View Full Version : Anyone use L and R Backing Plates for LS1 Conversion on 2nd Gen F-Body?

I just got a complete brake kit from an LS1 F-body and I was reading that with the staggered shocks on the 2nd gen F-bodies that I would need to run two left side backing plates. I am no completely opposed to doing it this way, mostly because it sounds like it is the only way. I just don't like the idea of the brakes not being symmetrical. Has anyone used a Left and Right side assembly on a 2nd gen F-body with success? If you have done this please post pictures or give me a link.
I have also heard that some people have relocated their factory shock to accommodate this modification, but have been advised against this.
Thanks,
Ryan

I did this on my car. I added a mount directly to the bottom of the axle tube on both sides and was able to sqeeze the shock in between the tube and the caliper on the driver side. The mount was a piece of square tube with a 3" diameter cutout so I could weld it to the tube. The ends were capped out and I drilled them out so I could put a 5/8 bolt through it. The shocks are not stock but instead has the spherical joint for mounting so I just bolted it to the end of the square tube. You could also do this with a rubber shock mount too. I was able to untilize the stock upper mount location but modified it for the spherical mount only because that was my previous shock setup. Previously I mounted them both inboard and behind the axle using DSE plates. The wheel hop was out of control. With the revised mounting I roast the tires but hop is no longer an isuse. I don't have pics right now but will try to post some when I get home.

Did you have any problems with wheel hop?

I haven't went for a test drive yet my car is still in the build stages, but it has 1/4in Clarence of any moving part and the nice thing is it was very easy to make the e break work

Gm did it on the early 3rd gens with no issues. I put a set on a 2nd gen in a staggered fashion, but had to make several modifications to get it to work right. Most of that was due to the 9" being narrowed though.

Would you be able to move the shock inward, while retaining the stock position on the body, but having a different mounting location on the rear end? What would that affect?

Would that work?

This is an older post (Wow! I can't believe it's been almost 3 years!!), but...

I REALLY gotta get back on this car...
BTW- I LOVE 76's! My first car was a 76 455 4 spd white on blue. I also had a 76 400 AT black on black.

Oops... just noticed you said LS1. I used C5 Vette stuff, but it's real similar.

Would that work?
Moving it slightly wouldn't hurt anything, considering the rubber mounting of most shocks.

I haven't actually gotten under the car so I am not even sure if moving the shock inward would be enough to clear the caliper and avoid buying another complete right side. I will get under my car soon and see if it is possible and I will keep the thread updated.
