Otherwise I might be dim enough to put a bid in on this. That's more than the cost for a nice set of hotchkis tie rods that eliminate the crappy balljoints.

$512 was the winning bid, oh my. I'm glad I can let go of the past. It's getting too expensive to try and keep it around.

DartorDemon – WOW! That is expensive for some old original parts, but purists think differently. :)

The funniest thing is when a purist sees my car. I had a guy with a 71 conv. Cuda flip out on me (literally) when he read the fender tag and it said my car was a big block/4 speed car and I have a small block and massaged the tunnel for the TKO. He was livid as I was laughing in his face.
I've heard the worst was the Corvette and GTO purists though.

years ago there was someone who found a case of the old embossed bodied oil filters that GM used in the 60's. They went for hundreds of dollars each. thats a lot of money for a filter with dry rotted paper that can't filter anything.

I don't know man, mopar purists get a little insane. I've seen on a nameless forum people going off about how bad it is to do a 5.9 magnum swap...which is literally an simple/standard small block mopar with better heads and pistons than the crap from the 70s. It'd be like someone flipping out here for putting a vortec 350 into their car.

I think the Mopar guys win in the purist catagory! I had a friend into Mopars for a while and went to a few all Mopar events and those guys are nuts! I thought some of them were going to cry when they saw something that wasnt original in a car!

lol
Especially if it had 40yr old tie rods. lol
I remember back as a kid in the '70's when the lower balljoint broke on mom's 40K mile '72 coronet custom and the front end completely collapsed onto the road.
I wonder how much those NOS Ball joints are going for on E-bay?

I went to go purchase a 1970 superbee 440 6 pack car. The guy found out my demon didn't have the orginal slant six and refused to sell it to me after that.

That takes the cake but....
I had a guy that wouldn't sell me a 71-74 center console at a swap meet because mine's a 70. The difference is there is little 2" X 1" chrome ash tray at the rear for the backseat passengers. The 70 console had a little slot in that location for the male seat belt ends to click into. These seat belt holders were hard to get to and never used because of the odd location for them hence the change to an ash tray for the ensuing years of the 'Cuda. I wanted the little ash try console because it looks better and is more functional. He wouldn't sell it to me.

GTO people are bad. Spend a few hours on the performance years forums to get some lolz. Date matched carbs will go for 1500 all day long too. God forbid if you put an endura bumper on a non factory endurance car.

Honestly guys... I think the classic Volvo guys are the worst ever, and I have plenty of document hate emails to back it up.. It got bad when I started doing my Project Changling and Volvo X build, but as soon as I announced I was releasing products like suspension kits, rear ends, radiators, ect, ect, the hate mail and internet bashing really got horrible.. LOL But the worst thing about them versus the Mopar and other purist is, they are not willing to step up and pay the cost.. ha ha

Here is a small taste of what I am dealing with... Please keep in mind, he is referencing 90 horsepower cars here.
Quote>>>>>
It's not his particular products that bug me, it's the mindset. Increasingly we see cars dropped so low they're riding on their bump stops, steering boxes adjusted way over tight because no one bothers to read the service manual, tappets tightened until it sounds like a modern overhead cam engine and lashed up fuel injection systems because “SUs don’t work”. And then, when it breaks because some incompetent masquerading as a mechanic has been working on it, everyone concludes it must need upgrading because clearly the technology was crap. Actually it needs repairing properly, and it needs someone to think for a few seconds about how it’s actually supposed to work. In reality a 120 on properly setup factory suspension will outstrip the driving ability of the vast majority of their owners.
I better go stick some melamine onto my 18th century oak dining table; the hot pans are burning it. They used to make real junk in those days.

