My 1965 OLD MOBILE 442 build

I am new to the forum, and quite impressed with it. A few guys on the Ultra High Performance forum suggested that I check this forum out, and I am glad they did. I also purchased the 455 from Paul Mckee who had the Cutlass build on this forum. Might I add he has been fantastic to deal with. Below are some pictures of the progress. We started on November 8th 2011. I am slowing down right now due to spending so much so quickly, I am looking for a front disc set up, adjustible upper control arms and pretty much all the front end parts, shocks for front and rear, etc.

I see that you had a leaking back window that rusted out the trunk also. Happens to all of them I swear.

Actually my case was the water, salt etc trapped between the side body mount braces and trunk pan, my trunk was solid as can be except for where the bottom side braces were, we decided to cut it all out and replace it all. On another note I recieved the new Rocker Arms today, they are MUCH better than the PSP Rockers. You have been fantastic to deal with!

Mark I can see now by looking at your core support the "cradle" where the radiator sets in is about 3 inches lower than the 64. I will start calling a few radiator places next week and see if I even have enough air space to cool a 425. I may have to pull my core support and do some fab work on it.

I don't think so... McKee's had one built to fit the stock location that would work well. I have an aluminum stock replacement that seemed to handle things fine. I had a 3 row copper brass replacement that I wished I still had.

What diameter brake booster were you running to clear the valve covers?

Paul you brought a VERY good point he may never thought of yet. Mark will you have any vacuum left anyway with the new cam? Double check but I think you need 12-13 inches. On my 67 with the tall Rocket Racing covers there was barely any room at all. Plus my cam it wouldn't work anyway. But I can say that with disks up front the 67 with manual brakes car stops fine. Mark here is the QA-1's I was talking to you about.

With this 8" there was only about a finger or 2 of clearance... The booster isn't installed in this picture but you can see how little room there is..

I hear ya, with that clearance if you ever have to remove the valve cover for service you have to take the booster and master cylinder off. I chose not to go that route, I guess that's why my left leg is stronger than the right one!!!

I am looking for a reasonable front disc conversion. I cannot use a kit that will space the wheels outwards as clearance is already an issue. looking for a stock spindle set up. I also am running tall valve covers so I will need a 7" or 8" booster. Any ideas?

I am running 18" wheels. I really am not sure on brake size, The car is just going to be a weekend cruiser, I was actually happy with the drums, but would rather have disc up front so I dont need a large rotor.

We have been wide open on this project, Long nights thats forsure. I have a question, I am running SPC adjustible A arms, the front arm is sitting right on the frame, even with the motor in, if I put weight on the frame that do lift off about 3/8-1/2 n inch, is this normal? The ball joint is on top of the a-arm, should I mount it under?

Lonestar is the same way; they touch with the engine out, and are very close even with it in. It has tall spindles though, and the Hotchkis arms made for that setup.

I bet when you add the body, core support, radiator, interior, etc. the suspension settles a bit more. Still seems pretty close though; if you were to hit a big pothole bump or drag the car at all the arms might hit the frame and I would be concerned... Can you run tall upper and lower balljoints like on a G-body? That would make a world of difference.

I am seriously thinking of running fuel injection on the 455, Does anyone know where I can get a EFI conversion fuel tank, maybe something out of stainless to fit in the stock location? I dont want to use my old one anyway and this car never had a return line, I could easily buy a stock one and modify it but I would rather run a nice looking tank

Today I finished a lot of the interior paint work, also finished up the front fender wells, the headers are installed and were a great fit, the magnaflow kit is in, the radiator should be here wednesday, and I am hoping to have an Art Carr 200R4 next week, at that point my rolling chassis will be almost complete.

those are hooker competition, and they fit great, I have a spare set of flowtechs that were only ran for a few months that are laying around here some where

Core support repair and install,
After taking the core support to powder coating I assume when it got sand blasted it unconvered several rust issues, we had to replace the mounting tabs on the drivers side, build a battery box and replace quite a bit of metal in the battery box area.

We worked until almost 11:00 tonight on misc items, I am doing final paint on the new dash insert, got the Carb bolted up, I built a new harness for the starter but I am still confused how to wire a 2 wire starter to my 3 wire setup??????????????? help, We finished the trunk pan install, and actually made some changes to that to avoid taking on water etc as ,to prevent future rust issues. I have a question also about the trunk pan install, would it be best to use body filler on all the seams or seam sealer? My trunk will be all covered with dynomat, then probably carpeted or something like that I dont have a full plan together for the trunk interior but I do want to do it right and make sure there are no issues, I thought about sealing the seams, painting it with POR 15 then with a factory type trunk paint, then build carpeted panels to hide most of the trunk?

I had the same problem when I tried wiring up a mini-starter in my Cutlass. The solution I went with was swapping to an HEI distributor. There is a solution without swapping to HEI, and it involved adding a relay, but I can't remember the details.

I have a pertronix kit in the dist but my factory wiring is still a 3 wire?

Here are some pics as requested of the radiator quality, I also found the best use for those summit hats possible. I also finished the dash panel we made, I wanted an old school look but it to also be modern. I took two different color paints and painted one over top of the other while wet, let them dry and wet sanded, then cleared cut and buffed, the pistures do it no justice but it turned out great, it looks like scratched aluminumstraight ahead and very glossy at an angle

Well, a bit more progress has been made, several frame modifications to clear the headers, leather interior is done, dash pad repaired, transmission in, Art Carr 200R4, exhaust installed etc, we are now stripping the old undercoating and doinf cage nut repairs.

