Nice.....

How would a vintage spec car stack up against say Red Devil?

It's a historic racing series so there are a lot of rules and restrictions but these cars are well developed and as you can see they like to drive them. I think a full tilt PT car on slicks would give them a run for their money though

I dont know specifically but by the looks of it you'll probably find they're running a bias ply slick, they're not as quick or as durable as a radial but you can hang them out MUCH further and bring them back.....you ever watch any old 80s Nascar footage?....those guys were hung right out all over the track....bias ply tires.....they switched to the more consistent/durable radials and it was a complete new learning experience for the drivers.....been a Cup fan since 1969 and IMO the series lost something when they switched to the radials....just like this stuff with the bias's you could plainly SEE those guys driving the h ell out of those cars!

Great footage!.....I love that old school hung out racing and my track car will be running bias ply slicks.

The 4 door was a ford, the track they are racing on is called Bathurst in New south wales.
In october they have a v8 production car race over 1000 kms. It is the most prestigous race you can win here.
The elevation in the track has to be seen to be believed, this race was probably on the under card of the main race.

The green car is a 1971 Ford Falcon GTHO 351 - worlds fastest production 4 door sedan in 1971. Off the showroom floor they would run off the end of a 140mph speedometer (no fooling - they were that fast).

I figure his tyres went off in the middle of that race as he suddenly lost so much track speed and his car was moving around a lot.

Mt Panorama (the track) at Bathurst is unbelievable.....the drop off the mountain to the long straight (Conrod Straight) is way steeper than it looks on the videos....when you drive it, you can't believe people come down that hill on full throttle. When they are not racing on it, the Mt Panorama track is a public road, anyone can drive on it.

Would be cool to see something like that here in the states, is there?

Another vid- in car. There are a few of these on youtube. Top speed 268 kph = 166 mph. That's groovin'! Wonder how high they rap those motors up to? Are these like the old Trans Am series where they're limited to 5 liters or something?

Camaro gets tagged on the take off...

Makes me want to build a real race car. I really don't think anybody in the PT scene is keeping up with these guys. Having the equipment is one thing, the experience is another, and most importantly, the stones to total it.

The green Ford was to lightly sprung. Awesome stuff!

Good point you make, after watching the video I thought those guys are bada$$ and there is no way I could do that lap after lap.I am relieved to hear you say that the PT guys are not up to this caliber,so maybe I am not wasting my time building a new track car. Greg

Your not wasting your time, build the car and go as fast as you feel comfortable one step, one outing at a time....you gonna' hop in your just built car and run with those guys without years of previous experience?.....not likely!....on the other hand if you are not content with running at a pace that suits you and your budget and you MUST run up front I 100% guarantee you those guys get out of bed and put their socks on one at a time just like you and me....it can be done.

The "Touring Car Masters" series is about as awesome as it gets, running old cars like they were run back in the day. If I remember correctly, the only items that are updated are the tires (spec Hoosier) and the cage/interior.

There are a couple Youtube channels that post the televised versions of each race.

you can thank my late father-in-law for being one of the driving forces ( engineering-wise) for that car. the falcon is the reason that my wife grew up in Australia. Ford shipped the whole family there so he could work on the platform. They only came back for a few years (73-74) , had my wife, then went back in 75, then stayed till 86/87 when they brought him back to the states and into the heavy truck division.

makes me proud!

My next build will be a falcon track monster. woot!

that would be almost correct but the real reason is they are all travelling at haul ass (just short of Ludacris) that there are no serious crashes also take into account that down in that part of the world spins differently than us in the states, metal tends to stay put when crashed together.

I've been to a couple of the vintage weekends at Road America and those are awesome events. Most of the drivers are pretty sane, but there are a few that really hang it out and it is a blast to watch. Some of those guys are running really wicked sounding big blocks making in excess of 700 HP and they do run bias ply tires. Long black tracks out of every corner!

They have dry sump oil systems , radial tires , upgraded disc brakes ( Things to make them safer and more reliable for race duty )

I remember seeing a video where a vintage Trans Am Series Mustang Boss 302 ( Bud Moore / Parnelli Jones car ) was faster than a bunch of PT cars on a track .
Maybe it was Optima Ultimate Streetcar invitational in 2009 ??

I would say to that comment I just saw 3 trans am cars trade paint and then some at Laguna a few months ago... far from parading.

Yep, it was 2009, and it was damn impressive. That was the Pace Car for the event and only 3 cars beat it by the end of the day - 2 full blown PT 69 Camaros and the original Cobra.

Even if they are dedicated race cars and do tag each other on occasion I'd rather see that than an old muscle car rotting away in somebody's side yard and when you ask about it some half toothless 50 year old guy in dirty pants and a wife beater shirt says "no it's not for sale, I'm gonna restore it someday..."