I'd just like to say that I belong to a bunch of Mopar forums and have attended many Mopar events throughout the years, including the Carlisle All Chrysler Nationals for the last 6 years.
I have certainly seen people who are purists, but usually these are the people doing concours-type-restos and they have their place.
Rarely do I see anyone who tweaks out knowing that I swapped bucket seats into my 74 Dart that originally had a bench, etc.
The only time I've ever seen anyone all ruffled up is when someone makes significant changes to a truly rare car, you know, some 1 of 1 deal, or something that was low production numbers. I don't blame anyone for that, though I still maintain that if someone owns a car, its theirs to do what they want with it.
Nothing, and I mean nothing compares to what I've seen from Corvette owners, though:
When I was about 10 years old my grandfather bought a 1971 Corvette Stingray with the T-Tops. It was all original and absolutely beautiful, having only had the motor refreshed in its life, with its original red paint in truly excellent condition. He joined two local Corvette clubs and went to nearly every Vette show that he could go to.
The year after he bought it, over the winter, he decided he wanted to add a different set of wheels to it, but keep the original wheels, and to add a couple of Corvette inspired elements in the interior, some custom embroidered floormats and such. He put the wheels on and took it to its first show of the new season, bringing me along (I was roughly 11 or 12).
We pulled in, and his Corvette club "friends" immediately came over to the car, before we were even out of it.
By the time my grandfather was up and out of the car, one guy had his finger practically in the middle of my grandfather's chest, and was accusing my grandfather of ruining the car's Corvette heritage, and calling the things my grandfather had done to the car, "downright distasteful." My grandfather had no response except to get back in the car and drive home. He took the car to a lot of other Corvette events during that summer, and got the same response from others within the Corvette clubs.
At the end of the summer, he put the car up for sale, growing tired of these "Corvette enthusiasts" constantly maligning him, and seeking a car to which he could truly do what he wanted.
Nothing I have ever seen, from any vehicular enthusiast/owner/fan of any company or vehicle, compares to the angry and ignorant rantings of those Corvette owners, and I've dealt with a LOT of different Mopar enthusiasts throughout the years, some who would have been stupid enough to buy these tie-rods, and most who wouldn't.

Sorry to have to say it, but Corvette guys leave everyone else for dead.....a lot of them (not all, by any means) aren't car guys, they're "Corvette guys"....if you don't own a Vette, they don't even speak to you at a car show or a cruise. Don't get me wrong, I really like Corvettes, but some of the owners.......wow!

I am currently building a MOPAR 68 Charger, I am doing a pro-touring/Street car, I have built Mustangs, Camaros, Corvettes....but this MOPAR project is a whole new challange, I love the lines of the Charger, but don't think I will ever do another one as a driver, some of the parts are just OUT OF THE WORLD in price..i.e. rear taillight housings=$1000++ for the 68 and the list goes on, most guys never will know this, and when they look at buying a 68 Camaro or a 68 Mustang, or a 68 Charger, the first two would cost half to build, when it comes to the details, on that note.. I CAN'T WAIT FOR IT TO BE FINISHED and drive the hell out of it..

You haven't met some of the Mopar guys I used to know out in CA, then...
Back in the late 80s, I had a 68 Barracuda 340S. All original. It was my daily, and I got tired of having to run premium; so I built a lower compression 381 (early 360 bored .070 with late 340 pistons), and swapped the top end from the 340 on to it. I was at a car show and some guy looked at the engine and started YELLING "This f**kin thing's got a 360 in it!"... A crowd gathered, and THEN they noticed I had swapped in a Slap-Stik shifter. I heard everything but "GET A ROPE!". Last Mopar show I ever went to...

Well, I was born in the late 80s, and I think that attitude amongst Mopar guys has changed, because I've been around enough in the last 10 years to know how the ones around me (at least on the East Coast) act.
Like I said, I'm sticking to my Vette owners theory. Like LeighP said, most of them just aren't car guys, they're "Vette" guys.

While i agree to the general premise, i dont think vette guys are worse than mopar people. A good friend of mine is technically a "vette guy" and i can't count the number of times we've had arguments about the vettes, but in the end they remained friendly arguments...not really the case with mopar people. Most forums you cant even have a civil discussion of a non-mopar without it a ton of "its still an XYZ and not a mopar".
Then again, we could get into a debate as to whether we can discuss the validity of his "vette guy status". He's not over 40, likes to race his vette, and as far as i'm aware, doesnt waste time at the boring car shows where you just sit and look at cars.

I've heard the worst was the Corvette and GTO purists though.I'm sure every mark has their own breed of purists.
I haven't had much experience with the vette guys, but then again I don't really go to car shows all that often. The people I get drawn to at swap meets are generally the ones who have their own franken-cars with them too.

Gentleman those are the rarest of all pieces to "properly" restore the steering on their /6 grandma green 1975 Dodge Dart with the rich floral cloth deluxe mustard yellow interior. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Best of all the car is probably on 22's!

Nobody is worse than the corvette guys......but in their defense at least they have corvettes.
I was at the big show in wildwood NJ one year with my 71 challenger. it was judged by more mopar people in one day than in the thrirty years ive owned it.