Its an Old Air kit. I was really pleased with it. I called vintage air before talking with Old Air but Vintage really didnt act like they wanted to talk to an Olds guy. Old air was very receptive and we worked out a kit. It works great.

Thank you very much, thats a HUGE compliment on this forum, there are so many incdedible builds on this board. I am happy with it, especially that it was all done at home in the garage.

Funny I got the same treatment from them. I also used OLD Air Products and they were great to work with. Both companys are local to me. Another meth Vintage spreads is you can't use a LS1 compressor with their setup which is total BS.

I've had several private messages regarding parts, how stuff fit, worked etc. I figured I would post it in the thread.
Champion radiator.. The radiator fits great. I called Champion directly before buying a radiator, I had to leave a message, within minutes Rick called me back. We spoke, I told him about my project, he suggested a CC284 radiator, he even worked with me on fan fitting. He made a follow up call the next day, and he assured me the radiator would more than cool my engine. He hooked meup with a Georgia dealer, I was sold, Bought it, and the 16 inch fan. It arrived, it was a good looking piece, almost impossible to polish but nice. The fan wouldnt fit, but I had a buddy that needed a 16 so i re ordered two 12's.
After installing it would not keep it cool unless I was running 20 mph or better ( NOW PAY ATTENTION, THIS WAS DUE TO A LEAN CONDITION) not the radiator, but I did not know it at the time. I called Rick 7 times and sent 4 emails. I have yet to get a response. I built a fan shroud and Changed to a Prosystems carb and it runs TOPS at 200 degree. Point being, they have great service before the sale, after... FORGET IT.

Valve covers, HATE THEM way to tall in the way of everything

Suspension... LOVE IT couldnt ask for better!!! it rides like a new car, handles like mad and hooks up well

Hooker OLDS headers.... I have almost 40 hours in frame work to get them to clear properly

Magnaflow exhaust for olds.... Fits like a glove. looks great,. not so sure about the sound but great product

Pro systems carb ...... PERFECT best investment yet

Its been a while, I had a terrible time getting the engine timed correctly, it broke 3 mini starters trying to crank it at 16 degrees, move it to 20 and it cranks great and runs like crap, pull the timing back to 16 with engine running and it runs like a dream, cut it off try to crank it back and BOOM starter. Its fixed now and has 400 miles on it. I am loving it so far!

I do have a question for you guys. I am running a Champion 3 core alum radiator, aluminum shroud, and dual 12" fans. If you look at the last picture you can see my condensor is blocking air flow to the radiator. I can drive the car in stop and go traffic, or on the highway and it runs at 200-205, if i let it sit and idle, for 10+ minutes to simulate being in congested traffic etc it will climb to 215 possibly more. I am trying to figure out a way to mount a pusher fan in front but I am unsure if mounting one to the condensor will work or should I try to sandwich a fan between the condensor and radiator? I think the problem is when the car isnt moving it isnt getting enough air due to the condensor blocking the majority of the front of the radiator.

I've seen it done a few different ways, this is what I would do...

Weld a tab onto driver side frame rail, use a turnbuckle that you can get from most Menards, Lowe's etc. to connect from the tab to driver engine head bolt. The higher the bolt is on the engine, the more effective the strap will be. (head vs block)

You could even get fancy and use a poly bushing on one end to prevent vibrations.

I have the same valve covers on my SBO, and I can just hardly take the driver side off without having to remove the brake booster. They weren't cheap, but they don't leak like both sets of stamped steel covers I had, so I'm happy! You could sell them pretty easily if you wanted to swap.

I originally had the Magnaflow header back kit on my car as well, with headers. Sounded similar to your and I was "ehhhhhh" on the sound, had a bit of weird rasp to it.

I've heard very good things about Pro Systems, I would have went with one of their custom carbs too but I went to EFI instead.

Mark also did my cam, he hit the nail on the head!

Your car is really coming along nice. 64-65 Post cars are really getting hard to find. Mine turned out to be crusher material when I bought it but here we are today. Hopefully, at least get it in the street in 2014.

Cam has arrived, Roller 242/248 598/602
Heads and intake were ported and flowed, heads are 329 cfm @ .600
Intake has been cerakoted
Changing valve covers
Looking to add either the Mondello or March pulley, bracket and belt set up
Headers being built by ARH
Transmission being changed to a Hughes 480LE with paddle shift
Rear end.......well I am toying with ideas, either which way It will be narrowed around 2-3 inches
Hoping to add Rushforth wheels soon
going with Ram Air restorations oval X-pipe and spintech's
bought a Flowkooler water pump and good elec fans to help with cooling
repainting under the hood

" I am running a Champion 3 core alum radiator" I have no experience with this personally, but I was watching a NASCAR tech show one time [I forget the name] and they were talking about rads. They said they run 2 core on slower tracks and 3 core only on big speed tracks. The reasoning was, a 3 core would run too hot when going slow because not enough air goes through it. Something to look into anyways.

That motor had a small torque chain on it when it was in our Cutlass. We drilled and tapped the frame and had a 3 or 4 link chain going from below the motor mount to one of the holes in the block. I don't think I have Pix of it installed though.

Hoping to have the engine assembled again in the next few weeks then off to the dyno to break it in, time it and tune it! Its a tad bit different that it was!
