View Full Version : Looks like I'm going to be forced to insure through State Farm
As a 23 year old, none of the classic insurers were interested at all... I gotta say I'm pretty nervous about using State Farm. Can any of you guys ease this anxiety at all? Would it maybe be better to have my dad insure it through Hagerty's and then I just pay him?

State Farm has the type of policy you're looking for (Collector Car with Agreed Value) and go with them on your own.

I have everything I own through SF. They have treated me more than fairly when I had to call upon them. I would not change to another insurance company ever.
Hope this eases your stress a little.
Thanks for your comments guys. My local State Farm agent says that with their CC Agreed Value they'd want me under 1,000 miles per year... I need more than that but probably not more than 2,000. They don't seem to want to budge

My experience with State Farm's CC Agreed Value is that they want you under 1,000 mile per year. On the two we've had insured for several years, there wasn't even a place to list an odometer reading. We got our 92 put on in Sept and the form finally had a spot to put mileage on it. They were pretty clear they wouldn't cover damage from a racing event (not really a surprise), and you need to keep it garaged.
They have never asked for a "follow up" odometer reading on any of the cars.
We have State Farm insure everything else we own (right down to the saddles for my horse) never had a problem with them, even when making a claim.
Good Luck.

State Farm has always been good to me. My agent is cool with the racing I do (autox now, used to drag race many a moon ago). He just said that they didn't cover the vehicle during the event but did going to and leaving the event. Never gave me a hard time on any of it.
Now with my Dads 53 Mercury, he went with Hagartys as it was $190/yr vs $500-600 yr with State Farm and Hagartys coverage was better.

I've had insurance for 10+ years with a limited miles policy. Not once have they ever followed up. Also my mile indicator doesnt even work on both of my camaro's. SO you may not even have to worry about the 1,000 miles per year limit.

You guys can bet that they will be interested in a follow up mileage reading should you ever file a claim.

My 2001 Camaro SS is insured through SF with a limited mileage policy. I get forms at least once a year requesting the current mileage on the car. This is with a 7500 mile a year policy. The 1000 mile a year policy was explained to me as being for driving a classic car to and from shows and parades. I would not drive the car to church on Sunday morning if I had that policy.

I've had 2 cars on CC policies with SF for 4 years and never once have they asked for a mileage reading. On these 2 they didn't even ask for a reading or have a spot on the application for it when the policy was started. However, I haven't had any claims on them except for a windshield replacement either so they haven't had a reason to ask about mileage. The 3rd car on a CC policy with them has only been on it for about 5 months and was the first one where they even asked for the current mileage as part of the application. I don't currently drive any of these cars much so the 1000 mile limit isn't that big of an issue.
My experience with Haggerty and Grundy was far from satisfactory though with both of them declining to insure any of the vehicles with the reasons ranging from 1) too many vehicles owned (13 including trailers) to 2) too many claims, all for glass repair which is a regular thing living in the desert and 3) admitting that I would use it for events that included autox and drag racing vs the car being a pure show car that never moved except to and from the parking spot at the show.
So far State Farm has been great with the coverage on everything and I'm hoping I never have to make a claim on the vehicles on the collector car side except for glass repair. All of the daily drivers have also been on State Farm coverage for almost 30 years and never once have I had an issue with my insurance coverage not delivering exactly as promised by the agent.

And also the location of where the loss occurred. There are stipulations such as pleasure/show use only, no commute or work driving, no use as a "daily driver," and a maximum amount of use miles per year. If you're involved in an accident and it happened during a non-pleasure/cruise/show day, plan on it being a claims coverage question. This is, of course, for the Agreed Value Collector Car insurance and not for the standard Actual Cash Value policies.

did you give Morgan a call to be sure about which policies you can / can't get?

I was not aware that State Farm is now doing Agreed Value policies for Classic Cars. In the past it was always Stated Value, at least that is all they had when I was looking for insurance a few years ago.

Maybe you should have asked for insurance on furniture that you keep in the garage?:poke: :smoke:

I've found State Farm would only insure my classic vehicles if I gave them ALL of my daily drivers as well.

Mary, it's Ace,
Quick question, what is "pleasure" considered?? Obviously if you used it for work transportation I can see that being a no no, but
what if you're using it say.....all weekend to drive and enjoy ....hence "pleasure" ??? Or is there a more precise definition of "Pleasure"
we all need to be aware of ?? Like only 2 hours in a single day per month for a car show ......kinda thing...??
IN other words, my definition of "Pleasure" might not be the same as the Ins co's.

Haha.... I had some garage furniture for many, many years... Just waiting for the money to get it back on the streets. No garage furniture anymore...... Back on the streets again...Oh and i have had farmer's for years..Same type of policy...agreed value, limited miles, pleasure driving because i have two other regular cars insured too..Oh and never lie and get on someone else's policy...You may think you are covered, but they may deny it...you pay more being young, but that is what we all did...Good luck

I have been honest with my agent...They know that my Z/28 is taken out for beatings, but I am not covered at a race track..

I too have State Farm and never been asked to verify or update mileage.I doubt anyone can insure your vehicle while particpating at a speed or autox event, but you have coverage traveling to and from. Ask plenty of questions from your agent to get the proper coverage. Mine was extremely helpful as he is also a car guy. I can't say how they are upon submitting a claim,as I never had to.

Ace ... just found your post and "pleasure use" is for car shows, travel on weekends, and just about anything other than for work or shopping. Obviously competition and timed-speed events are excluded for coverage but if the car is in the paddock area while you're watching this type of event and is hit or rolls into something else causing damage, you should be covered. Driving the car to a buddy's to visit would be considered Pleasure Use. If you stopped at a grocery store to pick up milk afterwards ... yes, probably still covered in the event of a claims loss but you'd be having to explain WHY you stopped and why driving that car at the time. Basically, the carrier that insures you for Agreed Value wants to make sure you're doing your best to take care of and protect your car while it's insured with them. Using it for basic transportation needs, i. e., shopping and/or work, increases the exposure ...
Be prepared to list what type of use the covered car was doing when it was involved in the claims loss as it's a question that will usually be asked.
And if you have a specific event you want to attend like Power Tour that could exceed your yearly mileage limit, ask beforehand. Chances are you'll still be covered if the unfortunate should occur as it falls under the "Pleasure" definition of use. Living in Cali, I'd be exceeding that 5K yearly limit just getting to and from ... and I did ask this question to be told it was okay. Each carrier may be different, though.
And ask if you have unique circumstances where the covered car might be driven. Definitely better to ask beforehand and be told "no" rather than be shut down from a CCQ (claims coverage question).

I am insured with Hagerty for an agreed value and 12k miles a year. I had to be pushy and demand the extra mileage deal. I flat told them my car was built to attend national car events like the power tour and that I also live in a rural area and I have to drive 60 miles just to attend a local show which is all true and that 3k miles or even 6k miles a year wasn't going to cut it for me. They agreed but of course I have to pay extra for the additional mileage. As stated I am not covered while racing etc... at the events.
