Hi my name is Eric hokenson I have been in and out of this fourm for a while now and I would like to start this thread over to focus on just the belair.
What is the plan? the plan is to build one of the best built cars on a buget that I possibly can out of my home shop with very little farmed out.
motor currently a 5.3 just removed the supercharger to build a custom twin turbo system.
Who is E.rodz customs? this is just myself an Aprentice and my son. Hobby shop NOT a business!
I am not a spammer not looking for business just want to share my success or failure with you guys and it could go either way.
A different way that I have never tried and so far it has been a blast. is to drive the car as much as possible during the build so far I have racked on about 12,000 miles on the car.
Please join me on a quest to make a family oriantated pro touring car that can and will drive accross the country and do well in all catagories.
WHATS UP WITH THE SIGNATURES?????????? Somewere along the way right after the motor was mocked up into the car I decided to start driving the car and because I do custom painting and airbrushing everyone just assumed that I had painted the car and it was done. This is not what I wanted I DID NOT PAINT THE CAR. I bought it painted this way and it will change. so the idea came up about having people write there Ideas of if they had a million dollers what whould you do to the car to make it the coolest car in the world?????????
A lot of people caught on and wrote some pretty cool and creative ideas.Alot of people are really brain dead.so with that said please join in with you tips, sugestions,Ideas,of what you think I should do with the car.give me input along the way good or bad!!
My original goal was 450 to the rear wheels and 20 mpg.
My new goal is 750 to the rear wheels,20 mpg.,reliable, comfortable and mind blowing body mods. I hope this catches your intrest. I will get the build picts. up to date then post up picts. as we go hope have you guys along for the adventure. If you would like to see more of my work check out my web site. www.erodzcustoms.com (http://www.erodzcustoms.com) just a man with big dreams!

the car came with a 350/350 combo.I was planing on building this up and running it until I bought a 5.3 ls based drivetrain out of a stolen suburban with only 1,800 miles on it complete and dollar for dollar there was now way to beat this.after I pulled the motor out freshed it up sqirted some paint on it . I pulled the 5.3 apart and was amazed on how much gm. improved the sbc. and I was hooked.sold the motor and tranny.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/01/020_6-1.jpg
kind of a waste of time but oh well.
still with the old motor in and running. I built a full air ride system on a budget. using a system of my friends s10. and I fabbed all the spring buckets. and relocated the shocks.still the car handled like a mush bucket.
so we decided to put some sway bars on it and add some disk brakes.seems easy enough.Along comes as well as we are at it we might as well do this.

ended up cutting the hell out of the frame to make the motor fit and get it as low as it should be. the good thing is the crossmember had plenty of weight to give up.

I know there is a build thread on another site - cant put my finger on where it is.
I remember a pic of an old school bridge with the car parked diagonally across it.
At least your making progress on yours - I am rolling around in a two toned bruise colored car.... LOL.

I also have a build thread on lateral g .and I started another a while back on this one but I just wanted to get things a little more in order .I thought it would be eiser to start over then try to fix the old one . I will find that pict. that you are refering to and post it up later. It is my favorite.

just wanted to post a few new updates. just finished a few weeks of thrashing to get everything ready to go on the power tour.well we finshed all the intercooler mounts, reworked all temp. piping changed to some 42# injectors.carl of cj tunes came over and tuned in,and we took the big gamble of doing are break in on the way to madison. at this point sleep was not an option. well for once everything worked out well and we made it to madison with no problems also pulled off 19 mpg.@75mph not bad ran a 31.4 in the autocross and a 13.8 qt. not bad for a huge boat. this is the best riding car ever. still have a long ways to go everything is still in mock up form and alot will be changed for final build.please let me know what you think.

