounts. You have tons of adjustability with those so you can dial in geometry

I really don't want anything else hanging even lower on the car. The arm doesn't move a lot. It is preloaded between the brake and TA bushing. It basically compresses the bushing to change I/C angles, so were only talking about a 1/2" max travel. I'm comfortable with a 5/8" grade 8 through bolt with a Stover nut...okay, I may add a piece under the mount to "catch" the TA if the bolt fails!

Your well within what an aluminum through bolt will handle and not deform enough to make any difference. Pro Stock cars use the aluminum as well, but trade weight for gear longevity, etc. Big torque and heavy cars can really deform the aluminum case with shock loads and under full power. Your car is going to be heavy, like it or not! I don't think I'd be concerned even running a Strange "street" aluminum center on your power. Your AWD and splitting that TQ anyway.

I'm keeping this a driver. It is a touch high compared to other makes, Mopars have lots of crap below the pinch rail making them hard to slam, but I am taking advantage of that. The belly pan will extend to the front for the splitter and out the sides to make the side splitters. The rocker extensions tuck under the rocker rail and support the belly pan/side splitters. These parts are all flat black, so it will make the car appear to sit lower and kinda disappear keeping the stock 'Cuda appearance I'm going for. The pan/splitters are about as low as you can go and still street drive.
I personally like a larger profile tire on these cars, still makes them look like muscle cars IMO. I'll have a track setup, including wheels/tires that will be a lower profile and lower suspension settings.

However that lightened Ring gear also looks a little fragile 1500hp? shocks, IMO. and has also got to be a trade off/compromise, like everything else. lol.

Didn't go for the lightened ring gear. In fact, had to buy the gear from JGR's inventory of gears not yet CNC'd for material removal.

This car will never have the boost turned up to those HP numbers except at the monster mile and Bonneville, easing into the throttle, no shock loads. The rest of the time it will loaf along at 7 psi on 91 octane...which should be good for 700-ish HP.

Just flipped through your thread for the first time in a while. Always good to keep up with what I could see on the streets locally. I'd agree with your larger tire sidewall choice myself for around here if you're gonna drive it. You could always later make some simple extended rocker covers to give a slightly lower appearance if you wanted without scacrificing driveability . Extended the lower body on my project.

I noticed several times you mentioned wishing you'd changed a number of things or not fully happy with this or that, etc. Such is the curse of a skilled builder and not being fully happy with the end product still usually results in something people break their necks to see. You're doing great, just don't tell yourself that yet.

Way ahead of you. Already have the rocker extensions that attach the sides of the belly pan. I like the ride height, but in reality is much lower due to the pan, side splitters, and front splitter.

Thanks. I'm still not even 100% that I like the color, stance, wheel position, etc... I'm just going to keep going together and see what turns out. Even if I hate it, it is my E ticket down the flats, and that is worth the effort.

Been working on a customer car, so the 'Cuda has been sulking under a cover for the last few weeks. Did manage to hang the doors today. The effort in body work on gaps and panel alignment is finally paying off.

Been working on this:

Yes and no. It's a '70 RR that I built an SRT inside of. Never posted it here because it will be basically a stock SRT8, not really a pro-tourer. Here's the thread: http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=7354411&page=0&fpart=all&vc=1

Haven't had much time to mess with either car, but did start on the spoiler and bumper.

The spoiler will be a functional piece with an inner structure that will allow attachment of different wicker bills. (sketch from Jeff at Munssey Speed and Design)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/01/file_zps655ac117-1.jpg (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/340cuda/media/file_zps655ac117.jpg.html)

I started with an AAR spoiler for a plug. Had to cut it into 6 pieces to get it to fit the trunk. This is in progress and doesn't show the body work to finish the spoiler.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/03/file_zps108c259e-1.jpg (http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/340cuda/media/file_zps108c259e.jpg.html)

Jeff Munssey at Munssey Speed and Design (Jeff, these are coming your way shortly!!) will use my spoiler for a plug and then layup the piece with the aluminum inner structure and finish in carbon fiber. This can be made in fiberglass as well if anyone is interested. I'm going to have him use my bumper as a plug too. It's the only bumper that will actually fit the contours of a 'Cuda. Metal would be too expensive, so the bumpers will be available in carbon fiber or fiberglass if anyone wants one of those. Just contact Jeff Munssey at Munssey Speed and Design (a member here).

Did finish the bumper and put it in a black "show coat" to find imperfections. Calling it done.

The valance isn't bolted in the middle which is why it's sticking out past the bumper.

At least from the view of the concept pics, the extended bodywork does look good & the shape looks like it really should aggressively help give you some needed down force.

I remember in our previous discussion on your body work, you were wanting to go with a less pronounced look rather than fattening out the body as I did. The side profile will loose some of it's long sleek look , but I think it will look really badass regardless.

May I also suggest the window trim & bumpers either be some form of black to dark grey also? Think those details would look more fitting & less out of place with the new high tech race look.

Just my honest thoughts. I likes.

This car has been back burner so long that I almost don't pay it any attention. I use the excuse of have so much going on with work that I don't have time to finish it. Truthfully, I realized it wouldn't have the performance potential that I am wanting with the crazy evolution of the PT scene, and that has kept my motivation to finish pretty low. Working the Daytona OUSC event last year showed me what was to come. It was either put it together and be less than pleased with performance, or stop, make some significant changes and be forever trying to reach the cars performance potential. I'm choosing the latter, and in reality will make the car easier to finish and package. I said from day one, putting a frame under it would have been 100 times easier than trying to retain the unibody and make it look like the factory built it that way.

jlcustomz

I hear ya Craig. While busy at work is still a truly good excuse, trying to be in the competitive end of things these days is still changing about as fast as new cell phones.
Are you think about something like a Schwartz performance frame?

Also not sure where you're at on this subject, but extraction vents in hoods & fenders is gaining even more new car popularity , due to it's benefits. I recently got off early one day & got 2 pairs of old c-3 vette lower fender vents from Larry's salvage for 30 bucks. May modify & integrate into my hood. If I can see my reinforced fiberglass hood flex at highway speeds on a windy day with fender vents, then a little more air relief is in order. Cudas definitely appear to also need some help in this area.
Anvil auto is one of the popular sources of a simple add on.