First time show in America. Hosted at Brainerd international raceway in Minnesota. We went to the show not having any idea of what to expect. The trip up was a nightmare we pulled the pop up camper with the Belair with the bikes strapped to the back of the camper. the temps were in the high 90′s with not a cloud in the sky we did not even get 50 miles out when the trailer started bucking violently from side to side if we went anything over 55 mph. Then the fuel pump started to vapor lock the car died on the side of the road about 5 or 6 times packing ice around the pump would buy us about another twenty miles. A two and a half hr. drive turned into a 10 hr nightmare! My wife was not in a good mood at all the kids were also not so happy. Then we were shocked at the ticket prices there was a misunderstanding we thought when we pre registered at back to the fifties show we thought 130$ was the camping the car and the people in it . Wrong they wanted another 90$ apiece !I thought this was going to be a family event.$ 130 for the car and driver+90+90+90 wholy crap $400 for a weekend of play kind of nuts, but we were finaly there and the was no turning back now! set up camp and then passed out from exsaustion. soon to be woke up to a huge thunder and lightining storm mixed with huge winds five and a half inches of rain fell overnight and everything was like a big lake the car was parked in about 4 inches of water. Thinking to my self this is awesome. NOT! this sucks and nobody was in a good mood. we headed out to the track praying the fuel pump would work well it did and we had a frickin blast. we left the clamp on trailer mirrors on the car for entertainment purposes only the open cruising event turned into a full all out road race we had 4 people in the car ripping around the track passing people and just having a ball.lots to do and see burn out shows drifting, power skids, bikini contest.everyones mood was getting better by the minute there was not alot of people at this first time event so there was no waiting around for any event the day ended on a positive note and everyone had a great time. Later that night a trailer load of people showed up to check out the car a few of them were on the track earlier that day getting passed by a big orange belair with 4 people in the car and they were impressed and entertained at the same time. The car ran and handled awesome! sun.was a different story we went to head out on the track to get some videos on the road track driving experience and more gremlins showed up to the party the rear brakes started grinding and hanging up after scratching my head trying to figure out why they were grinding put some spacers in to center the pad basket better and went for a test drive and found out why fast! hit the gas and sheared the pinion shaft in half! huh thats bad! my nephew that came with us won a pair of subs.from a raffle ticket and shortly after we won the cruise event trophy and a hundred bucks. this helped with the towing bill to have the car hauled home on.What an adventure met some really fun and intresting people along the way. the event was really fun just a bit out of hand price wise hope they figure it out for next year because we would like to go try it again. Hopefully with a new rear end and more power!

funny thing is I had the new rear end before I went to Brainerd but did not have enough time to put it in.Thought it might be the week link I was right for once. Bought a moser fab 9 rear ended up trowing in a set of 3:55 gears and using a locker because I had it laying around.we will see how this goes.

The rear is 1 inch narrower on each side than the orig.so later I can buy deeper and wider wheels. sure makes things alot easier to change tires now just looks retarded.

Well we are almost up to date.shop and house are done enough to take a brake from them and get some work done on the car.so far we have racked up about 12,000 miles on the car in mock up form and I am having a awesome time enjoying driving the car throughout the build so far.Well now it is time we made some more changes and this is were the TWIN TURBO idea came in. the original goal of 400rwhp. and 20mpg.was easily obtainable so now the new goal is 650 rwhp and 20 mpg. reliability and complete steet manners.I hope to bring it to sema this year with the drivetrain done and hope to be able to compete in the optima street challenge.

We ended up going with the f body balancer and are making the brackets to run the alt. high on pass. side, air comp.low on pass. side, power steering and tensioner will be on the drivers side.

TWIN TURBOS HERE WE COME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Got to know a local co. and we started talking about twin turbos. after doing a bit of research we found out that there is alot of guys.running stock shortblocks upwards of 8oo hp. so I decided to go for it to hopefully reach a goal of 650rwhp. and 20 mpg. cruising.the guys over at Modern automotive preformance. http://www.maperformance.com hooked me up with a pair of precision turbos.and lots of other great parts to build a twin turbo set up.after getting alot of @$#! from everybody about if your going to do a twin turbo you need to atleast make 1000hp. Although I do think that is really cool to be able to do that easily I decided to go with something that is a little more driveable and something I can afford to put gas in.I drive the car alot and I love it when my family comes with to events.so this is the direction that we are going...Thanks to the guys over at Mapreformance for giving me the tech support that helped me out greatly.if anyone is looking for a good turbo insight these are your guys. you can contact them @763-545-3800.

Making more progress almost done with the hot piping!!!!!!! .this is taking forever.making something look asymmetrical when nothing is,proving to be one hell of a challenge. Having a huge motor bay is awesome but the space fills up so fast. Why is making something look simple so frickin complicated?
OOOHHHHYYYAAAAAAA almost done with the hot piping!!!
only a couple of days left to fire this up.just a few more things to do .
design and fabricate new core support.
design and fabricate new gas tank.
fabricate new fuel lines and return lines.
fabricate all new brake lines.
replace tranny and shorten driveshaft.
is there anything that I am forgetting?????????????

Did the guys as MAP also discuss with you possibly needing to re-map the fuel and timing curve? I'm guessing you're going to need at least 20+psi to get the added 250HP, but that's a lot more power than the supercharger was making for you and I'd be concerned that the current timing curve has too much advance in it currently to support the extra boost you'll need to reach your HP target. If your fuel mapping runs closed-loop at WOT, this too will need to be re-mapped to make sure you've not going to run the engine lean and burn it up on the first pass.

almost done with the hot piping. this has turned out to be a huge pain in the butt. making things look asymmetrical when nothing is, proved to be a bigger challenge than I had originally anticipated, but things are still moving forward I hope!!!!!

Well looks like the only thing I have to do is.
:fabricate a new core support.
:fabricate a new gas tank.
:fabricate cool side piping.
:fabricate new radiator shroud and mounts:fab. up a new a/c condensor mount.
:new tranny mount.
:rebuild transmission.
:shorten driveshaft.
:fabricate new tranny lines and cooler system.
:change out valve springs, replace head gaskets and put in studs, poss. pistons and rods.
:oil feed and return lines.
Should have it up and running by next week. LOL.

It is hard to tell from the pictures, but are your turbo's free standing, or did you make some mounts for them? I really like your craftsmanship, you are doing a good job making everything look symmetrical to me. I am thinking of going turbo in the future and I am just gathering ideas as I see them. Like the work.

Love the build and the turbos will work for great but only if u stay out of boost will u achieve the 20 mpg I think. Which is easy said than done because boost is so fun!!!!. My idea that could make this car coolest in the planet is two things. (its already awesome because u have a bike rack on the back)
A side exhaust. ( I just love that) and secondly.. fabbing up a match trailer. That could be awesome. Just an idea!!!

I love the twin turbo idea. Have you settled on wheels yet?
If I have a 4 door, I would probably suicide the rear doors, like the old Lincolns. Also, I would remove all emblems and trim on this one and paint it a solid color. I would put a body color matched full, smoothed metal console between bucket seats that complimented the body lines.

Really nice work. I have a 62 impala 4door sedan thatis waiting its turn to get the ls treatment. One thing I was wondering is if you will have enough air flow for the condensor sandwiched in the middle of the intercooler and the rad. I can tell you that when you run the a/c, the condensor needs some instant air running through it especially if the car is not moving like in traffic. The high side pressure rises very quickly and cooling can be dramatically hindered.

where did you plumb your oil lines from for the turbos? looks really sweet next to the intake... I forgot to take picts. of this but I used the orig.oil pressure sending unit busted the guts out of it then machined a slug with a 1/4 npt. thread in it and then welded it together and screwed a T into it. hope this helps.
Probably from the back of the block, where the original oil pressure sensor was located.

What to do ? go out and rob them off my truck double wrap them and tied them up.Wow what a difference 8 cylinders makes! car runs great.life is good seams like it all worth it now.

The car is cool, i am sure I have said that before. What is going on with the metal working tools and the door behind the car? Hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks like a cool shop.

ended up painting the dash, trim parts a flat black to cut down on the glare a bit and well this is were things can kick your ass the flat additive in the clear worked on half the stuff but not all of it some of it turned out shiny as can be??????? why I have no idea so ended up wet sanding everything and leaving it that way, Then thoughts about as long as I am here we might as well mount up the vintage air unit and paint the firewall and floorsoh and the door pannels look like crap a different color so we might as well paint those to ect ect.

wow were does the time go. we have been just pounding on the miles on the belair since back to the fifties. The Ron Francis wire works rewire job went great,as well as the Dakota Digital dash it is all programed in and ready for action, installed the vintage air unit under the dash and still have to hook up the hoses and the controler but it has been about time to go out and drive it!
Almost forgot we also installed some new Viking performance shocks dual adjustable rebuildable shocks!
what a difference they made!

When does the 68 get some attention?
the only time I had it to the track it ran a 12.3 best on pump gas 13# of boost the convertor is really holding it back bad my best 60 foot times were 2.3 after 30 ft the car really comes alive with a little more stall it would be in the high 11's on pump gas not bad for a big old boat. going on the power tour this year with it and there will be some big changes come spring. for now just going like crazy on the chevelle. you being a firebird owner should know it is NOT a 68 but this one is going to be awhile before I can get back to this one.this one is my favorite and I really want to keep this one!

oh it has been a while since the last update and I had to put the Chevelle on stand by .Time to change things up a bit really sick of the really ugly paint and the sharpie marker is really getting old but I have been enjoying the ride so much I just want to keep driving it so new tires and wheels or used wheels and new tires were in order so I picked up some tsw. wheels that had some curb rash and someone gave me a fair price for the slightly used. tis is what the looked like.https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/05/IMAG4342_zps25e131f0-1.jpg (http://s643.photobucket.com/user/erodz/media/63%20belair%20build/IMAG4342_zps25e131f0.jpg.html)

lol. if you would of told me when I started building the car with goals of having 400hp. to the wheels and getting 20mpg. that this was possible 624 rear wheel hp. and 16mpg. pulling a camper trailer and be able to compete in autocross as well as road racing and drag racing.then hook the camper back up and drive home with the air on I would have laughed at you and called you an idiot.I LOVE TURBOS! Just think it is still got more left untapped yet.it is only at 14# of boost looking to bring it up to about 18#after some tuning hurdles hoping to bring it up to about 750rwhp. and still have a reliable ride!

made some more modifications to the brakes on the Belair. bought the ctsv. calipers years ago for the Firebird and decided to make them work on the Belair 14" R1 CONCEPT rotors wow what a big difference! the caliper brackets were not so fun to make though!

pushed like hell early this summer to get the Belair back on the road for the power tour only was able to go for a couple of days after getting the car back together at 3 am. leaving at 6:30 am. with 4 cars going and all my friends backed out last minute but we went anyways. just myself my wife and one son. thank god everything went well Madison to Champagne Il.even got to go auto crossing with only a minor transmission linkage issue. made a couple of laps then drove to Champagne in a absolute down pour rain storm for 4 hrs. good thing I installed wipers on the car right before we left!! The Newport engineering wiper kit worked awesome! here is a little video clip of the autocross in Madison.

had a awesome summer with the Belair putting on about 5,000 miles on it and the only a couple minor issues with it. went on this with some friends and drove over 780 miles round trip and raced at 3 tracks in 3 states and finally got the car in the 11's with 350# in the trunk to get some traction.

looks like my itch to change things up are never ending! after long conversations with Ron Sutton and taking his workshop last year i decided to try to upgrade the front grip and steering on this big boat so as my plan is now cut the shock mounts that i put on last year, and gut everything that will hinder the fitment of some 285/35/20's in the front as well as the rear. going like mad to get it back together for the street machine nationals this weekend!

summer has gone by in a blur racking on some miles on the Belair and while pulling the camper a transmission cooler line let go and smoked my transmission :( so looks like the trans gets pulled again! but on a good note the upgrades on the front shocks and a 285 35 20 tires on the front really helped on the autocross!

well we got the transmission back in and got about 1000 miles on it before our drag weekend with friends from ONE GUYS GARAGE . the whole event is structured like hot rod drag week you have to drive your car the whole trip in my case it was 850 miles round trip raced at 3 different tracks Great lakes dragways in Union grove Wisc.,then Byron Il.dragway, and last Tri states dragway in Earlville Iowa, then road trip home. we made it the whole trip with only a couple hiccups. on e of the idler pulley's bearings locked up and welded to the bolt however we were able to reroute the belt eliminate one idler and hay bale it back together to make a couple of last passes to secure the win for the 11.5 no rollcage class.! that was just a bonus the best part of the trip is the time with my wife and having fun with great friends and meeting new ones! used drag radials this time the 20's did not work so good last year! here are some picts. from the event.
